Maybe the chocolates spoiled during delivery.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe emergency room doctor does not believe this was food poisoning,\u201d she replied. \u201cThe children showed signs of ingesting a toxic chemical.\u201d<br \/>\nNathan stopped smiling.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat chemical?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe laboratory is still running tests.\u201d<br \/>\nThe detective turned toward me.<br \/>\n\u201cMrs. Ellis, were the chocolates sealed when you received them?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYes.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWho knew you would be home that morning?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cMy son.\u201d<br \/>\nNathan\u2019s eyes snapped toward me.<br \/>\n\u201cI sent her a birthday gift. His heart rhythm is becoming more stable.\u201d<br \/>\nEmily covered her mouth and began sobbing.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat was it?\u201d Nathan asked.<br \/>\nThe doctor looked at Detective Bennett before answering.<br \/>\n\u201cA concentrated pesticide. It appears to have been injected into the centers of the chocolates.\u201d<br \/>\nInjected.<br \/>\nThe word struck me like ice.<br \/>\nThis was not an accident at a factory.<br \/>\nSomeone had deliberately filled those chocolates with poison.<br \/>\n\u201cWill he wake up?\u201d I asked.<br \/>\n\u201cWe believe he has a good chance, but the next several hours are critical.\u201d<br \/>\nEmily leaned against the wall.<br \/>\nNathan did not comfort her.<br \/>\nHe stared at the floor, whispering something I could not hear.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d I asked.<br \/>\n\u201cNothing.\u201d<br \/>\nI stepped closer.<br \/>\n\u201cYou said this wasn\u2019t supposed to happen.\u201d<br \/>\nNathan\u2019s head shot up.<br \/>\n\u201cI said the children didn\u2019t deserve this.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat isn\u2019t what I heard.\u201d<br \/>\nHis eyes filled with anger.<br \/>\n\u201cYou\u2019ve always done this, Mom. I didn\u2019t know they were poisoned. Nathan only said Margaret shouldn\u2019t have brought them back.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBrought them back?\u201d Detective Bennett repeated.<br \/>\nEmily closed her eyes.<br \/>\nNathan turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t say another word.\u201d<br \/>\nThe detective looked directly at him.<br \/>\n\u201cMr. Ellis, why would you describe chocolates delivered to your mother as being brought back?\u201d<br \/>\nNathan said nothing.<br \/>\nEmily began shaking.<br \/>\n\u201cHe made them in our kitchen,\u201d she whispered.<br \/>\nNathan lunged toward her, but the officer grabbed his arm.<br \/>\n\u201cShe\u2019s lying!\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI saw the molds,\u201d Emily continued. \u201cHe told me they were a surprise for Margaret.
