The letters leaned slightly to the right, just as they always had when he wrote quickly. One corner of the envelope was softened with age, and there was a faint brown mark near the seal.<\/p>\n<p>I reached for it.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Henry stood several feet away, watching without moving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want me to leave?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor remained seated, her hands folded tightly in her lap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was given to me at the hospital,\u201d she said. \u201cMatthew told me not to open it. He said it was for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned the envelope over.<\/p>\n<p>The seal was intact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never read it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot even once?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I believed her.<\/p>\n<p>There was something about the envelope that made lying seem impossible. It had survived two years untouched, carrying the last words of a man none of us could ask for clarification.<\/p>\n<p>I slid one finger beneath the flap.<\/p>\n<p>The paper tore softly.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a single folded sheet.<\/p>\n<p>I unfolded it carefully.<\/p>\n<p>The first line nearly broke me.<\/p>\n<p>My darling,<\/p>\n<p>I had to stop reading.<\/p>\n<p>My vision blurred.<\/p>\n<p>I pressed the paper against the table and took a slow breath. Henry lowered his eyes. Judge him by what he does afterward.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>The room was silent.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Henry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew about this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn&#39;t know Matthew wrote about you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked back at the letter.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew continued.<\/p>\n<p>I met him briefly after the crash. I don&#39;t know his name, and I don&#39;t know whether he will ever find you.
