He put it on speaker. I answered while pacing toward the front door, giving our address, Lily's age, describing the coughing and the powder.

"What powder?" the dispatcher asked.

"Baby powder."

Behind me, Natalie said, "It wasn't supposed to—"

Mom snapped, "Natalie, stop talking."

That was the first moment fear cut through my panic.

Not fear for Lily. That already consumed everything.

This was different.

My mother wasn't confused.

She was managing Natalie.

The ambulance arrived in less than ten minutes, though those minutes expanded until they seemed larger than the entire morning. The paramedics took Lily from me on the living-room floor. One placed a mask over her face while another asked what she might have inhaled.

"Baby powder," I said.

"Anything else?"

"I don't know."

The paramedic looked at me sharply.

Natalie stood several feet away, hugging herself.

I pointed at her.

"Ask her."

Mom grabbed my wrist.

"Stop it."

I pulled free.

"She said she did something."

"I said no such thing," Natalie whispered.

I stared at her.

"You said it was supposed to scare me."

"I was panicking."

"Why would you say that?"

"Because everybody was screaming."

The paramedic interrupted us.

"If there is any possibility the child was exposed to another substance, we need to know now."

Natalie said nothing.

"Natalie."

Mom stepped closer to her.

Dad's voice hardened. "Jenna, enough."

The paramedics lifted Lily onto the stretcher.

I followed them.

Nothing my family said after that mattered.

Inside the ambulance, the world became equipment and clipped instructions. A monitor beeped beside Lily. The oxygen mask looked enormous against her face. One paramedic worked while another asked me about allergies, medications, medical history.

"None. She's healthy."

"Any cleaning chemicals near the changing area?"

"No."

"Medication?"

"No."

"Pesticides?"

"No."

The word struck something inside me.

I saw again the dusty mark on Natalie's jeans.

My stomach turned.

"I don't know."

The paramedic looked up.

"What do you mean?"

"My sister was in the house."

It sounded absurd even as I said it.

"She made some kind of joke. I don't know what she did."

The hospital doors opened before I could explain further.

Lily disappeared into a treatment room surrounded by people whose names I couldn't retain. Nurses cut away part of her clothing. Someone drew blood. Someone else asked me to repeat the story.

Powder.

Coughing.

Difficulty breathing.

Possible contamination.

They took the bottle seriously enough to send someone to retrieve it.

That frightened me more than if they had dismissed my suspicion.

Daniel arrived forty minutes later.

I saw him running down the corridor still wearing his work clothes. His face when he saw me nearly broke whatever remained holding me upright.

"Where is she?"

"They're working on her."

"What happened?"

"I don't know."

That was all I could say.

I didn't know.

And yet pieces were already arranging themselves in my mind.

Natalie near the sink.

The dust on her jeans.

Her startled expression.

The bottle.

Her sentence.

It was supposed to scare you.

Daniel crouched in front of me.

"Jenna."

I realized I was shaking.

"I think Natalie did something to the powder."

His face emptied.

"What?"

"I don't know what."

"Where is she?"

"Coming with Mom and Dad, I think."

He stood.

I caught his hand.

"Don't."

"Don't what?"

"Go looking for her. Stay here."

His jaw worked.

Then he sat beside me.

When my family arrived, Daniel did not greet them.

Natalie had been crying. Her eyes were swollen and her mascara had left dark marks underneath them. Mom kept one arm around her shoulders.

I noticed that immediately.

Her granddaughter was behind a hospital door struggling to breathe.

Mom was comforting Natalie.

Dad approached us.

"Any news?"

"No."

He nodded, then looked at Daniel.

"This got blown out of proportion at home."

Daniel stared at him.

"Our daughter can't breathe."

"I meant the argument."

"What argument?"

Dad glanced at me.

I answered before he could.

"Natalie said whatever happened was supposed to scare me."

Natalie began crying harder.

"I didn't say it like that."

"There is only one way to say those words."

Mom's expression hardened.

"She's terrified, Jenna."

"So is Lily."

"Of course she is."

"No. Lily isn't terrified. Lily is six months old and doesn't understand why she can't breathe."

Mom recoiled as though I had insulted her.

"That's enough."

Daniel stood.

"No, it isn't."

Dad stepped forward.

"Watch your tone."

Daniel laughed once, without humor.

"My baby is in there because your daughter may have put something in her powder, and you're worried about my tone?"

"We don't know that."

"Then why is Natalie acting like she knows what happened?"

Natalie suddenly shouted, "It was flour!"

Everyone stopped.

A nurse at the desk looked toward us.

I stood.

"What?"

Natalie wiped her face.

"I switched it with flour."

My knees felt weak.

"Why?"

"It was a joke."

