Then I saw Arvind beside me. He was still asleep, one hand resting on the sheet between us. The room was pale with early light. Outside, a milkman shouted to someone downstairs, and a scooter coughed twice before starting. Everything was ordinary. Yet I could not stop looking at his hand.

I had spent eighteen years learning not to reach for it.

Now I was learning that reaching was no longer forbidden.

Arvind opened his eyes.

“You're staring again.”

I smiled.

“You noticed.”

“I notice everything.”

The words were simple, but they carried years inside them. I looked toward the window because I did not trust my face.

He sat up slowly.

“Are you sorry?”

I turned.

The question was not angry.

That made it harder.

“About what?”

He gave me a tired look.

“You know.”

I swallowed.

“Every day.”

He nodded.

“I don't want you to be sorry every day.”

I stared at him.

“Then what do you want?”

He thought for a while.

“I want you to remember without living there.”

My eyes filled.

“I don't know if I can.”

“You can.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I did.”

The answer stayed with me all morning.

I had assumed Arvind carried the past because he could not forgive me.

I was beginning to understand that he had carried it because forgiveness did not erase memory.

He had learned to remember without reopening the wound every morning.

I had not.

I still woke sometimes with the old lodge in my mind.

Rain.

A cheap room.

Sameer.

My own foolish certainty that what I wanted in that moment mattered more than what I had promised.

I hated remembering.

But perhaps remembering was not the punishment.

Perhaps the punishment was refusing to learn from it.

At breakfast, Arvind complained that the tea was too sweet.

“You used to like it.”

“I was younger.”

“You are still the same person.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“I am not.”

I knew what he meant.

Neither of us was.

The people who married had believed love would protect them from ordinary weakness.

The people who had survived eighteen years knew better.

Love did not prevent loneliness.

Marriage did not prevent temptation.

Loyalty did not happen automatically.

It had to be practiced.

So did honesty.

So did forgiveness.

That afternoon, Priya called.

“Mom, are you free?”

“Yes.”

“Can I come over?”

“Of course.”

She arrived an hour later carrying fruit and a packet of medicines for her father.

Arvind was asleep in the living room.

She looked at him for a long moment.

“He looks better.”

“He is.”

She sat beside me.

Then she asked, “Are you happy?”

I smiled.

“I think so.”

“You think so?”

“I am learning.”

She looked toward her father.

“Dad told me something.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“He said he doesn't want us worrying about him every minute.”

I laughed softly.

“That sounds like him.”

Priya smiled.

Then her expression became serious.

“Mom, were you two always this distant?”

I looked at her.

The question I had feared had finally arrived.

I could have lied.

It would have been easy.

I could have blamed his illness.

Work.

Money.

Personality.

Anything.

Instead, I said, “No.”

She waited.

“We went through something very difficult.”

“Did you hurt each other?”

The question pierced me.

“Yes.”

She looked down.

“Both of you?”

“Yes.”

She nodded slowly.

She did not ask for details.

I was grateful.

Some truths have a proper time.

She reached for my hand.

“Whatever happened, I'm glad you're together now.”

I squeezed her fingers.

“So am I.”

When she left, I sat beside Arvind.

He opened his eyes.

“She asked.”

“I know.”

“What did you tell her?”

“The truth.”

He looked worried.

“What truth?”

“That we hurt each other.”

He nodded.

“Good.”

“Were you listening?”

“I was took our usual place on the balcony.

The jasmine had become thick with leaves.

Several flowers were open.

Arvind watered it carefully.

“You're going to
