\nRichard\u2019s final message remained on Beth\u2019s phone.

\nNOW LET\u2019S SEE WHICH SISTER IS WILLING TO PAY AGAIN.
\nDetective Ortiz immediately tried to trace the call.
\nIt had come through an encrypted application installed on a contraband phone inside Richard\u2019s prison.
\nBy the time officers entered his cell, the phone was gone.
\nRichard was sitting calmly on his bed.
\nHe denied making the call.
\nWhen guards searched the security footage, they discovered that the camera outside his cell had stopped recording for exactly nine minutes.
\n\u201cHe still has people helping him,\u201d Beth said.
\n\u201cHe always has,\u201d I replied.
\nSamuel began investigating Martin Sloan.

\n\u201cWhat settlement?\u201d
\n\u201cWalter\u2019s entire trust transfers to you. You pay Sloan according to your contract. After the transfer clears, Martin gives you the cabinet.\u201d
\nSamuel wrote a message and turned it toward Beth.
\nAgree to consider it. Ask for proof.
\nBeth read it.
\n\u201cHow do I know you still have the documents?\u201d
\nA video arrived.
\nMartin Sloan stood beside the cabinet from Room 214.
\nHe removed the original agreement and held it close to the camera.<\/p>\n

\nThe call ended.
\nDetective Ortiz turned off the recorder.
\n\u201cWe can use the exchange to arrest Sloan and recover the documents.\u201d
\n\u201cWhat about Richard?\u201d I asked.
\n\u201cHe is already serving decades. This gives us evidence that he is directing extortion from prison.\u201d
\nSamuel shook his head.
\n\u201cSloan will never bring the cabinet unless he believes the settlement is real.\u201d
\n\u201cThen we make him believe it,\u201d I said.
\nFor the next twenty-four hours, Samuel prepared a false settlement agreement.
\nIt appeared to transfer the entire trust to Beth.

\nHe chose the abandoned Hail Mechanical machine shop where Dad and Richard had started the company.
\nThe building had been empty for years.
\nBroken windows covered the floor.
\nThe old company sign still hung above the entrance, faded by weather.
\nHAIL MECHANICAL\u2014BUILT ON TRUST.
\nBeth stared at the words.<\/p>\n

\u201cWas that Dad\u2019s idea?\u201d
\n\u201cYes.\u201d
\n\u201cRichard must have laughed every time he saw it.\u201d
\nPolice officers surrounded the building before we entered.
