Richard was supposed to inherit it. When he started stealing, my father discovered it.”

“And covered it up.”

“At first.”

“What changed?”

“Thomas.”

My heart pounded.

“Thomas threatened to expose all of them.”

“Richard. Grandpa.”

“Everyone.”

“And then he disappeared.”

Mom nodded.

“What happened that night?”

She looked at me.

“I wasn’t there.”

“But you saw the videotape.”

“Part of it.”

“What was recorded?”

“Your grandfather had security cameras around the property.”

“In the early nineties?”

“He’d installed them after equipment started disappearing.”

“What did the camera capture?”

Mom’s voice dropped.

“Richard and Thomas fighting.”

“Physically?”

“Yes.”

“About what?”

“The money.”

“And?”

“About me.”

I froze.

“You?”

Tears filled her eyes.

“Thomas and I had made a terrible mistake.”

My stomach dropped.

“You slept together.”

She closed her eyes.

“Once.”

The room disappeared around me.

Daniel had been her fiancé.

Richard had loved her.

Thomas was Richard’s brother.

And somewhere inside that wreckage, I had been conceived.

“Were you already with Daniel?”

“Yes.”

I couldn’t speak.

Mom whispered, “I loved Daniel. What happened with Thomas wasn’t some secret relationship. Daniel and I had fought. I was drunk. Thomas was upset about his family. We both made a choice we regretted immediately.”

“And then you got pregnant.”

“Yes.”

“Did Daniel know?”

“I was going to tell him everything.”

“But Dad got rid of him first.”

“I didn’t understand that at the time.”

“And Thomas?”

“He knew the baby might be his.”

“Me.”

She nodded.

“What did he want?”

“To wait until you were born and do whatever I wanted.”

“That doesn’t sound like a man who needed to disappear.”

“He didn’t disappear because of you.”

There it was again.

“Then why?”

“Because Thomas had copied Richard’s financial records.”

“The evidence.”

“Yes.”

“He was going to the police.”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

Mom’s voice shook.

“Richard found out.”

I stared at her.

“The tape.”

She nodded.

“They fought at your grandparents’ house.”

“Did Dad kill him?”

“No.”

Her answer was immediate.

“Then why did everyone say Thomas was dead?”

“Because Thomas wanted Richard to believe he was.”

I blinked.

“What?”

“Thomas survived the fight.”

“Survived?”

Mom looked terrified.

“Richard pushed him down the basement stairs.”

Claire gasped.

“Thomas hit his head.”

“Was Dad trying to kill him?”

“I don’t know.”

“But Thomas lived.”

“Yes.”

“Then what?”

“My father found him.”

“Grandpa.”

“Yes.”

“And instead of calling police?”

“He hid him.”

Nothing about that made sense.

“Why?”

“Because Thomas begged him to.”

“Why would he do that?”

“Because Thomas realized something while he was lying at the bottom of those stairs.”

“What?”

Mom whispered, “Richard wasn’t acting alone.”

I stared at her.

“The fraud.”

She nodded.

“Your grandfather wasn’t just covering it up.”

My stomach tightened.

“He was part of it.”

“Yes.”

“So Thomas couldn’t trust him.”

“No.”

“Then why let Grandpa hide him?”

“Because Thomas needed Richard to believe he was dead long enough to escape.”

I looked at the clock.

Thirty-two minutes.

I grabbed my jacket.

Claire immediately stood.

“I’m coming.”

“The message says alone.”

“And you’re not stupid enough to obey someone threatening you.”

She was right.

Five years ago, I might have interpreted courage as doing something reckless alone.

Now I understood courage sometimes meant admitting you needed help.

I called the police.

I told them everything.

The threat.

The address.

The warehouse.

Daniel.

My father.

The box.

The officer told me not to approach the property.

I agreed.

Then I called Marlene.

“Luca stays with you.”

“Of course.”

“Don’t open the door for anyone.”

“I won’t.”

Then I called Daniel.

Nothing.

Again.

Nothing.

I looked at Mom.

“If Thomas is alive, why would someone send me to the house?”

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“Who else knows about the box?”

“Richard.”

“Daniel?”

“He knew it existed.”

“Grandpa?”

“He’s dead.”

“Thomas?”

Mom looked at me.

“Thomas put the tape inside.”

I stopped.

“What?”

“He recovered it after your grandfather died.”

“Then why is my name written on it?”

Mom began crying again.

“Because Thomas made a copy.”

“When?”

“After you were born.”

I stared at her.

“The message said my name was written on it before I was born.”

“I know.”

“So they’re lying.”

“Or they’re talking about another tape.”

Silence.

Another tape.

Claire whispered, “Evan.”

I already understood.

“What was on the original tape?”

Mom looked frightened.

“I don’t know.”

“You just said you watched part of it.”

“The security tape.”

“So there are two.”

“I think so.”

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?”

Nothing.

Then breathing.

“Who is this?”

A man’s voice spoke.

Older.

Weak.

“Evan.”

I looked at Mom.

“Thomas?”

The breathing stopped.

Then:

“Yes.”

My knees nearly gave out.

My mother covered her mouth.

I put the phone on speaker.

“Where are you?”

“At the house.”

“Are you alone?”

A pause.

“No.”

Claire immediately dialed the police from her phone.

“Who’s with you?”

Thomas whispered, “Someone I should’ve dealt with thirty-four years ago.”

“Richard?”

“No.”

“Daniel?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Thomas coughed.

“I need you to listen carefully.”

“I’m listening.”

“Do not come through the front door.”

“Why?”

“Because they’re waiting for you.”

My blood went cold.

“Who?”

“The person who sent the messages.”

“Who is it?”

Thomas ignored the question.

“Go around the back. There’s a cellar entrance beneath the porch.”

“I’m not going anywhere until police arrive.”

“Good.”

That answer surprised me.

“Thomas.”

“Yes?”

“Are you my father?”

Silence.

Long enough that I thought the call had disconnected.

Then he said:

“I don’t know.”

My chest tightened.

“Mom says—”

“I know what Margaret believes.”

“Then why don’t you know?”

“Because there were three possibilities.”

Nobody moved.

I stared at my mother.

She looked as confused as I felt.

“Three?”

Thomas whispered, “Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“Me.”

“Yes.”

Then silence.

“Who’s the third?”

Mom suddenly sat upright.

“No.”

Her voice was barely audible.

Thomas heard her.

“Margaret.”

“No.”

She started shaking her head.

“Don’t.”

I looked at her.

“Mom?”

Thomas said, “You never told him?”

“Thomas, please.”

“Told me what?”

My mother began crying.

Thomas’s voice hardened.

“Richard wasn’t simply obsessed with Margaret because he loved her.”

I felt something cold move through my chest.

“What are you saying?”

“He believed the baby might be his.”

I stared at Mom.

She couldn’t look at me.

“Mom.”

“Evan—”

“You told me you and Dad weren’t together.”

“We weren’t.”

“Then how could I be his?”

She covered her face.

And I understood before she answered.

One night.

One secret.

Another choice buried for thirty-four years.

“Was it consensual?”

Claire asked quietly.

Mom looked up.

Her face told us everything.

My anger disappeared instantly.

“Mom.”

She began sobbing.

“He came to my apartment after Daniel and I fought.”

My hands curled into fists.

“He knew I had been drinking.”

“Did he hurt you?”

She couldn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Thomas spoke through the phone.

“That’s why I went after Richard that night.”

Everything shifted.

The fight wasn’t only about money.

Thomas had learned what Richard had done to my mother.

I felt sick.

“Did Daniel know?”

“No.”

“Does he know now?”

“I told him six months ago.”

That explained Daniel’s return.

The rage.

The warehouse.

The letters.

Everything.

Then I heard a noise on Thomas’s end.

A door.

Thomas stopped speaking.

“Thomas?”

Nothing.

“Thomas?”

A second voice came through.

A woman’s voice.

“Hello, Evan.”

I didn’t recognize it.

“Who is this?”

She laughed softly.

Then my mother went completely white.

I looked at her.

“You know her.”

Mom whispered one word.

“Rebecca.”

The woman on the phone laughed again.

“Hello, Margaret.”

Claire looked between us.

“Who is Rebecca?”

My mother couldn’t speak.

Thomas shouted in the background.

“Don’t tell him anything!”

A loud impact followed.

“Thomas!”

Rebecca calmly returned to the phone.

“You’ve spent tonight learning about fathers, Evan.”

“Who are you?”

“Someone your family erased much more successfully than Daniel.”

“What do you want?”

“The box.”

“Why?”

“Because there’s something inside it that belongs to me.”

“What?”

“The original tape.”

“What’s on it?”

Rebecca became silent.

Then she said:

“Your birth.”

