I’m not letting you use our daughter to end this conversation.”
“My mother isn’t here.”
“But her voice is.”
He looked down.
“I’m sorry about dinner.”
“Why wasn’t I invited?”
“You were exhausted.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
He rubbed both hands over his face.
“Mom thought you would make the evening uncomfortable.”
“How?”
“You’ve been sensitive since the birth.”
“I gave birth six days ago.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
He looked toward Lena, then back at me.
“Can we speak privately?”
“No.”
His expression hardened.
“So your father and your lawyer get to be involved, but my mother doesn’t?”
“My father sent a car when I asked. Your mother sent a message telling me my husband deserved peace away from me.”
“That message was cruel. I told her that.”
“When?”
“This morning.”
“After you discovered who my father is?”
The question landed between us.
Roland leaned back.
“I don’t care about your father’s money.”
“Then why did your mother call me twelve times after Faye recognized his name?”
“I can’t control her.”
“That is what you always say before doing exactly what she wants.”
He stood.

“I came here to fix my marriage, not to be interrogated.”
“No,” I said. “You came because, for the first time, I left before you were ready to dismiss me.”
His eyes moved toward the brass key on the table.
“What does that open?”
“My mother’s cabinet.”
“And why is it here?”
“Because my father prepared for the possibility that one day I might need to remember who I was before I married you.”
Roland’s face changed.
Lena opened the folder.
“There is one more issue.”
She removed a sheet of paper and placed it in front of him.
All the color left his face.
I had not seen the document before.
At the top were the words PETITION FOR EMERGENCY TEMPORARY CUSTODY.
My name appeared in the first paragraph.
The document claimed I was experiencing a severe postpartum emotional crisis.
It claimed I had behaved unpredictably since Wren’s birth.
It claimed Roland feared I might leave with our daughter.
The filing had been prepared three days earlier.
Three days before the family dinner.
Three days before I packed my bag.
I looked at Lena.
“Where did you get this?”
“It was submitted to the court electronically at nine twelve this morning,” she said. “The request has not been granted.”
Roland stared at the last page.
I followed his eyes.
There, beneath a statement swearing that every accusation was true, was his signature.
My chest felt hollow.
“You said your mother was only emotional,” I whispered.
“Simone, I can explain.”
“You signed this before you came here.”
“She said it would protect Wren until you calmed down.”
“I was calm enough to feed her, change her, and care for her while you ate dessert.”
“I didn’t read everything.”
“You signed a sworn statement saying I was dangerous.”
“I thought it was temporary.”
“You thought taking my daughter from me should be temporary?”
Roland reached across the table.
I pulled my hand away.
“That isn’t the worst part,” Lena said.
Roland turned toward her.
For the first time, I saw real fear in his eyes.
Lena removed a second document from the folder.

“This is the original draft sent to Roland last week.”
Last week.
Before Wren was even born.
I looked at the name of the person who had created the document.
It wasn’t Roland’s attorney.
It wasn’t his mother.
It was Faye.
And beside her name was an email address I recognized from the hospital’s administrative office.
My sister-in-law had accessed my medical file the night Wren was born.
But when Lena turned to the final page, I realized Faye had not done it alone.
A second electronic signature appeared beneath hers.
It belonged to the doctor who had tried to keep me in the hospital against my will.
And underneath that signature was a handwritten note:
Once Simone is declared unstable, Roland will have full control of the Caldwell trust distribution made on Wren’s birth.
I slowly lifted my eyes to my husband.
“You told them about Wren’s trust?”
Roland opened his mouth, but no words came out.
Dad stepped away from the window.
“What trust distribution?” I asked.
He looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.
“The one your mother created for her first grandchild,” Dad said. “The one worth forty-two million dollars.”
Roland stood so quickly that his chair fell backward.
And that was when I understood the dinner had never been about giving him one peaceful night away from me.
It had been about making sure I looked unstable when they came to take everything.
Including my daughter…

Click
