Naina sometimes woke from dreams that returned her to the night she had confessed. Arvind sometimes became quiet when fatigue settled heavily over him. There were mornings when a medical reminder on his phone brought the old fear rushing back, and evenings when Naina watched him take his medication and imagined every possible future except the one she wanted. Healing had not made them fearless. It had simply made fear something they could speak about.

Arvind kept every appointment. Naina stopped pretending she was not worried and started asking direct questions. If he felt tired, he said so. If she was frightened, she said so. Sometimes the answers were inconvenient. Sometimes they were repetitive. But repetition was better than the old silence. Their new marriage was built less on certainty than on information shared before it became dangerous.

One Sunday morning, Arvind found Naina rearranging the kitchen shelves.

“Why?” he asked.

“Because everything is in the wrong place.”

“It has been in the same place for fifteen years.”

“Exactly. Fifteen years wrong.”

He stood in the doorway watching her move jars from one shelf to another. “Should I call the police?”

“Call whoever you want. I'm still moving them.”

He laughed and walked away.

A few minutes later he returned with two cups of tea.

“You forgot this,” he said.

“I didn't forget. I was going to make it later.”

“You always say that.”

She took the cup. “And you always interfere.”

“I've decided interference is part of marriage.”

She looked at him over the rim. “You took eighteen years to discover that?”

“I'm a slow learner.”

She smiled. “Apparently.”

These small moments became their evidence. Not proof that the past had vanished, because it had not. Proof that something new was being built over the ruins.

Priya visited often. She never asked for explanations, but she noticed changes. One afternoon, while folding laundry, she looked toward the bedroom and saw the bed from the hallway.

“The pillow is gone,” she said.

Naina froze for half a second.

“Yes.”

Priya nodded as though the answer was enough. “Good.”

Naina looked at her daughter. “Why good?”

“Because it always looked strange.”

Naina laughed softly. “You noticed?”

“Of course I noticed. We all noticed.”

The answer hurt more than accusation would have. Not because Priya knew the truth, but because she had seen the symbol without knowing its meaning. Naina suddenly understood that children often live inside the atmosphere created by adults. They do not need the story to feel its temperature.

That evening, she told Arvind what Priya had said.

He sat quietly for a moment. “I suppose I thought the pillow was between you and me.”

“It was.”

“I didn't realize it was between us and them too.”

Naina rested her head against his shoulder.

“We can't change that.”

“No.”

“But we can stop creating new walls.”

Arvind turned his hand upward, and she placed hers inside it.

At the next clinic appointment, the doctor reviewed his reports carefully. Some numbers had improved. Others still required attention. There was no promise that the damaged areas would simply return to normal. The treatment was helping, but the past had left marks that could not be negotiated away.

“Continue exactly as you're doing,” the doctor said. “Medication, monitoring, rest. Don't become careless just because the reports are better.”

Arvind nodded.

Outside the clinic, Naina asked, “Are you disappointed?”

“No.”

“You looked serious.”

“I was listening.”

“You're allowed to be frightened.”

“I know.”

“And?”

“And I am.”

She slipped her hand into his.

Rain had started while they were inside. They stood beneath the awning watching people hurry along the pavement. Years earlier, rain had carried Naina back to the lodge, to the decision she wished she could erase. Now rain was becoming something else. Not a cure for the memory, but a reminder that the same weather could belong to different moments.

“Do you remember that first clinic day?” she asked.

“Every detail.”

“I remember being afraid.”

“So was I.”

“I thought I was the only one.”

“So did I.”

She looked at him. “We were both very good at being alone.”

Arvind smiled sadly. “Yes.”

They walked home slowly.

On the way, they stopped at a small flower seller. Naina noticed jasmine arranged in a metal bucket.

“We already have enough,” Arvind said.

“One can never have enough jasmine.”

“That sounds suspiciously like something someone says before buying more.”

She bought it anyway.

At home, they placed the flowers in water and sat on the balcony. The city lights came on one by one. Somewhere below, a pressure cooker whistled. A motorcycle started. A child shouted for his mother. Ordinary life surrounded them.

Naina suddenly said, “I used to think our story ended eighteen years ago.”

Arvind looked at her.

“When I hurt you, I thought that was the moment everything important was decided. Then when you became distant, I thought the distance was permanent.”

“I thought so too.”

“But it wasn't.”

“No.”

“Maybe we kept living because we had children. Then because of duty. Then because we were afraid to start over.”

Arvind looked at the jasmine flowers on the table. “And somewhere along the way, we started choosing each other again.”

Naina nodded.

“I don't want to call that a miracle,” he said.

“Why?”

“Because miracles sound like things that happen without effort.”

She smiled.

“This took effort.”

“More than either of us expected.”

They laughed.

That night, Arvind fell asleep quickly. Naina remained awake, watching him. She thought about the man who had once signed a declaration promising never to risk touching his wife again. He had done it because he believed love meant protecting her even if protection required disappearing from her life. She could finally see the tragedy in that decision without pretending it had been entirely noble or entirely wrong.

He had protected her body while leaving her heart to invent explanations.

She had protected her pride while leaving his heart to bleed privately.

Neither had known how to ask for what they needed.

Naina turned toward him.

“Arvind?”

He stirred. “Hmm?”

“Are you awake?”

“Not anymore.”

She laughed quietly.

His hand found hers beneath the sheet.

She closed her eyes.

A year was approaching since the worst days at the hospital. They had not marked the date. Neither wanted an anniversary of illness. But Naina knew what the passing months meant. Arvind was still here. Still taking his medicine. Still complaining about sugar. Still arguing about television. Still watering jasmine. Still sleeping beside her.

The future remained uncertain.

For once, uncertainty did not feel like a reason to hide.

Click Here to continue read next: PART15: The Rain We Could Finally Hear

The months that followed were not perfect.