I couldn’t process the words.

“What?”

“The tape wasn’t made the night Thomas disappeared.”

Mom began shaking.

“No.”

Rebecca continued.

“It was recorded months later.”

“Rebecca, stop!”

My mother tried to stand.

A monitor beside her began beeping faster.

I grabbed her hand.

“What is she talking about?”

Rebecca answered for her.

“Ask Margaret where you were actually born.”

I stared at Mom.

“At St. Matthew’s.”

That was what I’d always been told.

Rebecca laughed.

“No, Evan.”

Mom whispered, “Please.”

Rebecca continued.

“You were born in your grandparents’ house.”

My mouth went dry.

“Why?”

“Because Margaret went into labor early.”

Mom closed her eyes.

“And because there were things happening in that house nobody wanted documented.”

“What things?”

Rebecca’s voice changed.

No amusement now.

Only anger.

“People deciding which baby would leave that house.”

I froze.

Claire grabbed my arm.

“What did she say?”

I could barely speak.

“Which baby?”

Rebecca whispered:

“You weren’t the only child born that night.”

The room went silent.

Mom started sobbing.

I looked at her.

“Mom.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Was I a twin?”

She couldn’t answer.

“Mom!”

Her eyes opened.

And finally she whispered:

“Yes.”

My entire body went numb.

“Boy or girl?”

“A boy.”

“What happened to him?”

Mom stared at the phone.

Rebecca answered.

“He lived.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“Where is he?”

A long pause.

Then Rebecca said:

“You’ve already met him.”

My heart slammed against my ribs.

“Who?”

Before she could answer, another sound came through the phone.

Sirens.

Then shouting.

Rebecca cursed.

The call disconnected.

I immediately called back.

Nothing.

Claire was already speaking with the dispatcher.

Police had reached my grandmother’s property.

I looked at Mom.

“Who is my brother?”

She was crying so hard she could barely breathe.

“Mom.”

“I thought he died.”

“Rebecca says he lived.”

“I didn’t know.”

“Who took him?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who was there when we were born?”

Mom closed her eyes.

“My father.”

“Grandpa.”

“Yes.”

“Richard?”

She nodded.

“Thomas?”

“No.”

“Rebecca?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

“Who is she?”

Mom whispered:

“She was a nurse.”

“At the hospital?”

“No.”

“Then why was she at the house?”

“Because my father paid her.”

“For what?”

Mom looked directly at me.

“To make sure nobody knew there were two babies.”

My phone buzzed.

A message from the police officer at the house.

We found Thomas. Alive.

I exhaled.

Then another message arrived.

Female suspect fled before entry.

Then:

We recovered a wooden box.

My hands started shaking.

A photograph followed.

Old documents.

Several envelopes.

Two videotapes.

And one hospital bracelet.

The officer had photographed it beside the box.

I zoomed in.

The bracelet was tiny.

Made for a newborn.

Across it was my mother’s surname.

Then:

BABY BOY B

Not A.

B.

Claire whispered, “Evan…”

But I was staring at something else.

Beneath the bracelet was a photograph.

Two newborn babies wrapped in identical blankets.

On the back, somebody had written two names.

The first:

EVAN.

The second name made me stop breathing.

Because I knew it.

I had heard it earlier that very night.

I looked at my mother.

“Mom…”

She saw my face.

“What?”

I turned the phone toward her.

Her scream filled the hospital room.

Because beneath my name, written beside my twin brother, was one word:

DANIEL.

PART 7 — BABY BOY B

For several seconds, the only sound in the hospital room was my mother’s scream.

Then the monitor beside her began alarming.

A nurse rushed through the door.

“Mrs. Cole, please lie back.”

Mom wasn’t listening.

She was staring at the photograph on my phone.

Two newborn boys.

Two names.

EVAN.

DANIEL.

“No,” she kept whispering.

“That’s impossible.”

The nurse looked at me.

“What happened?”

“Nothing. I thought I knew what was on the cassette.”

“And now?”

“Rebecca spent years trying to get it.”

“Why?”

“Because she said it proved what happened to Nathan.”

My chest tightened.

“Then Nathan might not have died.”

Thomas whispered:

“No.”

“Where did he go?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who would know?”

“Rebecca.”

I paced the hallway.

“Why would Rebecca take a newborn?”

“Money.”

“From who?”

Thomas didn’t answer.

“Thomas?”

“Your grandfather.”

I stopped.

“Grandpa paid her?”

“I believe so.”

“To do what?”

“I don’t know.”

“Stop saying that!”

Claire looked at me.

I lowered my voice.

“I’m sorry.”

Thomas said quietly, “You have every right to be angry.”

“I don’t want a right to be angry. I want the truth.”

“I know.”

“Then give me something useful.”

He breathed heavily.

“Find Daniel.”

“The older Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because there’s something strange about him.”

My chest tightened.

“What?”

“The photograph.”

“What about it?”

“I recognize the handwriting.”

“The name Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“Whose is it?”

Thomas whispered:

“His.”

I froze.

“Daniel wrote his own name on a photograph of my twin brother?”

“That’s what it looks like.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

Then another thought hit me.

“Thomas, how old is Daniel?”

“Sixty-three.”

“And Rebecca?”

Silence.

“Thomas?”

“About sixty.”

My mind began working.

Rebecca was a nurse when I was born.

Daniel had been engaged to Mom.

They were both connected to that night.

“What aren’t you telling me?”

Thomas didn’t answer.

Then Detective Alvarez took the phone.

“Mr. Cole, Thomas needs medical attention.”

“Wait.”

“He’s being transported.”

“Tell him I’ll meet him at the hospital.”

“I will.”

The call ended.

Claire looked at me.

“What are you thinking?”

“Daniel knows more.”

“Obviously.”

“No.”

I showed her the photograph.

“Look.”

She zoomed in.

“What?”

“The ink.”

My name looked faded.

The second name looked darker.

Newer.

“Someone changed it.”

Claire nodded.

“Maybe recently.”

“Daniel had access to the box.”

“Did he?”

“He knew it existed.”

I called him.

Straight to voicemail.

Again.

Nothing.

Then I remembered the warehouse.

Dad had been there with him.

I called my father.

He answered immediately.

“Evan.”

“Where’s Daniel?”

Silence.

“Dad.”

“Gone.”

“What does that mean?”

“He left.”

“Where are you?”

Another pause.

“Driving.”

“To where?”

“Your grandmother’s house.”

“No.”

“Evan—”

“Police are already there.”

“I know.”

“Then turn around.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because if they find the ledger—”

I closed my eyes.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“You still care about the money.”

“No.”

“The fraud.”

“No!”

Dad shouted so loudly I pulled the phone away.

Then his voice broke.

“The ledger doesn’t prove I stole money.”

“Mom said—”

“Your mother never knew the whole story.”

“Then tell me.”

Dad breathed heavily.

“I moved the money.”

“For Grandpa?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he ordered me to.”

“That doesn’t make you innocent.”

“I know.”

“Did you benefit?”

“No.”

“Then where did it go?”

Silence.

“Dad.”

“To Rebecca.”

My body went cold.

Claire heard him.

“Why was Grandpa paying Rebecca?”

Dad whispered:

“At first, I thought it was because she knew about the fraud.”

“And now?”

“I know it wasn’t.”

“What was he paying her for?”

“Children.”

I couldn’t speak.

Claire whispered, “What?”

Dad continued.

“Rebecca worked unofficially with private adoption brokers.”

My stomach turned.

“You’re saying she sold babies?”

“I don’t know exactly what she did.”

“But Grandpa paid her.”

“Yes.”

“The night I was born?”

“I didn’t know until later.”

“Did he give Nathan to her?”

Dad started crying.

“I think so.”

My knees weakened.

Claire guided me into a chair.

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

“Why would my grandfather give away his grandson?”

“I’ve asked myself that for thirty-four years.”

“You were there.”

“Not when it happened.”

“Mom said you were.”

“I left the room.”

“For how long?”

“Maybe forty minutes.”

“And when you returned?”

Dad’s voice became almost inaudible.

“There was one baby.”

Me.

“What did Grandpa say?”

“That the other boy hadn’t survived.”

“And you believed him?”

“I wanted to.”

“What did Rebecca say?”

“The same thing.”

“Did you see a body?”

“No.”

“Did Mom?”

“No.”

My hands started shaking.

“Then nobody saw Nathan dead.”

“No.”

The hallway seemed to tilt.

My twin brother might have been alive.

Taken.

Given away.

Sold.

And nobody had looked because the adults around me had been too busy protecting their own secrets.

“Why did Daniel write his name on the photograph?”

Dad stopped breathing for a second.

“How do you know that?”

“Thomas recognized his handwriting.”

Dad said nothing.

