You do not get to stand beside me while I learn why.\u201d<br \/>\nThe officer escorted him into the yard.<br \/>\nKaren saw her brother being held beside the patrol car and looked from him to Travis.<br \/>\nThe two men who had spent years telling the women in our family not to worry were now standing under blue lights with their hands where police could see them.<br \/>\nThere was a lesson in that.<br \/>\nI returned to Eleanor\u2019s call.<br \/>\n\u201cTell me everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI can tell you what I witnessed,\u201d she said. \u201cWalter will have to tell you the rest.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWalter has been dead for six years.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat is why he left the recorder.\u201d<br \/>\nI looked at the little black machine inside the steel box.<br \/>\n\u201cDid he know Paul was involved?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHe suspected. He did not want to believe it.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNeither did I.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBelieving is not the same as knowing, Dee. Press play.\u201d<br \/>\nThe recorder had one button marked with a strip of yellow tape.<br \/>\nI pressed it.<br \/>\nFor a few seconds, there was only static.<br \/>\nThen I heard Walter cough.<br \/>\nThe sound cut through me so sharply that I had to sit down.<br \/>\nSix years disappeared.<br \/>\nI could see him at our kitchen table with his reading glasses low on his nose and a cup of coffee growing cold beside him.<br \/>\nHis voice came through weak but clear.<br \/>\n\u201cSeptember fourteenth. Eight twenty-three in the evening. Paul and Travis are in the kitchen. They believe I am asleep.\u201d<br \/>\nThere was a click.<br \/>\nThen the voices changed.<br \/>\nThey sounded farther away, recorded from Walter\u2019s coat pocket or the table beside his chair.<br \/>\nTravis spoke first.<br \/>\n\u201cThe certificate matures when she turns seventy. We have six years.\u201d<br \/>\nPaul answered.<br \/>\n\u201cShe won\u2019t give it to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe won\u2019t give it to us now. After six years alone, she\u2019ll be different.\u201d<br \/>\nI stopped breathing.<br \/>\nPaul\u2019s recorded voice continued.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat if she cashes it herself?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe doesn\u2019t understand investments.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe understands money.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen we make it about the grandchildren. We tell her it keeps everything in the family.\u201d<br \/>\nThere was a pause.<br \/>\nA glass touched the kitchen counter.<br \/>\nThen Paul said the sentence that emptied something inside me.<br \/>\n\u201cIf that doesn\u2019t work, we tell her she\u2019s getting forgetful.\u201d<br \/>\nOn the recording, Travis laughed.<br \/>\n\u201cBy seventy, everyone will believe it.\u201d<br \/>\nThe workshop became silent again.<br \/>\nI could hear the police radios outside and Karen demanding answers from her husband.<br \/>\nI pressed stop.<br \/>\nEleanor remained on the phone.<br \/>\n\u201cI am sorry,\u201d she said.<br \/>\n\u201cDid Walter confront them?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNot about that conversation. He wanted to know how far they would go.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThey planned this before he was buried.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYes.\u201d<br \/>\nI looked through the open workshop door.<br \/>\nPaul was watching me.<br \/>\nHe knew what I had heard.<br \/>\nI pressed play again.<br \/>\nWalter\u2019s voice returned.<br \/>\n\u201cSeptember fifteenth. I checked the consulting account. The missing seventy-four thousand dollars went to Morrow Ridge Holdings. The company was registered three months ago. The listed owners are Travis Cole and Paul Bennett.\u201d<br \/>\nMy son.<br \/>\nMy son\u2019s company.<br \/>\nMy husband\u2019s stolen money.<br \/>\nThe recording clicked, and another conversation began.<br \/>\nThis time Walter\u2019s voice was stronger.<br \/>\n\u201cTell me what Morrow Ridge is.\u201d<br \/>\nPaul answered first.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s an investment.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWith money you stole from my account?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWe borrowed it.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cPeople ask before they borrow.\u201d<br \/>\nTravis stepped in.<br \/>\n\u201cThe money will be returned with interest.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat is what thieves say when someone catches them early.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe found a lake property,\u201d Paul said. \u201cTwenty-four acres. Cabins, boat slips, vacation rentals. It could change everything for this family.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhose family?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cOurs.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou mean yours.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cMorrow Ridge could be our legacy.