A narrow strip of warm light crossed the dark floor, stopping just before my bare feet.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, Henry was speaking in a low voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can&#39;t keep pretending everything is fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor answered almost immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou aren&#39;t pretending.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou promised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what I promised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a pause.<\/p>\n<p>I pressed one hand against my stomach.<\/p>\n<p>The baby moved faintly beneath my palm.<\/p>\n<p>I had no idea whether the sensation was real or simply my imagination, but I suddenly felt protective in a way I had never experienced before.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever was happening inside that room, I needed to understand it.<\/p>\n<p>But I was afraid of what I might hear.<\/p>\n<p>Henry lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe deserves the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what would telling her tonight accomplish?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe should know before the child is born.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause every day I say nothing makes me feel worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>What could possibly be so terrible that Henry believed silence itself was becoming a betrayal?<\/p>\n<p>My mind began searching through everything that had happened since our marriage.<\/p>\n<p>Had I misunderstood something?<\/p>\n<p>Was there another woman?<\/p>\n<p>Had Henry lied about his past?<\/p>\n<p>Was there some financial problem?<\/p>\n<p>Was the baby in danger?<\/p>\n<p>Then Eleanor spoke again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is finally happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Henry answered quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn&#39;t make it right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could hear movement inside the room.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps Eleanor had stood up.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice became softer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t know what this could do to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what keeping it from her is doing to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another silence.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>The floorboard beneath me gave a tiny creak.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped instantly.<\/p>\n<p>Neither of them reacted.<\/p>\n<p>Henry continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see her every day. I see how much she still loves him. How much she suffered.