“Dad.”

“Get away from Daniel.”

That answer terrified me.

“Why?”

“Evan, listen to me.”

“What does Daniel have to do with my brother?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then why should I stay away from him?”

“Because Daniel didn’t come back six months ago because your mother contacted him.”

I stood.

“What?”

“He contacted her first.”

“Mom said—”

“Your mother lied.”

“Why would she?”

“Because she was protecting him.”

“From what?”

Dad whispered:

“From me.”

I laughed bitterly.

“That’s not exactly reassuring.”

“No. Listen.”

His breathing became faster.

“Daniel came to me six months ago.”

“Why?”

“He wanted money.”

“For what?”

“He said he had proof Nathan survived.”

My heart stopped.

“What proof?”

“He wouldn’t show me.”

“How much did he want?”

“Two million dollars.”

Claire covered her mouth.

“Blackmail?”

“Yes.”

“What did you do?”

“I refused.”

“And then?”

“He went to Margaret.”

I stared through the hospital-room window at Mom.

“Did he blackmail her too?”

“I don’t know.”

“Why didn’t you tell police?”

“Because everything would come out.”

“The fraud.”

“The fraud. Thomas. Margaret. not.”

“But?”

“There’s another note.”

Of course there was.

“What?”

Male identification used.

Nobody moved.

I felt cold.

“What does that mean?”

“We don’t know.”

Mom suddenly whispered, “The bracelets.”

I turned.

“What?”

“The babies wore identification bracelets.”

She looked at Daniel Jr.

“Rebecca prepared them.”

A terrible possibility formed.

“She could switch identities.”

Mom nodded.

My phone buzzed.

Detective Alvarez had sent photographs of several documents.

One was a handwritten sheet divided into columns.

Names.

Weights.

Payments.

Transfers.

At the bottom was a sentence circled twice:

MARGARET MUST NEVER KNOW WHICH CHILD SHE KEPT.

I stared at it.

Claire read over my shoulder.

“Oh my God.”

Mom sank into a chair.

I walked toward her.

“Mom.”

She looked at me.

I suddenly realized what this meant for her.

She wasn’t just discovering she’d lost a child.

She was discovering she might never have known which child she raised.

I knelt beside her.

She touched my face.

“I don’t care.”

Her voice broke.

“I don’t care whose blood you have.”

I closed my eyes.

“I know.”

“You are my son.”

“I know.”

“I raised you.”

“I know, Mom.”

She pulled me against her.

For several seconds, all the mysteries disappeared.

I was simply holding my mother.

Then Daniel Jr. spoke.

“My father can answer this.”

I stood.

“If we can find him.”

Daniel Jr. shook his head.

“I think I know where he went.”

“Where?”

“There’s a place he used to take me when I was little.”

“What place?”

“A cabin.”

“Where?”

“About ninety minutes north.”

“Why would he go there?”

“Because that’s where he kept everything he didn’t want me to find.”

Detective Alvarez was still on speaker.

“Do not go there.”

Daniel Jr. looked at my phone.

“I wasn’t planning to.”

Then he looked at me.

“But I know the address.”

The detective took it.

Officers were dispatched.

Then Thomas arrived at the hospital.

Two paramedics rolled him through the emergency entrance.

His forehead was bandaged.

He looked exhausted.

But when he saw Daniel Jr., he tried to stand.

“Wait.”

The paramedic stopped him.

Thomas pointed.

“Come here.”

Daniel Jr. approached slowly.

Thomas stared at his face.

Then his eyes dropped toward the silver pendant.

His expression broke.

“Where did Daniel get that?”

“He said it belonged to my mother.”

Thomas shook his head.

“No.”

He reached beneath his hospital gown and pulled out a chain.

Nothing hung from it.

Just an empty clasp.

“I gave that pendant to Margaret.”

Mom stared at him.

“You did?”

“The night Evan was born.”

“Why?”

Thomas looked at her.

“Because there were two halves.”

My heart started pounding.

“Two halves of what?”

“The pendant.”

Daniel Jr. removed his necklace.

Thomas turned it over.

There was a tiny jagged edge along one side.

A broken circle.

Half of something.

Thomas whispered:

“I had the other half.”

“Had?”

“It disappeared the night Richard pushed me down the stairs.”

I looked at Dad’s empty place in the hallway.

“Richard took it.”

“I assumed he did.”

Daniel Jr. stared at the pendant.

“Then how did my father get this?”

Thomas answered quietly.

“That’s what I want to know.”

My phone rang again.

This time the caller ID showed:

DAD.

I answered.

“Where are you?”

Richard was breathing hard.

“At the old house.”

“The police are there.”

“I know.”

“Why did you go?”

“Because there’s something they didn’t find.”

“What?”

“The other half.”

Everyone became silent.

Thomas stared at the phone.

Richard continued.

“I took it from Thomas after the fight.”

Thomas’s jaw tightened.

“Why?”

“Because there was blood on it.”

“What?”

“Thomas cut his hand when he fell. The pendant broke.”

I didn’t understand.

“Why would that matter?”

“It didn’t then.”

“And now?”

Dad’s voice became shaky.

“Now it can prove which child belongs to Thomas.”

My chest tightened.

DNA.

The old blood.

Thomas whispered, “Where is it?”

Richard heard him.

“Still where I hid it.”

“Where?”

“The basement.”

Detective Alvarez interrupted.

“Mr. Cole, identify your exact location.”

Dad ignored him.

“Evan, there’s something else down here.”

“What?”

“The wall is open.”

“What wall?”

“The compartment.”

“The box is already with police.”

“I’m not talking about that compartment.”

Thomas suddenly looked alarmed.

“What did you find?”

Dad whispered:

“A second room.”

Mom stared at him through the phone as if he were standing in front of her.

“What second room?”

“I don’t know.”

Dad’s breathing changed.

“Richard?” I said.

No answer.

Then:

“Oh my God.”

“What?”

Dad didn’t respond.

“What do you see?”

When he finally spoke, his voice was trembling.

“Cribs.”

Claire grabbed my arm.

“What?”

“Three old cribs.”

My skin prickled.

“And photographs.”

“Of babies?”

“Hundreds.”

Detective Alvarez shouted into the phone.

“Do not touch anything. Officers are coming to your location.”

Dad barely seemed to hear him.

Then he said:

“There’s a board on the wall.”

“What board?”

“Names.”

My stomach dropped.

“Mine?”

“Yes.”

“Daniel Jr.?”

“Yes.”

“Who else?”

Dad went silent.

“Dad.”

“There are dozens.”

The hallway seemed to shrink around me.

This wasn’t just about our family.

Rebecca and Grandpa hadn’t done this once.

They’d done it repeatedly.

Then Dad whispered:

“Evan, your name is crossed out.”

“What does that mean?”

“I don’t know.”

“What about Daniel’s?”

“Crossed out too.”

“And Nathan?”

Dad stopped.

“What?”

“There’s no Nathan.”

We already knew that.

Then he added:

“But there’s another Cole.”

Thomas stepped closer.

“Who?”

Dad’s breathing stopped for a second.

Then he read the name.

ELIAS COLE.

Nobody recognized it.

Mom shook her head.

“I’ve never heard that name.”

Thomas looked equally confused.

Dad continued.

“Born the same night as Evan.”

My stomach dropped.

“Another baby?”

“Apparently.”

“Male?”

“Yes.”

“Where did he go?”

Dad moved closer to the board.

“I don’t know.”

Then his voice changed.

“Wait.”

“What?”

“There’s an address.”

Detective Alvarez said, “Read it.”

Dad did.

Claire suddenly grabbed my wrist.

Her nails dug into my skin.

I looked at her.

Her face had gone completely white.

“What?”

She couldn’t speak.

“Claire.”

“I know that address.”

“How?”

Tears filled her eyes.

“It’s my mother’s old house.”

I stared at her.

“Marlene’s?”

Claire nodded.

The hallway went silent.

My heart began pounding.

“No.”

Claire immediately called her mother.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

“Marlene, pick up.”

Voicemail.

I called too.

Nothing.

Then I remembered.

Luca.

Our five-year-old son was with her.

Claire looked at me.

We understood at the same moment.

I called 911 while she grabbed her coat.

But before either of us could move, Claire’s phone rang.

Marlene.

She answered immediately.

“Mom?”

For several seconds, Claire said nothing.

Then her face changed.

“What do you mean he’s here?”

I grabbed her arm.

“Who?”

Claire put the phone on speaker.

Marlene was crying.

“I didn’t know where else to take him.”

“Take who?”

“I wanted to tell you years ago.”

“Mom, what are you talking about?”

Then another man’s voice came through the phone.

Younger than Richard.

Older than me.

“Claire?”

She froze.

