Everything in this house belongs to both of us.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cThat motorcycle was given to me before we were married. My name is the only name on the title.\u201d<br \/>\nBeverly placed her champagne glass on the table.<br \/>\n\u201cOh, don\u2019t start turning this into some legal drama,\u201d she said. \u201cMargaret is your wife. She had every right to sell it.\u201d<br \/>\nI looked at Margaret.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat did you give the buyer?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe keys, the registration, and the title.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhere did you find the title?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIn the locked drawer of your desk.\u201d<br \/>\nI almost laughed, but there was nothing funny about what she had done.<br \/>\n\u201cThat wasn\u2019t the title.\u201d<br \/>\nMargaret blinked.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat paper was an insurance appraisal from twenty-seven years ago. The original title is in my safe-deposit box.\u201d<br \/>\nThe color drained from her face.<br \/>\nTrevor stopped smiling.<br \/>\nI leaned forward.<br \/>\n\u201cIf my name was written on the bill of sale, who signed it?\u201d<br \/>\nNobody answered.<br \/>\nThen Margaret lifted her chin.<br \/>\n\u201cI signed it for you.\u201d<br \/>\nThe kitchen became completely silent.<br \/>\nEven the football announcer on the radio seemed suddenly too loud.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cYou signed my name?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou would never have agreed,\u201d she snapped. \u201cSomeone had to make the decision.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat is called forgery.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDon\u2019t use that word,\u201d Beverly said.<br \/>\n\u201cIt is the correct word.\u201d<br \/>\nMargaret pushed her chair back.<br \/>\n\u201cYou\u2019re making me sound like a criminal because I sold a machine you barely rode.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI stopped riding it because my knees are bad. That did not give you permission to steal it.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI did not steal anything!\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen why did you wait until I left the house?\u201d<br \/>\nHer mouth opened, but no words came.<br \/>\nI stood and walked toward the small cabinet beside the telephone.<br \/>\nInside was a black notebook containing the motorcycle\u2019s serial number, engine number, registration history, and photographs I had taken every year.<br \/>\nMy father had taught me to record everything.<br \/>\nI carried the notebook to the telephone and dialed the Henderson County Sheriff\u2019s Office.<br \/>\nMargaret stared at me.<br \/>\n\u201cWho are you calling?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe police.\u201d<br \/>\nBeverly jumped to her feet.<br \/>\n\u201cHarold, stop being ridiculous.\u201d<br \/>\nI held up one finger and waited for the dispatcher to answer.<br \/>\n\u201cMy name is Harold Bennett,\u201d I said calmly. \u201cI need to report a stolen motorcycle.\u201d<br \/>\nMargaret rushed toward me.<br \/>\n\u201cYou cannot report it stolen! I sold it!\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWithout my permission and with a forged signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I read the serial number from my notebook.<br \/>\nThe dispatcher asked when the motorcycle had been taken.<br \/>\n\u201cAt approximately eleven o\u2019clock this morning.\u201d<br \/>\nShe asked whether I knew who had it.<br \/>\n\u201cA classic motorcycle dealership outside Asheville. My wife can provide the buyer\u2019s name and telephone number.\u201d<br \/>\nMargaret grabbed my arm.<br \/>\n\u201cHang up.\u201d<br \/>\nI pulled away.<br \/>\nThe dispatcher told me that an officer would contact the dealership immediately and that a deputy was being sent to our house.<br \/>\nWhen I put down the receiver, the celebration was over.<br \/>\nBeverly emptied her glass in one swallow.<br \/>\nTrevor moved toward the back door.<br \/>\n\u201cWhere are you going?\u201d I asked.<br \/>\n\u201cI don\u2019t want to be involved in a family argument.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou were already here when I arrived.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean I was involved in the sale.\u201d<br \/>\nMargaret looked at him sharply.<br \/>\n\u201cTrevor, don\u2019t leave.\u201d<br \/>\nThose three words told me more than she intended.<br \/>\nI turned toward him.<br \/>\n\u201cHow did the buyer know where I lived?\u201d<br \/>\nTrevor shrugged.<br \/>\n\u201cMargaret probably told him.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI didn\u2019t,\u201d Margaret said.<br \/>\nTrevor\u2019s eyes moved toward her.<br \/>\nIt was only a glance, but I saw it.<br \/>\n\u201cSo you contacted the buyer,\u201d I said.<br \/>\n\u201cI knew a man who dealt in classic vehicles,\u201d Trevor admitted. \u201cMargaret asked me to find out whether the motorcycle was worth anything.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDid you enter my workshop?