Yet his eyes were the same\u2014restless, watchful, always measuring the room before settling on a person.<\/p>\n<p>Harold Benson raised his gun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re supposed to be dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin glanced at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo are you, apparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Benson&#39;s finger tightened around the trigger.<\/p>\n<p>The second detective on the floor dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who killed him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt the blood drain from my face.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot the way you think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Benson&#39;s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said Thomas was compromised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said Thomas was desperate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSame thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin&#39;s voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas was trying to computer.<\/p>\n<p>Then toward Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>I understood what he was calculating.<\/p>\n<p>He could not leave empty-handed.<\/p>\n<p>The card was his only reason to risk staying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarold,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you shoot me, the archive still exists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral places.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was a lie.<\/p>\n<p>But he didn&#39;t know that.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel glanced at me.<\/p>\n<p>She understood His successors turned it into something larger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho took over?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas discovered the name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour husband called it the Grey Circle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Grey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Grey isn&#39;t one person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a title.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor whoever controls the network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about Tessa.<\/p>\n<p>The gray-haired man.<\/p>\n<p>The scar.<\/p>\n<p>The expensive coat.<\/p>\n<p>She had called him Mr. Grey because Nolan had.<\/p>\n<p>But if Mr. Grey was a title, then the man we were looking for could be almost anyone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the years?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho were they?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first was Voss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoss?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter his conviction, he realized prison didn&#39;t end his influence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo he became Mr. Grey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the second?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin looked at Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone you know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel&#39;s face went blank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel Cross.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bank manager.<\/p>\n<p>The man who had supposedly helped Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>The man whose death we had just learned might have been connected to the network.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was Mr. Grey?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor six years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why would he help Thomas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he wanted out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas found out Samuel had been protecting the network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas confronted him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the key.<\/p>\n<p>The safe-deposit box.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel had asked Nolan about 3127.<\/p>\n<p>He had known.<\/p>\n<p>He had been afraid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Samuel give Thomas the archive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what did he give him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA warning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat warning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin looked at the memory card in Rachel&#39;s hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat the third archive wasn&#39;t hidden in a bank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere was it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas hid it inside the only place nobody would search.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel touched the sparrow pendant.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said it wasn&#39;t hidden in a bank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father put it on you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was twenty-three.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were the safest place he had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t he tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you would have told your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>Martin continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Elaine would have investigated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if Elaine investigated, they would have killed her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hated how easily the sentence sounded plausible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to Thomas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin took a breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was poisoned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#39;t move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cancer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of it was real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas already had cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My knees weakened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the treatment was manipulated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone at the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWrong medication.