“Who is that?”

Marlene whispered:

“His name is Elias.”

Nobody in the hospital hallway moved.

Claire looked at me.

Then Marlene said:

“Evan, there’s something you need to understand before you come here.”

“What?”

Her next sentence made my blood run cold.

“Elias isn’t your brother.”

I swallowed.

“Then who is he?”

Marlene started sobbing.

“He’s mine.”

Claire’s face collapsed.

“What?”

“Mom?”

“I’m sorry.”

Claire looked as though she’d been struck.

Marlene continued:

“I had a son before you.”

The hallway went silent.

Claire whispered:

“Why is his name on Evan’s grandfather’s wall?”

Marlene couldn’t answer.

But Elias did.

“Because Margaret wasn’t the only woman who gave birth in that house.”

I felt the floor disappear beneath me.

“What are you saying?”

Elias’s voice became quieter.

“Our mothers were there together.”

I looked at Mom.

She was shaking her head.

“No.”

Elias continued.

“And Rebecca didn’t switch two babies.”

A long pause.

“She switched three.”

Claire gripped my hand.

I could barely breathe.

“Why?”

Elias answered:

“Because one of those babies was supposed to disappear.”

“Which one?”

Silence.

Then Elias said:

“You.”

I stopped breathing.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Elias’s answer came slowly.

“Because Richard wasn’t the person your grandfather was protecting.”

I looked toward the phone.

“Then who was?”

Elias whispered:

“Your mother.”

PART 9 — THE BABY WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO DISAPPEAR

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

I stared at Claire’s phone.

Then at my mother.

Elias’s words echoed through the hospital hallway.

“Your grandfather was protecting your mother.”

Mom shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice was weak.

“No, that’s not true.”

Elias answered through the speaker.

“Margaret, I wish it wasn’t.”

“Who told you that?”

“Rebecca.”

Thomas immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t believe anything Rebecca says.”

“I don’t.”

“Then why are you repeating it?”

“Because I found proof.”

That stopped everyone.

I moved closer to the phone.

“What proof?”

“Come to Marlene’s.”

“No.”

Claire’s answer was immediate.

“My son is there.”

“Luca is safe.”

“You expect me to trust that?”

“No.”

Elias’s voice remained calm.

“Bring police.”

That surprised me.

He wasn’t asking us to come alone.

He wasn’t threatening anyone.

He sounded tired.

Almost relieved.

Like a man who had spent years waiting for this night.

Detective Alvarez spoke into the phone.

“Mr. Cole, nobody goes anywhere until officers secure that residence.”

Elias heard him.

“Detective?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

A pause.

“Tell your officers to look underneath the stairs when they arrive.”

Alvarez frowned.

“Why?”

“Because Marlene kept the suitcase.”

Claire looked at the phone.

“What suitcase?”

Her mother started crying.

“Marlene?”

I said.

“What did you keep?”

She whispered:

“The things Rebecca gave me.”

“When?”

“The night Claire was born.”

Claire went completely still.

“Mom.”

“What does my birth have to do with this?”

Nobody answered.

Claire stepped closer to the phone.

“Mom.”

“I wanted to tell you.”

“Tell me what?”

Marlene began sobbing.

“I didn’t give birth to you in a hospital either.”

Claire’s face emptied.

I grabbed her hand.

“What?”

“I told everyone you were born at County General.”

“You showed me photographs.”

“Taken afterward.”

“My birth certificate?”

“Rebecca arranged it.”

Claire pulled her hand from mine.

Not because she was angry with me.

Because suddenly she needed both hands against the wall to remain standing.

“No.”

“Claire—”

“No.”

She shook her head violently.

“I am not doing this.”

Her voice cracked.

“This is Evan’s family.”

I moved toward her.

She backed away.

“No. His dead uncle is alive. His father may not be his father. His twin may not be his twin. Fine. Insane, but fine.”

She pointed toward the phone.

“But you are not going to tell me my mother has been lying about my birth too.”

Marlene whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

Claire started crying.

I stepped beside her.

This time, she let me hold her.

Five years earlier, she had been the person collapsing while I stood waiting to be instructed.

Tonight, I didn’t ask what she needed.

I simply held her.

Then Elias said something that made Claire stop crying.

“Marlene is your mother.”

Claire looked toward the phone.

“What?”

“Biologically.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Rebecca kept records.”

“Then what is the secret?”

Elias hesitated.

“Your father.”

Claire’s body became rigid against mine.

“My father died when I was fourteen.”

Marlene began crying harder.

Elias answered carefully.

“The man who raised you died when you were fourteen.”

Claire whispered:

“No.”

I felt her hand tighten around mine.

“Who was my biological father?”

Elias didn’t answer.

Marlene did.

“Thomas.”

The entire hallway went silent.

Thomas looked as if someone had struck him.

“What?”

Claire turned toward him.

I couldn’t process it.

My possible biological father.

Claire’s possible biological father.

The man standing ten feet away.

“No.”

Thomas shook his head.

“No. I never—”

Then he stopped.

His face changed.

He looked at Marlene’s phone.

“Marlene?”

She sobbed.

“I’m sorry.”

Thomas stumbled backward.

“When?”

“Thirty-five years ago.”

Thomas stared at her.

Then memory hit him.

“The company Christmas party.”

Marlene said nothing.

That was enough.

Claire pulled away from me.

“Wait.”

She looked between Thomas and the phone.

“I’m thirty-three.”

Thomas’s face went pale.

“Then…”

He couldn’t finish.

Claire did.

“You could be my father.”

My stomach twisted.

Then a worse realization hit me.

If Thomas was my biological father too—

Claire looked at me at exactly the same moment.

“No.”

She understood.

“No.”

I immediately grabbed my phone.

“Detective.”

Alvarez looked grim.

“I know.”

Claire started shaking.

“If Thomas is Evan’s father and Thomas is my father…”

She couldn’t finish.

I felt physically sick.

Our marriage.

Our son.

Luca.

Everything suddenly stood beneath a horrifying question.

Thomas shook his head violently.

“No.”

He pointed toward me.

“Evan isn’t mine.”

Mom looked at him.

“You don’t know that.”

“I do.”

Everyone froze.

I stared at Thomas.

“What did you say?”

Thomas closed his eyes.

“I know you’re not my son.”

“How?”

He looked at Mom.

Then at me.

“Because I did a DNA test.”

My mouth went dry.

“When?”

“Five years ago.”

“What?”

Claire whispered.

Thomas nodded.

“When Luca was born.”

I stepped toward him.

“You tested me without my knowledge?”

“No.”

“Then how?”

“Your father.”

“Richard?”

“He gave me a sample.”

“What sample?”

“Hair from your old childhood things.”

I stared at him.

“Why would Dad help you?”

“Because after Luca was born, Margaret contacted me.”

Mom looked down.

“I wanted certainty.”

“You’ve known for five years?”

She started crying again.

“Only that Thomas wasn’t your father.”

I felt anger rise.

Another secret.

Another decision made around me.

But one thing mattered more.

I turned toward Thomas.

“So you’re not my biological father.”

“No.”

Claire covered her mouth and began crying with relief.

I held her.

For one brief moment, the nightmare loosened its grip.

Thomas might be Claire’s father.

But he wasn’t mine.

We weren’t related.

Then Elias spoke.

“That’s why Evan was supposed to disappear.”

I looked at the phone.

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“Because Margaret’s father knew exactly who your biological father was.”

Mom whispered:

“No.”

Elias continued.

“He knew before you were born.”

“Who?”

I demanded.

“Who is my father?”

Elias didn’t answer.

Instead, he asked:

“Margaret, do you remember the night your father found out you were pregnant?”

Mom stared ahead.

“Yes.”

“What did he do?”

“He became furious.”

“At Daniel?”

“I assumed so.”

“Did he say Daniel’s name?”

Mom thought.

Then her expression changed.

“No.”

“What did he actually say?”

She swallowed.

“He said…”

Her voice faded.

“What?”

Mom looked at me.

“He said, ‘Not his child.'”

My skin prickled.

“Whose child?”

“I thought he meant Daniel.”

Elias spoke.

“He didn’t.”

Thomas suddenly looked toward me.

Something was changing in his face.

Recognition.

Fear.

“Thomas?”

He didn’t answer.

“What?”

Thomas whispered:

“Your grandfather had another son.”

Mom looked at him.

“What are you talking about?”

“Before he married your mother.”

“No.”

“He told me once.”

“When?”

“The night Richard pushed me down the stairs.”

Mom stared at him.

“He was drunk. He thought I was unconscious.”

Thomas continued.

“He was arguing with Richard upstairs.”

“What did he say?”

“He said Richard wasn’t his first disappointment.”