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIt wasn\u2019t locked.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat was not my question.\u201d<br \/>\nHe looked at the floor.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>The telephone rang again at 4:51 p.m.<br \/>\nMargaret and Trevor both froze.<br \/>\nI picked it up.<br \/>\nBefore I could speak, a man shouted, \u201cWhy are the police in my office?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIs this the man who bought my motorcycle?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI purchased it legally from your wife. I have a signed bill of sale.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou have a bill of sale bearing a forged signature.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI paid fifty-five thousand dollars in cash!\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe money is still in this house. The motorcycle belongs to me.\u201d<br \/>\nThe man lowered his voice.<br \/>\n\u201cYour wife showed me a copy of your driver\u2019s license. She had the registration, the keys, and a signed authorization.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI never signed an authorization.\u201d<br \/>\nTrevor slowly placed his champagne glass on the counter.<br \/>\nThe buyer continued.<br \/>\n\u201cA man named Trevor arranged everything. He told me you were too sick to handle the sale yourself.\u201d<br \/>\nI looked directly at Trevor.<br \/>\nHis face had turned gray.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat else did Trevor tell you?\u201d I asked.<br \/>\n\u201cHarold, hang up,\u201d Trevor said.<br \/>\nThe buyer heard him.<br \/>\n\u201cIs he there?\u201d he demanded. \u201cPut him on the phone.\u201d<br \/>\nTrevor backed away.<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\nThe buyer\u2019s voice became louder.<br \/>\n\u201cHe guaranteed the ownership documents were genuine. Now there are two deputies standing in my showroom, and they say I may be in possession of stolen property.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cGive the motorcycle to the deputies,\u201d I said.<br \/>\n\u201cI want my money back.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou can discuss that with the woman who took it.\u201d<br \/>\nI handed the telephone to Margaret.<br \/>\nShe pressed it to her ear.<br \/>\n\u201cI can explain,\u201d she said.<br \/>\nThe man shouted so loudly that I could hear every word from across the kitchen.<br \/>\n\u201cYou told me Harold wanted it gone before he died!\u201d<br \/>\nMargaret\u2019s face collapsed.<br \/>\nI felt something cold move through my chest.<br \/>\nBefore he died.<br \/>\nI had gone to Asheville that morning for an ordinary heart checkup. My doctor had told me I was healthy for a man of seventy-two.<br \/>\nBut Margaret had apparently told a stranger something very different.<br \/>\nShe hung up without answering him.<br \/>\n\u201cYou told that man I was dying?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI only said you had health problems.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI have arthritis and high blood pressure.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI had to give him a reason for why you weren\u2019t present.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou already had a reason. You knew I would say no.\u201d<br \/>\nA sheriff\u2019s vehicle pulled into the driveway six minutes later.<br \/>\nDeputy Lena Ortiz entered the kitchen carrying a tablet and a small body camera clipped to her uniform.<br \/>\nShe listened while I explained what had happened.<br \/>\nThen she asked Margaret to place the fifty-five thousand dollars on the table.<br \/>\nMargaret reluctantly retrieved a thick envelope from her handbag.<br \/>\nDeputy Ortiz counted the money while we watched.<br \/>\nIt was all there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Bennett,\u201d she said, \u201cdid your husband give you permission to sell this motorcycle?\u201d<br \/>\nMargaret folded her arms.<br \/>\n\u201cHe knew I wanted it gone.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat wasn\u2019t the question.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWe are married.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDid he give you permission?\u201d<br \/>\nMargaret looked away.<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDid you sign his name?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIt was just paperwork.\u201d<br \/>\nDeputy Ortiz stopped counting.<br \/>\n\u201cSigning another person\u2019s name on a legal document is not \u2018just paperwork.\u2019\u201d<br \/>\nBeverly stepped between them.<br \/>\n\u201cMy sister made a mistake. She has already offered to return the money.\u201d<br \/>\nMargaret turned toward her.<br \/>\n\u201cI did not offer to return anything.\u201d<br \/>\nBeverly\u2019s expression changed.<br \/>\nFor the first time, the two sisters looked less like partners and more like people preparing to blame each other.<br \/>\nDeputy Ortiz asked for proof of ownership.<br \/>\nI opened my black notebook and removed the photocopies my father had placed inside it.