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cMy legacy is sitting in the next room, Paul. Her name is Delia.\u201d<br \/>\nSomething struck the table.<br \/>\nWalter had probably put down his fist.<br \/>\n\u201cReturn every dollar by Friday,\u201d he said, \u201cor I call the police.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cMorrow Ridge will collapse,\u201d Paul pleaded.<br \/>\n\u201cThen let it.\u201d<br \/>\nThe recording ended.<br \/>\nI stared at the machine.<br \/>\nSeventy-four thousand dollars had been taken from Walter\u2019s consulting account six years earlier and returned only because he caught them.<br \/>\nThey had not abandoned the plan.<br \/>\nThey had simply waited for a larger account.<br \/>\nMy account.<br \/>\nThe certificate was never going into a family investment portfolio.<br \/>\nIt was going into Morrow Ridge.<br \/>\nI carried the notebook and recorder into the yard.<br \/>\nKaren stood between the two patrol cars.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat was on it?\u201d she asked.<br \/>\nI looked at Paul.<br \/>\n\u201cWould you like to tell your sister?\u201d<br \/>\nHe lowered his head.<br \/>\nTravis shouted from the back seat of the patrol car.<br \/>\n\u201cDon\u2019t say anything without Martin!\u201d<br \/>\nPaul flinched.<br \/>\nI opened Walter\u2019s notebook.<br \/>\n\u201cMorrow Ridge Holdings.\u201d<br \/>\nKaren frowned.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019ve heard that name.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI am sure you have.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cTravis said it was one of his clients.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIt belongs to him and Paul.\u201d<br \/>\nShe turned toward her brother.<br \/>\n\u201cThat\u2019s not true.\u201d<br \/>\nPaul said nothing.<br \/>\n\u201cTell her,\u201d I said.<br \/>\nHe looked at the police officer holding his arm.<br \/>\n\u201cIt was supposed to be a small development.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAt Miller\u2019s Lake?\u201d<br \/>\nHis silence answered.<br \/>\nKaren\u2019s expression broke.<br \/>\n\u201cThe cabins?\u201d<br \/>\nPaul nodded.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat cabins?\u201d I asked.<br \/>\nKaren covered her mouth.<br \/>\n\u201cThe ones Travis showed us last Saturday.\u201d<br \/>\nMy real birthday.<br \/>\nThe whole family had not gone to Miller\u2019s Lake merely to enjoy Melissa\u2019s sister\u2019s boat.<br \/>\nThey had gone to inspect the property they planned to purchase with my money.<br \/>\nKaren began shaking her head.<br \/>\n\u201cHe said Martin was bringing in an investor.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI was the investor,\u201d I said. \u201cNobody bothered to inform me.\u201d<br \/>\nPaul finally spoke.<br \/>\n\u201cMama, the lake trip wasn\u2019t meant to hurt you.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat is becoming the family prayer.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWe had to meet Martin that day. He came in from Atlanta.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn my birthday.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIt was the only day everyone was available.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI was available.\u201d<br \/>\nHe closed his eyes.<br \/>\n\u201cWe couldn\u2019t bring you before the deal was ready.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe deal required my money.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWe were going to explain everything at the party.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou were going to put papers under my hand after feeding me cake.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cMorrow Ridge would have paid you more than the credit union.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYour first attempt at Morrow Ridge began with seventy-four thousand dollars stolen from your dying father.\u201d<br \/>\nPaul looked toward the ground.<br \/>\n\u201cWe returned it.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBecause he caught you.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWe made a mistake.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cA mistake is forgetting salt in a recipe. You built a company around a theft.\u201d<br \/>\nKaren walked to the patrol car and stared through the glass at her husband.<br \/>\n\u201cYou took Dad\u2019s money?\u201d<br \/>\nTravis looked away.<br \/>\n\u201cYou planned to take Mama\u2019s?\u201d<br \/>\nHis mouth moved, but the window blocked his answer.<br \/>\nShe struck the glass with her open palm.<br \/>\n\u201cHow much have you put into this?\u201d<br \/>\nPaul answered for him.<br \/>\n\u201cEverything.\u201d<br \/>\nKaren turned around slowly.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<br \/>\nPaul\u2019s voice fell.<br \/>\n\u201cTravis refinanced your house.\u201d<br \/>\nShe stared at him.<br \/>\n\u201cHe told me we were lowering the interest rate.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou signed the papers.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHe told me what they were!\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat is not the same as reading them.\u201d<br \/>\nThe cruelty of the sentence landed before Paul understood he had said it.