Richard’s voice suddenly came through Detective Alvarez’s phone from the old house.

“I found him.”

Everyone froze.

Alvarez had apparently still been connected to officers at the property.

“Richard?”

I said.

Dad sounded breathless.

“I found the photograph.”

“What photograph?”

“The one behind the board.”

Paper rustled.

Dad continued.

“It’s my father.”

Grandpa.

“He’s younger.”

“With who?”

“A woman.”

“And?”

“She’s holding a baby.”

Thomas closed his eyes.

“I knew it.”

Mom shook her head.

“No.”

Dad read handwriting from the photograph.

Samuel and Rebecca — 1962.

Rebecca.

The nurse.

The woman at the center of everything.

My stomach dropped.

“Rebecca was involved with Grandpa?”

Dad whispered:

“Apparently.”

“Who’s the baby?”

“I don’t know.”

“Turn it over.”

Silence.

Then Dad gasped.

“What?”

“The name.”

“What name?”

Dad whispered:

Daniel.

Nobody moved.

I looked at Daniel Jr.

He looked back at me.

“Daniel Sr.?”

I asked.

Thomas slowly nodded.

Suddenly pieces began rearranging themselves.

Daniel had worked with Richard.

Daniel had been close enough to the family to become engaged to Margaret.

Grandpa had hated the relationship.

Daniel had been driven away.

Not merely because Richard wanted Mom.

Because Grandpa knew something.

I felt sick.

“Daniel Sr. is Grandpa’s son.”

Thomas whispered:

“Half brother to Richard.”

Mom covered her mouth.

“And to me.”

Her voice broke.

Daniel had been her half brother.

The man she’d planned to marry.

The man she believed might have fathered me.

Mom began shaking violently.

“I didn’t know.”

I rushed toward her.

“I didn’t know.”

She repeated it over and over.

“I didn’t know.”

A nurse came running.

But Elias wasn’t finished.

“That’s why Samuel couldn’t allow Daniel and Margaret’s relationship to continue.”

I stared at the phone.

“Then why not just tell them?”

“Because revealing Daniel was his son would reveal Rebecca.”

“And the baby operation.”

“Yes.”

“So Grandpa ordered Richard to separate them.”

“Yes.”

“And when Mom became pregnant…”

“Samuel panicked.”

My heart pounded.

“Because he thought Daniel was the father.”

“At first.”

“What changed?”

“He had Rebecca test the babies.”

“DNA testing wasn’t common then.”

“Blood typing first. Later, stored samples were tested.”

“Stored samples?”

Elias answered:

“Rebecca kept blood from every child.”

Claire whispered:

“My God.”

I looked at Mom.

“Then Grandpa eventually learned Daniel wasn’t my father.”

“Yes.”

“Thomas wasn’t.”

“Yes.”

“Richard?”

Elias became silent.

My heart started pounding.

“Was Richard my father?”

“No.”

One word.

Final.

I sat down.

For thirty-four years, three men had hovered over the question of my birth.

Daniel.

Thomas.

Richard.

And apparently none of them was my father.

“Then who?”

Elias said:

“That’s what’s inside the suitcase.”

Sirens sounded faintly through Marlene’s phone.

Police had arrived at her house.

Marlene began crying harder.

“Please don’t arrest Elias. He hasn’t hurt anyone.”

Detective Alvarez spoke.

“Everyone remains calm. Let officers secure the residence.”

A few minutes passed.

They felt like hours.

Then Alvarez received confirmation.

House secure.

Elias cooperative.

Luca safe.

I finally breathed.

“Can we go?”

Alvarez nodded.

“But you’re riding with officers.”

I didn’t argue.

Neither did Claire.

Forty minutes later, we entered Marlene’s house.

Luca was asleep upstairs.

Claire checked him first.

Only after seeing our son breathing peacefully beneath his dinosaur blanket did she return downstairs.

Elias sat at the dining table.

He was fifty-something.

Older than Claire.

Younger than our parents.

Marlene sat opposite him.

Between them was an old brown suitcase.

Police stood nearby.

Elias looked at me.

“So you’re Evan.”

“Apparently.”

For the first time all night, someone almost smiled.

Then he opened the suitcase.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Hospital bracelets.

Cassette tapes.

And dozens of sealed envelopes.

He removed one envelope.

MARGARET — envelope before allowing me to open it.

Inside was an old laboratory report.

Blood groups.

Markers.

Names represented only by initials.

Then a newer DNA report.

Dated seventeen years ago.

I stared at the conclusion.

Probability of paternity: 99.98%.

My heart stopped.

Below it was the father’s name.

Not Daniel.

Not Thomas.

Not Richard.

A name I had never heard.

MICHAEL HALE.

I looked at Elias.

“Who is Michael Hale?”

He didn’t answer.

Marlene did.

“Rebecca’s younger brother.”

The room went silent.

“How did Mom know him?”

Mom wasn’t there to answer.

Elias reached into the suitcase.

He removed a photograph.

My mother looked about twenty-two.

Beside her stood a young man I had never seen.

He had my eyes.

My chin.

My smile.

I stared at him.

“That’s Michael?”

Elias nodded.

“What happened to him?”

“That’s where the story gets worse.”

I almost laughed.

“How could it possibly get worse?”

Elias turned the photograph over.

On the back:

Michael Hale — missing since February 1992.

Six months before I was born.

“Missing?”

“Officially.”

“What does that mean?”

“Rebecca knew where he was.”

“Where?”

Elias stared at me.

“Prison.”

I frowned.

“For what?”

“He confessed to killing someone.”

My stomach dropped.

“Who?”

Elias looked toward the police officers.

Then toward me.

“Samuel Cole.”

My grandfather.

“No.”

“Samuel didn’t die until years later.”

“Exactly.”

I stared at him.

“Then Michael confessed to a murder that hadn’t happened.”

Elias nodded.

“Why?”

“Because Rebecca told him Samuel was dead.”

The pattern hit me immediately.

Richard told Margaret Daniel was dead.

Rebecca told Michael Samuel was dead.

Different generation.

Same weapon.

A fake death.

“Why would Michael confess?”

“Because he believed he’d killed Samuel during a fight.”

“What fight?”

“About you.”

My hands went cold.

“He knew Mom was pregnant?”

“Yes.”

“Did he know I might be his?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“Michael confronted Samuel.”

“Why?”

“Because Samuel wanted Margaret’s pregnancy handled quietly.”

My stomach turned.

“What does that mean?”

Elias didn’t answer.

Marlene did.

“He wanted her to terminate the pregnancy.”

Mom had refused.

Samuel had panicked.

Michael had confronted him.

They fought.

Samuel fell.

Rebecca convinced Michael he’d killed him.

Then helped him disappear into the criminal justice system under another identity.

“Why would Rebecca do that to her own brother?”

Elias stared at the suitcase.

“Because Samuel paid her.”

Of course.

Money again.

Secrets again.

People treating human lives like pieces on a board.

“Is Michael alive?”

Elias looked at me.

“I don’t know.”

“How old would he be?”

“About sixty.”

“Where was he imprisoned?”

“That’s the problem.”

“What?”

“He wasn’t.”

I frowned.

“You just said—”

“Rebecca told everyone he went to prison.”

“Then where did he go?”

Elias pulled out another document.

A death certificate.

MICHAEL HALE.

Cause of death:

Suicide.

Date:

February 19, 1992.

My chest tightened.

“So he is dead.”

Elias shook his head.

“Look at who signed it.”

I looked.

The certifying nurse:

Rebecca Hale.

Fake.

Another manufactured death.

“Then Michael could still be alive.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Elias reached for one final envelope.

It had been mailed only six weeks earlier.

The return address was in Oregon.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a short letter.

Rebecca,

I’m done hiding.

You stole thirty-four years from me.

I know Margaret’s son survived.

I know his name is Evan.

And before I die, I’m going to meet my son.

I couldn’t breathe.

There was a phone number beneath the signature.

Michael.

My father.

Potentially alive.

I pulled out my phone.

Claire grabbed my wrist.

“Evan.”

I looked at her.

“Are you sure?”

No.

I wasn’t.

But I had spent my entire life surrounded by people who avoided truth because they were afraid of what it might change.

I wasn’t going to become one of them.

I dialed.

One ring.

Two.

Three.

Then someone answered.

Nobody spoke.

I swallowed.

“Michael?”

A man’s breathing came through the phone.

“Who’s this?”

My voice cracked.

“My name is Evan Cole.”

Silence.

Complete silence.

Then I heard something fall on his end.

“Say that again.”

“Evan Cole.”

The man began crying.

Not quietly.

Not carefully.

Thirty-four years seemed to break through him all at once.

“My God.”

I couldn’t speak.

