Naina realized the date only because she found an old envelope while cleaning a drawer. Inside were several medical papers, a prescription, and a folded sheet containing notes from the first days after his admission. She read only enough to recognize the handwriting before folding it again.

Arvind saw the papers in her hand.

“You don't have to read those,” he said.

“I know.”

She looked at him. “Do you want to?”

He considered it.

“No.”

She put them away.

That was another change between them. Once, either one of them might have made the decision alone about what the other should know. Now even painful information belonged to a shared conversation.

Later that afternoon, they went to the clinic for another scheduled review. The waiting room looked almost exactly as it always had: plastic chairs, muted television, patients holding folders, relatives whispering into phones. Naina remembered the first time she had sat there, terrified of a result she had not yet received.

Arvind sat beside her.

“You're remembering,” he said.

“Yes.”

“Bad?”

“Not entirely.”

He raised an eyebrow.

“I remember being terrified,” she said. “But I also remember the moment I learned I was safe.”

He nodded.

“I didn't know then that you were sitting somewhere worrying about me.”

“I was.”

“I wish I had known.”

“So do I.”

The doctor called them inside.

The reports were better than they had once been, though not perfect. The treatment was continuing to stabilize Arvind's condition. The doctor explained that improvement did not erase the underlying damage, and that care had to remain consistent.

Arvind listened carefully and asked questions.

Naina listened too.

When they left the room, neither spoke immediately.

Finally, Naina said, “Better.”

“Better,” he agreed.

“Not perfect.”

“No.”

She smiled faintly. “We've become very good at that word.”

“Which one?”

“Better.”

He laughed.

Outside, the sky had turned dark. Rain began before they reached the road. They stopped beneath a shop awning, watching water sweep across the pavement.

Naina suddenly remembered another rain, another night, another version of herself who had believed one terrible choice could remain hidden forever.

She closed her eyes.

Arvind noticed.

“What is it?”

“The rain.”

He waited.

“I used to hate it.”

“Because of the lodge?”

She nodded.

“I thought whenever it rained, I'd always remember that night.”

“And now?”

She opened her eyes.

“Now I remember this.”

She looked at him.

“The clinic. You beside me. The rain. Your hand.”

Arvind glanced down at their joined hands.

“Good,” he said.

They waited until the rain softened.

Then they walked home through the wet streets.

There was no dramatic conversation that evening. They ate dinner. Arvind complained that the vegetables were overcooked. Naina told him he had become impossible. He said she had married him willingly. She reminded him that he had been much younger and better behaved.

After dinner, they went to the balcony.

The jasmine had grown thick enough that its branches leaned against the railing. Several flowers were open, and their fragrance drifted into the room.

Arvind touched one carefully.

“Do you remember the first plant?”

“Yes.”

“The one Priya brought?”

“Yes.”

“It nearly died.”

Naina laughed. “Because you forgot to water it.”

“I did not.”

“You did.”

“I was ill.”

“That was later.”

He looked offended. “You're rewriting history.”

She smiled. “I've learned from experience.”

They both laughed.

Then the laughter faded naturally.

Naina said, “If we had another life, would you do anything differently?”

Arvind thought for a long time.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“I would talk sooner.”

She nodded.

“Would you?”

“Yes.”

“About the loneliness?”

“About everything.”

He looked at her. “And the affair?”

She did not look away.

“I would make sure it never happened.”

“That isn't what I meant.”

“I know.”

He took her hand.

“I don't want you to spend the rest of our lives answering the same question.”

“Which question?”

“Whether you are still that woman.”

Naina's eyes filled.

“You aren't.”

She squeezed his hand.

“And I'm not the man who spent eighteen years pretending he didn't want his wife beside him.”

She whispered, “I know.”

They stayed outside until the air became cool.

That night, Naina opened the wedding album again. She found the old railway-station photograph with the words on the back: “First year. Still learning.”

She carried it into the bedroom.

Arvind looked at the photograph and smiled.

“We really were young.”

“We thought we knew everything.”

“We knew nothing.”

She sat beside him.

“Maybe that's what we should have remembered.”

“What?”

“That marriage is something you keep learning.”

Arvind nodded.

They placed the photograph on the bedside table.

Neither spoke about the old white pillow. They didn't need to. Its absence had become part of the room.

Outside, rain began again.

Naina listened.

There was a time when rain had sounded like accusation.

Tonight it sounded like weather.

Arvind turned toward her.

“You're quiet.”

“I'm listening.”

“To what?”

“The rain.”

He smiled.

Then he reached for her.

Naina moved closer.

Their foreheads touched.

There was no apology in that moment. No punishment. No attempt to erase what had happened. Only two people who knew exactly what they had lost and had finally stopped pretending that knowing loss meant they could not still choose love.

The next morning, Arvind woke before her.

He went to the balcony and watered the jasmine.

When Naina joined him, he handed her the small watering can.

“You do it.”

She took it.

For a while, they stood together among the flowers.

The old pillow had become soil.

The soil had become a plant.

The plant had become flowers.

Neither of them said what that meant.

They simply stood there.

Click Here to continue read next: PART16: Without the Wall

The anniversary of Arvind's return home from the hospital arrived without ceremony.