<br \/>\nKaren walked toward him.<br \/>\nFor a moment, I thought she might strike her brother.<br \/>\nInstead, she removed the silver bracelet he had given her for Christmas and dropped it at his feet.<br \/>\n\u201cYou sound exactly like my husband.\u201d<br \/>\nPaul looked at me.<br \/>\n\u201cMama, I never wanted anyone to lose their home.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou only wanted to gamble with all of them.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIt wasn\u2019t gambling. Martin had permits, plans, buyers\u2014\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWho is Martin?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cMartin Hale. He handles the property side.\u201d<br \/>\nEleanor gasped through my phone.<br \/>\nI had forgotten she was still listening.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat is it?\u201d I asked.<br \/>\n\u201cAsk Paul whether Martin Hale notarized the transfer request.\u201d<br \/>\nI repeated the question.<br \/>\nPaul did not answer.<br \/>\nThe officer carrying the forged documents looked through the pages.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe notary is Martin J. Hale.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWho is he?\u201d Karen demanded.<br \/>\nPaul rubbed his face.<br \/>\n\u201cHe\u2019s an attorney.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAn attorney for whom?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cMorrow Ridge.\u201d<br \/>\nEleanor\u2019s voice became urgent.<br \/>\n\u201cDee, Martin Hale lost his notary commission nine years ago.\u201d<br \/>\nThe officer heard her through the speaker.<br \/>\n\u201cMa\u2019am, can you repeat that?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHe notarized two fraudulent property transfers for a client of Walter\u2019s. Walter reported him. Hale was barred from acting as a notary in this state.\u201d<br \/>\nThe officer examined the seal.<br \/>\n\u201cThis document is dated eleven days ago.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen the seal is false,\u201d Eleanor said.<br \/>\nPaul\u2019s face had turned gray.<br \/>\nI understood why Travis had told Karen to call Martin.<br \/>\nMartin did not merely know what they had done.<br \/>\nHe was the person who made illegal paper look official.<br \/>\nThe officer stepped away to radio the information.<br \/>\nI turned another page in Walter\u2019s notebook.<br \/>\nNear the back, I found a list of county parcel numbers.<br \/>\nOne belonged to the Miller\u2019s Lake property.<br \/>\nAnother looked familiar.<br \/>\nI had seen those numbers every year on my tax bill.<br \/>\nMy house.<br \/>\nBeside it, Walter had written:<br \/>\nNever let M.H. near the deed.<br \/>\nI showed it to Eleanor.<br \/>\nShe went quiet.<br \/>\n\u201cWalter knew,\u201d she whispered.<br \/>\n\u201cKnew what?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat Martin would eventually come after the house if the certificate was not enough.\u201d<br \/>\nPaul shook his head.<br \/>\n\u201cNo one is taking the house.\u201d<br \/>\nI looked at him.<br \/>\n\u201cYou told me nobody was taking the certificate.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cMorrow Ridge only needed the account.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cTravis said the business is short two hundred and eighty-seven thousand dollars. My remaining certificate money would not have covered the lake purchase, the cabins, and your existing losses.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe lender was going to finance the construction.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAgainst what collateral?\u201d<br \/>\nHe said nothing.<br \/>\nI stepped closer.<br \/>\n\u201cAgainst what collateral, Paul?\u201d<br \/>\nHis eyes moved toward my brick house.<br \/>\nThat was enough.<br \/>\nMy phone rang again.<br \/>\nThis time it was the young man from the credit union.<br \/>\nHis name was Nathan Brooks, and he had promised to call if the fraud department uncovered anything else.<br \/>\n\u201cMrs. Bennett,\u201d he said, \u201cI\u2019m sorry to contact you so late, but the bank\u2019s attorney believes you need to hear this immediately.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI am standing with two police officers. You are on speaker.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat may be helpful.\u201d<br \/>\nHe sounded shaken.<br \/>\n\u201cAfter you reported the forged transfer request, our legal department searched for any other documents filed under your name. We found a loan application connected to Morrow Ridge Holdings.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHow much?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cFour hundred and fifty thousand dollars.\u201d<br \/>\nKaren made a broken sound.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat did they use as security?\u201d I asked.<br \/>\n\u201cYour residence.\u201d<br \/>\nThe brick house behind me seemed to shift.<br \/>\n\u201cThey cannot borrow against a house they do not own.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat is why we checked the county property records.\u201d<br \/>\nPaul began backing away.<br \/>\nThe officer grabbed his arm.<br \/>\nNathan continued.<br \/>\n\u201cA quitclaim deed was filed three weeks ago.