Then he whispered:

“You’re alive.”

My eyes filled.

“Apparently.”

“No.”

His voice changed.

“You don’t understand.”

“What?”

“I saw them take you.”

The room went still.

“Who?”

“Rebecca and Samuel.”

My stomach dropped.

“Where?”

“The night you were born.”

I looked at Elias.

Then Marlene.

Then Claire.

“Michael, where were you?”

He began breathing harder.

“In the basement.”

“What basement?”

“Samuel’s house.”

My blood went cold.

“You were there?”

“Yes.”

“But everyone says you disappeared six months earlier.”

“That’s what Rebecca wanted them to believe.”

“Why were you hiding in the basement?”

“Because Samuel was keeping me there.”

Nobody moved.

“What?”

Michael’s voice shook.

“For seven months.”

My stomach turned.

“He imprisoned you?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I knew everything.”

“The fraud?”

“The babies.”

My chest tightened.

“Rebecca’s operation?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you escape?”

“I tried.”

“What happened?”

“Samuel threatened Margaret.”

Mom.

“And when she became pregnant?”

Michael began crying again.

“I knew the baby might be mine.”

“Me.”

“Yes.”

I could barely breathe.

“Did you see me born?”

“No.”

“But you said you saw them take me.”

“Hours later.”

“What happened?”

Michael was silent for several seconds.

Then:

“Rebecca came downstairs carrying a baby.”

“Which baby?”

“You.”

“How do you know?”

“Because she said your name.”

My skin prickled.

“What did she say?”

Michael’s voice dropped.

‘This is Evan. Samuel says this one can’t stay.’

I closed my eyes.

“Why?”

Michael began sobbing.

“Because Samuel had discovered who your father was.”

“You?”

“Yes.”

“And he wanted me gone.”

“Yes.”

“And me.”

“Yes.”

“Then how did I end up with Mom?”

Michael whispered:

“Because somebody stopped them.”

“Who?”

A long silence.

Then he said:

“Richard.”

My eyes opened.

Dad.

The man whose lies had destroyed so much.

The man I’d spent all night learning to hate.

“What did Richard do?”

Michael took a shaky breath.

“He took you out of Rebecca’s arms.”

Nobody moved.

“And then?”

“He told Samuel that if anyone touched you, he’d expose everything.”

I sat down.

Dad had lied to Mom.

Driven Daniel away.

Helped hide fraud.

Covered secrets for decades.

But that night—

He had protected me.

“Why?”

Michael whispered:

“Because Richard believed you were his.”

There it was.

Not pure heroism.

Not redemption.

But enough to save a baby.

Me.

Then Michael said:

“But Evan…”

“What?”

“Richard didn’t know Rebecca had already made the switch.”

My heart stopped.

“What switch?”

Michael’s voice became barely audible.

“The baby Richard saved wasn’t Margaret’s child.”

Nobody breathed.

I looked around the room.

At Elias.

Marlene.

Claire.

The suitcase.

The false records.

Three babies.

Three switches.

“Then who did Richard save?”

Michael answered:

“Rebecca’s son.”

I couldn’t process it.

“Rebecca had a son?”

“Yes.”

“What happened to Margaret’s baby?”

Michael began crying harder.

“That’s the question I’ve spent thirty-four years trying to answer.”

I looked at Claire.

Then asked the only question that mattered.

“Michael…”

“Yes?”

“If Richard saved Rebecca’s baby…”

My voice cracked.

“And that baby grew up as Evan Cole…”

Silence.

“Then who am I?”

Michael stopped crying.

When he answered, his voice was terrifyingly calm.

“You’re the reason Rebecca came back.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Why?”

“Because if you’re really the man calling himself Evan Cole…”

A pause.

“…then the baby switch failed.”

I stood.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Margaret’s real son somehow ended up back with her.”

My heart slammed against my ribs.

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

“But someone does.”

“Who?”

Michael whispered one name.

“Marlene.”

Everyone turned.

Claire’s mother went completely white.

I lowered the phone.

“Marlene?”

She stared at me.

Then at Claire.

Finally, she closed her eyes.

“I hoped Michael would never remember that.”

Claire stepped toward her mother.

“Remember what?”

Marlene began crying.

“The night you were born wasn’t the first time I met Rebecca.”

Silence.

“I knew her when Evan was born.”

I stared at her.

“You were there?”

“Not inside the house.”

“Then where?”

“In the car.”

My skin prickled.

“Whose car?”

“Rebecca’s.”

“Why?”

Marlene looked directly at me.

“Because I was the person she ordered to take Margaret’s baby away.”

Claire whispered:

“Mom…”

I could barely form the words.

“Did you?”

Marlene cried.

“No.”

“What did you do?”

She covered her mouth.

“I switched you back.”

Everything stopped.

The entire nightmare suddenly rearranged itself.

Richard had saved the wrong baby.

Rebecca thought Margaret’s real son was being taken away.

But Marlene—

Marlene had reversed it.

“You returned me to Mom.”

She nodded.

“And Rebecca’s baby?”

Marlene looked toward the suitcase.

“I took him.”

“Where?”

She began sobbing.

“I gave him to someone who couldn’t have children.”

“Who?”

Marlene hesitated.

Then said:

“Daniel Mercer.”

Daniel Jr. staggered backward.

“No.”

Marlene looked at him.

“I’m sorry.”

His face collapsed.

“You gave me to my father?”

“Daniel isn’t your biological father.”

Daniel Jr. stared at her.

“Then Rebecca…”

Marlene nodded.

“Rebecca is your biological mother.”

Daniel Jr. sank into a chair.

And suddenly the final pieces began locking together.

We weren’t twins.

We had never been twins.

We were two babies caught in the same crime.

I was Margaret and Michael’s son.

Daniel Jr. was Rebecca’s son, raised by Daniel Mercer.

And somewhere in the confusion was still one missing child.

Nathan.

Mom’s actual second baby.

My real twin.

I looked at Marlene.

“You switched me back.”

“Yes.”

“Then what happened to Nathan?”

Her crying stopped.

That terrified me.

“Marlene.”

She looked toward Claire.

Then toward me.

“I didn’t know his name was Nathan.”

My chest tightened.

“But you know where he went.”

She nodded.

“Where?”

She pointed upstairs.

For one horrifying second, I thought she meant Luca.

Then she said:

“The man sleeping in the guest room.”

Claire stared at her mother.

“What man?”

Marlene whispered:

“The one Elias brought here tonight.”

Elias stood abruptly.

“I didn’t bring anyone.”

Everyone froze.

Marlene’s face changed.

“What?”

“I came alone.”

From upstairs came the sound of a floorboard creaking.

Claire looked toward the ceiling.

Luca was upstairs.

I ran.

Claire was directly behind me.

Police officers shouted.

We reached the hallway.

Luca’s bedroom door was open.

His bed was empty.

“LUCA!”

Claire screamed.

Then the guest-room door opened.

A man stepped into the hallway.

About my age.

Same height.

Same eyes.

Same face.

And in his arms—

My sleeping son.

Every officer raised a weapon.

“Put the child down!”

The stranger froze.

I couldn’t breathe.

It was like looking into a mirror that had aged differently.

He slowly lifted one hand.

“Don’t shoot.”

“Put my son down.”

“He fell asleep.”

“PUT HIM DOWN.”

The man carefully placed Luca on the carpet.

Claire rushed forward and grabbed our son.

I couldn’t stop staring at the stranger.

“Who are you?”

His eyes filled.

He looked at my face.

Then whispered:

“My name is Nathan.”

My knees nearly gave out.

My twin.

Alive.

Standing ten feet away.

But before I could speak, Nathan looked downstairs toward Marlene.

His expression hardened.

“I didn’t come here to meet you, Evan.”

“Then why are you here?”

He reached into his pocket.

An officer shouted for him to stop.

Nathan slowly removed a folded photograph and dropped it onto the floor.

I picked it up.

Rebecca.

Samuel.

Marlene.

And my father Richard.

All standing together.

The photograph was dated three days after our birth.

I looked at Nathan.

“What is this?”

He stared directly at me.

“Proof that Marlene hasn’t told you the most important part.”

Claire tightened her arms around Luca.

“What part?”

Nathan looked at her.

Then at me.

“The switches weren’t an accident.”

My chest tightened.

“Nobody said they were.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You still don’t understand.”

“Then explain it.”

Nathan pointed toward the photograph.

“Rebecca wasn’t deciding where the babies went.”

“Who was?”

He looked downstairs.

At Marlene.

Then said:

“She was.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Nathan continued.

“Your mother wasn’t Rebecca’s driver.”

He looked directly at Claire.

“She was her partner.”

PART 10 — MARLENE’S REAL ROLE

Claire did not move.