"What was funny?"

"I wanted to see if you'd notice."

I stared at her.

"You put flour in Lily's powder bottle?"

"Yes."

"Today?"

Natalie hesitated.

Mom answered for her.

"She made a stupid mistake."

"When?"

"Jenna—"

"When did she do it?"

Natalie looked down.

"This morning."

The dusty mark.

The kitchen sink.

The nursery.

"While I was upstairs?"

She nodded.

Daniel moved toward her.

Dad blocked him.

"Nobody is touching anybody."

Daniel's hands curled into fists.

"Your daughter tampered with something used on my baby."

"It was flour."

"Then why is Lily in intensive care?"

Nobody answered.

That question changed the air.

If Natalie had replaced powder with harmless flour, why had Lily nearly stopped breathing?

A doctor approached us.

"Parents of Lily Carter?"

Daniel and I turned simultaneously.

"I'm Dr. Morrison."

She was perhaps forty, composed without seeming cold. She led us into a small consultation room.

My parents tried to follow.

Dr. Morrison stopped them.

"Parents only for now."

For once, my mother's objections did not matter.

Inside, Dr. Morrison explained that Lily's respiratory distress was severe enough that they were moving her to pediatric intensive care. They had found irritation inconsistent with a minor exposure to ordinary baby powder.

Daniel gripped my hand.

"Is she going to be okay?"

"We're doing everything we can."

That was not an answer.

Doctors give you certain phrases when certainty would be dishonest.

I asked about contamination.

"We're testing samples."

"The bottle?"

"We have it."

"My sister says she replaced the powder with flour."

Dr. Morrison's expression barely changed.

"That information is important."

"Would flour do this?"

"Not typically in the amount you're describing."

The room became very quiet.

"What would?"

"There are several possibilities. We shouldn't speculate before the laboratory results."

"But you're saying something else might have been in there."

"I'm saying we need to determine exactly what Lily was exposed to."

They let us see her later.

A ventilator was breathing for my daughter.

No parent is prepared for the size of a breathing tube in a baby's mouth.

Lily looked impossibly small beneath the hospital blanket. Tape crossed her cheeks. Wires disappeared beneath her gown. The machine beside her produced a measured sigh.

In.

Out.

In.

Out.

Daniel put his forehead against mine.

Neither of us spoke.

When we returned to the corridor, Natalie was gone.

"Where is she?" I asked.

Mom said, "Your father took her downstairs."

"Why?"

"Because you're treating her like a murderer."

My head snapped toward her.

"She admitted tampering with Lily's powder."

"With flour."

"Something else was in it."

"You don't know that."

"The doctor does."

Mom's lips parted.

I watched fear appear.

Not surprise.

Fear.

"You knew," I said.

Her face changed again.

That was enough.

"What did she put in the bottle?"

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"What did Natalie put in it?"

Mom reached for me.

I stepped back.

"Don't touch me."

"You're hysterical."

"My daughter is on a ventilator."

"Which is exactly why you should calm down."

I laughed.

It sounded unfamiliar.

Dad returned with Natalie.

She wouldn't look at me.

I walked toward her.

"What else was in the bottle?"

"Nothing."

"The doctor says flour doesn't explain this."

"I don't know."

"Then look at me."

She wouldn't.

"Natalie."

Mom caught my arm.

I pulled away.

She grabbed harder.

"Stop attacking your sister."

"I'm asking her a question."

"You're making everything worse."

"Worse than what?"

My voice rose.

"Worse than Lily not being able to breathe?"

Dad stepped between us.

"That's enough, Jenna."

"No."

His expression changed.

All my childhood instincts recognized that look.

The warning.

The expectation that I would obey.

For the first time, I didn't.

"Move."

"You need to control yourself."

"Move."

I tried to step around him.

His hand struck my face.

The sound was startlingly loud.

For a second, the corridor disappeared.

Then pain spread across my cheek.

Daniel lunged forward.

Two nurses came running.

Mom grabbed my hair from behind.

"You are destroying this family!"

I screamed, more from shock than pain.

Security rushed in.

Hands separated everyone.

And through it all, Natalie stood against the wall staring at the floor.

Something fell from her jacket pocket.

A phone.

It skidded beneath a chair.

A nurse picked it up.

The screen was still illuminated.

She looked down.

Then her expression changed.

"Doctor," she called.

Dr. Morrison stepped from Lily's room.

The nurse handed her the phone.

Dr. Morrison read what was on the screen, looked at Natalie, and then looked at my mother.

"Nobody leaves this floor," she said.

Click Here to continue read next: PART3: The Phone Natalie Dropped Contained a Conversation My Mother Never Expected Anyone Outside Our Family to Read

For a moment, nobody moved.
