Daniel had been older, more rebellious, and unwilling to accept the man's decisions.

When Daniel left home, Matthew stayed.

Their relationship became complicated.

They spoke occasionally.

Then not at all.

Years later, Daniel returned briefly.

That was when Eleanor noticed the dark sedan.

I looked at Henry.

“You think Daniel was following Matthew?”

“I don't know.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“Neither did Matthew.”

“Then why was he afraid?”

“He wasn't afraid of Daniel.”

She paused.

“He was afraid of what Daniel knew.”

The room became quiet again.

“What did he know?”

Eleanor looked at me.

“About your husband's father.”

I frowned.

“Matthew's father died before we married.”

“Yes.”

“What does he have to do with the accident?”

“I don't know.”

“That isn't good enough.”

“I know.”

I stood.

“I have spent two years believing I understood my husband's life. Now I'm finding out that I knew only part of it.”

Eleanor's eyes filled.

“I wanted to protect you.”

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

I shook my head.

“Protection without honesty is still a decision made for someone else.”

She lowered her gaze.

Henry said quietly, “She's right.”

I looked at him.

He didn't defend himself.

That made it easier to listen.

Eleanor eventually gave me the only address she still had for Daniel.

It was an old property outside town.

The paper was yellowed.

The ink had faded.

I stared at the address.

“Do you think he'll still be there?”

“No,” Eleanor said.

“Then why keep it?”

“Because it was the last place Matthew knew where he lived.”

The following morning, Henry drove me there.

I almost told him not to come.

Then I remembered the promise he had made to Matthew.

I needed answers.

And whether I liked it or not, Henry knew parts of the story I didn't.

The drive was quiet.

Neither of us played music.

After nearly an hour, we reached an old neighborhood surrounded by tall trees and narrow roads.

The house was smaller than I expected.

The windows were dusty.

The mailbox leaned sideways.

No one answered when Henry knocked.

I walked around the side.

There was an old shed behind the house.

Its door was partly open.

Inside were boxes, tools, and several pieces of furniture covered with sheets.

Henry found a metal cabinet.

“Look.”

Inside were folders.

Most contained bills and old documents.

Then I saw Matthew's name.

I pulled the folder out.

There were photographs.

Matthew as a teenager.

Daniel beside him.

Their father standing behind them.

And in the background, barely visible, was a dark sedan.

My stomach tightened.

“This car.”

Henry examined the photograph.

“It could be the same one.”

I found another picture.

Same sedan.

Different location.

Then another.

Again.

It had been part of their lives long before the accident.

But who owned it?

We found the answer in an old registration document.

The sedan belonged to their father.

I stared at the page.

“He was dead,” I whispered.

Henry nodded.

“He was.”

“Then who was driving it?”

We searched the remaining files.

One name appeared repeatedly.

A family business manager named Victor Hale.

I didn't recognize him.

But Henry did.

“I've heard that name.”

“Where?”

“After the accident.”

My heart began pounding.

“What did he have to do with it?”

Henry shook his head.

“I don't know.”

We found a notebook hidden beneath the bottom drawer.

Inside were Matthew's handwritten notes.

Dates.

License plate numbers.

Names.

And one sentence circled twice.

Victor knows about the money.

I looked at Henry.

“What money?”

He didn't answer.

I turned another page.

Matthew had written that his father's company had been hiding debts.

Daniel had discovered irregular transfers.

He believed someone had been moving money through accounts connected to the family business.

Matthew had become involved only after Daniel contacted him.

The date beside the first entry was six months before Matthew died.

I sat on the dusty floor.

“This was happening while I was married to him.”

Henry nodded.

“Apparently.”

I read further.

Matthew had written that Daniel believed someone was watching him.

Then came the name Victor again.

And beneath it, a note.

If anything happens, look at the accounts.

I looked up.

“This wasn't just an accident.”

Henry didn't answer.

“We don't know that,” he said.

“Matthew was investigating money.”

“Yes.”

“Someone was watching him.”

“Yes.”

“The family car appeared near him repeatedly.”

“Yes.”

“And he told me to ask about the sedan.”

Henry took a breath.

“We still need proof.”

I hated hearing that.

But he was right.

We couldn't turn suspicion into truth simply because the pieces frightened us.

Then I found an old envelope tucked into the notebook.

It contained a bank statement.

Several large transfers had been made from the family company.

One recipient appeared again and again.

Victor Hale.

The final transfer was dated three days before the accident.

I stared at it.

Henry leaned over my shoulder.

“That could be motive.”

“Could be.”

“But not proof.”

I nodded.

We put everything back exactly where we'd found it.

Before leaving, I looked around the shed once more.

Something caught my eye beneath a broken chair.

A small key.

Attached to it was a faded metal tag.

There were two numbers engraved on it.

217.

I picked it up.

Henry stared.

“What is it?”

“I don't know.”

Then I noticed a tiny inscription on the back.

Matthew's handwriting.

Bank.

I looked at Henry.

“He left another clue.”

We drove back without discussing what it meant.

That afternoon, I called the bank listed on the statement.

They confirmed that the account still existed.

But there was a problem.

I was not authorized to access it.

Only the account holder could.

And the account holder was not Matthew.

It was Daniel.