Neither did I.

Nathan’s words seemed to make the entire house colder.

“Your mother wasn’t Rebecca’s driver.”

He looked directly at Claire.

“She was her partner.”

Marlene stood at the bottom of the stairs.

Her face had lost all color.

Claire tightened her arms around Luca.

“Mom.”

Marlene opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

“Tell me he’s lying.”

She couldn’t.

That silence did more damage than any confession could have.

Claire looked at me.

Then back at her mother.

“Tell me.”

Marlene began crying.

“It wasn’t what you think.”

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“That’s exactly what people say when it was worse.”

An officer stepped between them.

“Everybody stays where they are.”

Nathan raised both hands.

“I’m not here to hurt anyone.”

“Then why were you upstairs with my son?”

I asked.

Nathan looked ashamed.

“I heard him crying.”

“You picked him up.”

“Yes.”

“You don’t touch my child.”

“I know.”

Claire’s voice was ice.

“Then stay away from him.”

Nathan nodded.

“I will.”

The officer guided him downstairs.

We followed.

Luca had fallen asleep again against Claire’s shoulder.

I watched her hold him.

Protective.

Terrified.

And suddenly I realized this story had moved past me.

For hours, Claire had stood beside me while my entire identity came apart.

Now hers was beginning to fracture too.

I walked beside her.

Not ahead.

Not behind.

Beside.

Marlene was sitting when we returned to the living room.

Elias stood near the table.

Daniel Jr. hadn’t moved.

Thomas had been taken back to the hospital for treatment.

Detective Alvarez remained by the doorway.

He looked at Marlene.

“I think it’s time you tell us exactly what happened.”

Marlene wiped her face.

“I was nineteen.”

Nathan shook his head.

“Don’t start by making yourself sound helpless.”

“I was helpless.”

“No.”

His voice sharpened.

“The babies were helpless.”

Marlene flinched.

Claire whispered:

“Nathan.”

He stopped.

She looked at him.

“I need to hear her.”

Nathan stepped back.

Marlene stared at her daughter.

“I met Rebecca when I was seventeen.”

“How?”

“She worked with a woman who helped girls hide pregnancies.”

“Private adoptions?”

“Sometimes.”

“And sometimes?”

Marlene looked down.

“Sometimes babies were placed without proper paperwork.”

“Sold.”

Marlene started crying.

“Yes.”

Claire closed her eyes.

I felt her hand find mine.

I held it.

“How did you become involved?”

Claire asked.

“My parents threw me out.”

“Why?”

Marlene looked toward Elias.

“Because I was pregnant.”

Claire glanced at the older man.

Her half brother.

Elias said nothing.

“Rebecca helped me,” Marlene continued.

“She gave me somewhere to stay.”

“And what did she want in return?”

“At first, nothing.”

Nathan laughed again.

“Rebecca never did anything for nothing.”

Marlene nodded slowly.

“I learned that later.”

“What happened to Elias?”

“I gave birth to him.”

“Where?”

“The same house.”

My grandmother’s house.

Claire looked sick.

“Grandpa Samuel’s house?”

Marlene nodded.

“Why there?”

“Rebecca used it.”

My stomach tightened.

“For deliveries?”

“Yes.”

“Did Samuel know?”

“Of course.”

Nathan said.

Marlene looked at him.

“Yes.”

Claire whispered:

“So Evan’s grandfather was letting women give birth there so Rebecca could move babies around.”

Marlene nodded.

Detective Alvarez was taking notes.

“How many?”

Marlene shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“You were involved.”

“Not then.”

Nathan stepped forward.

“When did you become involved?”

Marlene looked at Elias.

“After they took him.”

Elias finally spoke.

“Took me where?”

Marlene broke down.

“I don’t know.”

“You don’t know where your own son went?”

“I was told he died.”

Elias froze.

The pattern again.

Every secret in this family seemed built from the same lie.

Death.

Marlene continued.

“Rebecca told me you stopped breathing.”

Elias’s expression hardened.

“And you believed her.”

“I was nineteen.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“No.”

Marlene looked at him.

“I didn’t believe her.”

Everyone became silent.

“Then what did you do?”

Elias asked.

“I followed her.”

His face changed.

“Where?”

“To a couple’s house.”

“My adoptive parents.”

Elias whispered.

Marlene nodded.

“I watched Rebecca carry you inside.”

Elias stepped backward.

“Then you knew I was alive.”

“Yes.”

His face collapsed.

“For all these years?”

Marlene cried.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you come for me?”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“When you were two.”

Elias stared at her.

“Rebecca threatened me.”

“With what?”

“You.”

He laughed bitterly.

“That makes no sense.”

“She said if I disrupted the adoption, she’d make sure you disappeared for real.”

Elias stopped laughing.

Nobody spoke.

Marlene continued.

“She knew people. Records disappeared. Birth certificates changed. Babies became other people’s children.”

Detective Alvarez looked up.

“Why didn’t you go to police?”

“I was terrified.”

Nathan said:

“And then you joined her.”

Claire looked at Marlene.

“Did you?”

Marlene’s shoulders collapsed.

“Yes.”

That word broke something in Claire.

She walked away from me.

Not far.

Just enough to breathe.

Luca stirred.

She kissed his hair.

Then turned back.

“What did you do?”

“I helped with paperwork.”

“What paperwork?”

“Birth records.”

“False records.”

“Yes.”

“How many children?”

“I don’t know.”

“Stop saying you don’t know!”

Claire’s voice cracked.

Luca woke and began crying.

Immediately, Claire softened.

“It’s okay, baby.”

I reached for him.

She handed him to me without looking.

I held our son.

Claire stepped toward her mother.

“How many?”

Marlene whispered:

“Maybe seventeen.”

Nobody moved.

Seventeen children.

Seventeen families.

Seventeen lives rewritten.

Detective Alvarez’s expression changed completely.

This was no longer simply a family mystery.

It was a case.

A real one.

“Names?”

he asked.

“Some.”

“Records?”

“Rebecca kept most of them.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

Nathan interrupted.

“The suitcase.”

Marlene looked at him.

“That’s only part.”

“Where’s the rest?”

Silence.

Nathan stepped closer.

“Where?”

“Samuel kept copies.”

“At the old house?”

“No.”

“Then where?”

Marlene looked toward me.

“With Richard.”

My stomach dropped.

“Dad has the records?”

“Not exactly.”

“Then what?”

“Richard knows where they are.”

I immediately called him.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Detective Alvarez contacted officers at the old house.

Then his expression changed.

“What?”

I asked.

He looked at me.

“Your father isn’t there anymore.”

“Where did he go?”

“Nobody knows.”

My chest tightened.

Nathan suddenly laughed.

“Of course.”

“What?”

“He heard enough tonight.”

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

“If Richard knows the records can prove what happened, he’s going to get them first.”

“To destroy them?”

Nathan shook his head.

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because Richard has spent his entire life protecting one person.”

“Mom?”

“No.”

“Grandpa?”

“No.”

Nathan looked toward Marlene.

“Rebecca.”

I stared at him.

“Why would Dad protect Rebecca?”

Marlene began shaking.

Nathan saw it.

“You know.”

Claire turned toward her mother.

“Know what?”

Marlene whispered:

“Richard and Rebecca were connected long before Margaret.”

My stomach tightened.

“How?”

Marlene stared at her hands.

“Rebecca helped Samuel hide something about Richard’s birth.”

Everything went quiet.

I almost laughed from disbelief.

“Another birth secret?”

Marlene nodded.

“Richard wasn’t Samuel’s biological son.”

My head snapped toward her.

Mom had lived with Richard for decades.

Had she known?

“Who was his father?”

Marlene looked at Daniel Jr.

Then at me.

“I don’t know.”

Nathan spoke.

“I do.”

We all turned.

He reached into his jacket again.

This time he removed an old envelope.

Detective Alvarez took it first.

Checked it.

Then handed it to me.

Across the front:

RICHARD COLE — PATERNITY

Inside was an old lab report.

The father’s name had been blacked out.

But underneath was a handwritten note.

Rebecca knows. Payment made. Richard must remain Samuel’s heir.

I looked at Nathan.

“Where did you get this?”

“Rebecca.”

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

“Why were you in contact with her?”

Nathan’s face changed.

Because apparently he had secrets too.

“Because I worked for her.”

Claire stared at him.

“What?”

“For how long?”

“Seven years.”

I stepped forward.

“You worked for the woman who helped steal you?”

“I didn’t know who she was at first.”

“And when you found out?”

“I stayed.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted evidence.”

Marlene shook her head.

“No.”

Nathan looked at her.

“What?”

“That’s not why you stayed.”

His jaw tightened.

“Don’t.”

Claire whispered:

“What does she mean?”