<br \/>\nShe studied the serial numbers, then looked at me.<br \/>\n\u201cDo you know exactly what kind of motorcycle this is?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYes.\u201d<br \/>\nMargaret gave a bitter laugh.<br \/>\n\u201cIt is an old motorcycle covered in rust.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIt wasn\u2019t rust,\u201d I said. \u201cIt was the original factory finish.\u201d<br \/>\nI removed another document from the notebook.<br \/>\n\u201cMy father worked as a test mechanic after he returned from Korea. That motorcycle was one of three factory racing prototypes built in 1952. He helped design its modified engine and later bought it directly from the manufacturer.\u201d<br \/>\nTrevor\u2019s eyes widened.<br \/>\nDeputy Ortiz examined the document.<br \/>\n\u201cThere are only three?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cOnly two are known to still exist.\u201d<br \/>\nMargaret stared at me.<br \/>\n\u201cYou never told me that.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou never asked. Every time I tried to speak about the motorcycle, you laughed.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHow much is it worth?\u201d<br \/>\nI looked at the envelope containing the fifty-five thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe last professional appraisal valued it at seven hundred and eighty thousand.\u201d<br \/>\nBeverly gripped the back of her chair.<br \/>\nTrevor whispered something under his breath.<br \/>\nMargaret looked as if I had struck her.<br \/>\n\u201cSeven hundred and eighty thousand dollars?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat was six years ago. A collector from California offered me nine hundred thousand last winter.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou refused nine hundred thousand?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYes.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhy?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBecause it was my father\u2019s.\u201d<br \/>\nMargaret dropped into her chair.<br \/>\n\u201cYou let us worry about money while that thing sat in the workshop?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWe are not poor, Margaret. The house is paid for, we have retirement savings, and you were drinking champagne ten minutes ago because you thought you had stolen enough money for a cruise.\u201d<br \/>\nDeputy Ortiz\u2019s tablet made a soft sound.<br \/>\nShe read the new message, and her expression became serious.<br \/>\n\u201cThe deputies recovered the motorcycle,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is being secured until ownership is confirmed.\u201d<br \/>\nRelief passed through me so strongly that I had to grip the table.<br \/>\nMy father\u2019s motorcycle was safe.<br \/>\nBut Deputy Ortiz did not look relieved.<br \/>\n\u201cThere is another problem.\u201d<br \/>\nShe turned the tablet toward us.<br \/>\nThe dealership had sent her copies of the emails arranging the sale.<br \/>\nThere were photographs of my workshop, close-ups of the motorcycle\u2019s serial number, and a copy of my driver\u2019s license.<br \/>\nSome of the pictures had been taken while I was asleep upstairs.<br \/>\nOthers had been taken nearly eight months earlier.<br \/>\n\u201cThis was not planned this morning,\u201d Deputy Ortiz said. \u201cSomeone has been arranging this sale since January.\u201d<br \/>\nMargaret looked at Trevor.<br \/>\n\u201cYou told me you contacted him last week.\u201d<br \/>\nTrevor said nothing.<br \/>\nDeputy Ortiz scrolled through the messages.<br \/>\n\u201cThe dealership owner claims Mr. Trevor Davis promised him that the motorcycle could be resold overseas for more than six hundred thousand dollars. The dealer would keep half the profit, and the other half would be transferred to a company called B&amp;T Property Consulting.\u201d<br \/>\nBeverly\u2019s champagne glass slipped from her hand and shattered on the floor.<br \/>\nDeputy Ortiz looked at her.<br \/>\n\u201cBeverly and Trevor,\u201d she said. \u201cB&amp;T.\u201d<br \/>\nMargaret rose so quickly that her chair fell backward.<br \/>\n\u201cYou said you were helping me!\u201d<br \/>\nBeverly stepped away from her.<br \/>\n\u201cYou wanted the motorcycle gone. We found a way to make everyone happy.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cEveryone except me,\u201d I said.<br \/>\nDeputy Ortiz raised one hand.<br \/>\n\u201cThere is more.\u201d<br \/>\nShe opened the final email in the chain.<br \/>\nIt had been sent by Beverly at 11:38 the previous night.<br \/>\nAt first, Deputy Ortiz tried to turn the screen away.<br \/>\nBut I had already seen the subject line.<br \/>\nAFTER THE MOTORCYCLE, WE TAKE THE HOUSE.<br \/>\n\u201cLet me read it,\u201d I said.<br \/>\n\u201cMr. Bennett, perhaps we should speak privately.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI want to read it.\u201d<br \/>\nShe hesitated, then handed me the tablet.<br \/>\nThe message was short.<br \/>\nMargaret believes Harold is becoming mentally confused. His doctor\u2019s appointment tomorrow gives us the perfect opportunity. Once the motorcycle is gone, she will sign the competency papers.
