Julian\u2019s mother, Beatrice, was removing framed photographs from the living-room shelves. His father, Richard, was wrapping pieces of my grandmother\u2019s crystal in newspaper. Near the kitchen island stood Elena Marquez, barefoot, drinking coffee from my blue ceramic mug while wearing the emerald-green silk robe Julian had given me on our fifth anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>And Julian, my husband of eight years, was arranging divorce papers on the counter.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody looked embarrassed.<\/p>\n<p>That was the part I remembered most clearly later.<\/p>\n<p>They behaved as if I were the unexpected visitor.<\/p>\n<p>Julian glanced toward the stairs and smiled. \u201cGood. I simply hadn\u2019t been informed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew we were unhappy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnhappy and secretly filing legal documents are different conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His patience disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is why talking to you is impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Talking to me is inconvenient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I placed the petition back on the counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou needed my money before you needed me gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want the truth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve been checked out of this marriage for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Interesting.<\/p>\n<p>I had spent years protecting his business reputation, hosting investors, rearranging holidays around his meetings and quietly covering household expenses whenever Harrington Development had another temporary emergency.<\/p>\n<p>But apparently I had been absent.<\/p>\n<p>Julian continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElena understands what I need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elena lowered her eyes with practiced modesty.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her robe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure she does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her head lifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t need to insult me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beatrice intervened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVivian, dignity would serve everyone better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>She had been packing my belongings for almost half an hour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen perhaps you should demonstrate some.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face reddened.<\/p>\n<p>Julian slapped his palm against the island.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed toward the boxes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have money. The debt is settled. The divorce is happening.
