Then I heard him breathe on the other end of the line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSay that again,\u201d I demanded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said Thomas is waiting for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel grabbed my wrist. Her face had gone pale.<\/p>\n<p>Nolan continued before I could speak. \u201cNot the five families. Not Peter Vale. Not anyone you\u2019ve been chasing through those archives. Thomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas has been dead for eleven years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen stop playing games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not playing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was something in Nolan\u2019s voice I had never heard before. Fear, certainly. But underneath it was something worse: recognition. He sounded like a man who had finally understood that the people controlling him were not the people he had always believed were controlling him.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Martin. He had heard Nolan through the speaker. His expression changed immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk him where,\u201d Martin whispered.<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>Nolan hesitated. \u201cThe island.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe island owned by the fifth family?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>Nolan said, \u201cThey think they own it. They don&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin stepped closer. \u201cWho does?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nolan swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>I felt the room tilt beneath my feet.<\/p>\n<p>For eleven years I had lived with the certainty that Thomas died in a hospital bed after a long illness. I had held his hand. I had listened to the doctors explain what his body was doing. I had watched his breathing become shallow. I had kissed his forehead and told him I loved him.<\/p>\n<p>And now a frightened man was telling me that my dead husband owned an island the most powerful families in the country believed belonged to them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Nolan?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not telling you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNolan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to listen to me, Elaine. If you go there alone, they\u2019ll use you. If you bring the wrong people, they\u2019ll kill Rachel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stepped toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNolan, why are you helping us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Nolan answered, \u201cBecause I finally saw what I helped build.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought I was moving money. I thought I was buying time. I told myself everyone in that world was corrupt anyway. Then I saw the files on your mother. I saw what they had done to your father. I saw the photographs of Elaine. You chained her in a garage. You impersonated her. You moved millions through shell companies. And now you&#39;re pretending you&#39;re protecting us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen give me one reason to believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nolan breathed heavily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I\u2019m already there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call ended.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Martin was the first to speak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe went ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew he might.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suspected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou suspected?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin looked exhausted. \u201cThomas contacted Nolan years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My anger sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot directly. Through a chain of intermediaries. Thomas knew Nolan was being used. He wanted someone inside the financial system who could eventually move information without attracting attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel shook her head. \u201cMy husband?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour husband was weak,\u201d Martin said. \u201cThomas knew that. Weak men can still be useful when they\u2019re frightened enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel flinched.<\/p>\n<p>I put a hand on her shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Martin continued. \u201cThomas wasn&#39;t trying to save Nolan.