Marlene looked at Nathan.

“You were helping her locate the children.”

Nathan said nothing.

My stomach dropped.

“Why?”

He finally answered.

“Because Rebecca told me one of them was dangerous.”

“Which one?”

“She wouldn’t say.”

“Then what were you supposed to do?”

“Find everyone born through the operation.”

“And report back.”

“Yes.”

“Did you?”

Nathan looked ashamed.

“At first.”

“How many?”

“Nine.”

Detective Alvarez immediately stepped forward.

“I need those names.”

“I’ll give you everything.”

Marlene laughed through tears.

“You think that makes you innocent?”

Nathan looked at her.

“No.”

That answer surprised everyone.

“I’m not innocent.”

He looked at me.

“But I stopped helping when I discovered what Rebecca was actually doing.”

“What?”

“She wasn’t trying to find one dangerous child.”

“Then why find them?”

“To destroy evidence.”

I looked toward the suitcase.

“People are evidence.”

“Exactly.”

Claire went pale.

“You mean she was hurting them?”

Nathan’s voice dropped.

“Some disappeared.”

Nobody moved.

Detective Alvarez’s expression hardened.

“How many?”

“At least three.”

Marlene covered her mouth.

Claire whispered:

“Oh God.”

Nathan continued.

“That’s when I started copying everything.”

“Where are the copies?”

“Safe.”

“Where?”

“I’ll tell police.”

“Tell them now.”

He gave Alvarez an address.

Then I asked:

“Why come here tonight?”

“Because Rebecca contacted me.”

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

“What did she want?”

“One last name.”

“Whose?”

Nathan stared at me.

“Yours.”

My skin prickled.

“She already knew my name.”

“Not your name.”

He looked toward Luca.

“Your son’s.”

Every part of me changed.

I handed Luca to Claire.

“Why?”

Nathan raised both hands.

“I don’t know.”

“Why does Rebecca want my son?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then why were you holding him upstairs?”

His face broke.

“Because I was checking something.”

“What?”

“His shoulder.”

Claire stepped backward.

“You touched him?”

“I only looked.”

“For what?”

Nathan reached toward his own collar.

He pulled it aside.

Near his shoulder was a strange birthmark.

Small.

Crescent-shaped.

I had the same mark.

My mother used to joke that it was our family’s moon.

Nathan pointed toward me.

“You have one.”

“Yes.”

“Does Luca?”

I looked at Claire.

She stared at me.

Then slowly nodded.

“Yes.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

“Then Rebecca was right.”

I grabbed his shirt.

Officers moved instantly.

“Right about what?”

“Evan!”

Claire shouted.

I released him.

Nathan straightened his shirt.

Then whispered:

“That mark isn’t genetic.”

“What?”

“It’s not a birthmark.”

My stomach dropped.

“What is it?”

“A scar.”

Claire’s face changed.

“No.”

Nathan continued.

“Rebecca marked certain babies.”

“Why?”

“So she could identify them later.”

I felt sick.

“Identify them for what?”

Nathan looked at Marlene.

She was crying again.

“Tell them.”

Marlene shook her head.

“Tell them!”

Nathan shouted.

Claire stared at her mother.

“What did Rebecca mark the babies for?”

Marlene whispered:

“Samuel’s experiment.”

Nobody understood.

“What experiment?”

I asked.

Marlene covered her face.

“Samuel funded a doctor.”

“What kind of doctor?”

“Genetics.”

My stomach tightened.

Claire whispered:

“What did they do?”

“Blood tests.”

“That’s not an experiment.”

“More than blood tests.”

Nathan interrupted.

“They tracked families.”

“Why?”

“To see which traits passed through generations.”

I frowned.

“Why would Samuel care?”

“Because he was obsessed with inheritance.”

Money.

Legacy.

Bloodline.

Everything always returned to those things.

Nathan continued.

“Samuel didn’t just want to know who his children were.”

“What did he want?”

“To decide which children were worth keeping in the family.”

The room became silent.

Claire looked disgusted.

“That’s insane.”

“Yes.”

“Did Rebecca believe this?”

“She believed Samuel would make her rich.”

“Who was marked?”

Nathan looked at me.

“Children tied directly to Samuel’s bloodline.”

My stomach dropped.

“But you just said Richard wasn’t Samuel’s biological son.”

“Exactly.”

I froze.

“Then the marked children weren’t Richard’s line.”

“No.”

“Thomas?”

“Possibly.”

“Daniel Sr.?”

“Possibly.”

“Michael?”

Nathan shook his head.

“No.”

“Then why am I marked?”

He stared at me.

“That’s the question Rebecca wants answered.”

I felt cold.

“If Michael is my father, I shouldn’t be part of Samuel’s bloodline.”

“Correct.”

“So either the DNA report is wrong…”

“Or Michael was related to Samuel.”

Everyone became silent.

I remembered the photograph.

Samuel and Rebecca.

A baby.

Daniel.

I looked at Daniel Jr.

“Rebecca’s family was connected to Samuel.”

Nathan nodded.

“Much more than anyone knows.”

Then Detective Alvarez’s phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

His expression changed.

“Where?”

He walked away.

We watched him.

When he returned, he looked directly at me.

“We found Richard.”

“Where?”

“At a storage facility.”

“Is he okay?”

“He’s alive.”

“Why was he there?”

“He opened a unit registered under Rebecca Hale.”

My heart started pounding.

“What was inside?”

Alvarez glanced at Claire.

Then at Luca.

“We need to speak privately.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“Whatever this is, we’ve already heard worse.”

He hesitated.

Then:

“The unit contains boxes of medical records.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

“The originals.”

Alvarez nodded.

“And photographs.”

“Of the children?”

“Yes.”

“Anything about me?”

The detective looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“There is an entire file labeled Evan Cole.”

My mouth went dry.

“What does it say?”

“We haven’t reviewed everything.”

“Give me something.”

Alvarez hesitated.

“Your file wasn’t closed.”

“What does that mean?”

“It contains recent entries.”

“How recent?”

He looked toward Luca.

“Last week.”

Claire pulled our son closer.

“What entry?”

The detective read from a photograph on his phone.

Subject E stable. Marriage produced male child. Marker present. Continue observation.

Claire whispered:

“They’ve been watching us.”

I felt rage move through me.

“Who?”

“We don’t know.”

Then Alvarez swiped to another photograph.

His expression changed.

“What?”

I asked.

He looked at Marlene.

“This one’s about you.”

She went pale.

“What does it say?”

He read:

Marlene remains cooperative.

Claire stopped breathing.

I looked at Marlene.

“Cooperative?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Nathan stepped toward her.

“You told me you stopped.”

“I did.”

Alvarez continued reading.

Weekly updates received through August 2026.

Today was August 30, 2026.

Claire’s face collapsed.

“Mom.”

Marlene started sobbing.

“Claire, please.”

“You’ve been reporting on us?”

“No.”

“The file says you have.”

“I didn’t have a choice.”

“You always have a choice!”

Claire screamed.

Luca began crying.

I took him while Claire faced her mother.

“What did you tell Rebecca?”

Marlene couldn’t answer.

“What did you tell her about my husband?”

“Everything.”

Claire stumbled backward.

“What about Luca?”

Marlene covered her mouth.

“Everything.”

I felt something inside me turn cold.

His birth.

His medical information.

His routines.

Our address.

His birthmark.

Everything.

I looked at the woman who had been trusted alone with my child.

“Why?”

Marlene whispered:

“Because Rebecca said if I stopped…”

Her voice broke.

“What?”

“She would tell Claire what I did the night she was born.”

Claire stared at her.

“We already know Thomas might be my father.”

Marlene shook her head.

“That’s not it.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

He knew.

“Tell her,” he said.

Marlene whispered:

“I switched you too.”

Claire didn’t move.

“What?”

“I didn’t leave the house with the baby I gave birth to.”

The room went completely silent.

I looked at Claire.

She looked at her mother.

“No.”

Marlene cried.

“I’m sorry.”

“You’re saying I’m not your daughter?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire’s knees weakened.

I caught her.

“How can you not know?”

“Because Rebecca switched your bracelet.”

Claire’s breathing became shallow.

“With whose?”

Marlene looked toward Elias.

He stared back at her.

Then slowly shook his head.

“No.”

Marlene whispered:

“His adoptive mother’s baby.”

Nobody understood.

“What?”

Elias asked.

Marlene cried harder.

“The woman who adopted you was pregnant too.”

Elias froze.

“She lost her baby.”

“No.”

“Rebecca told her the baby died.”

Elias’s face emptied.

“But the baby didn’t die.”

Marlene shook her head.

“What happened to her?”

She looked at Claire.

And everything stopped.

Claire whispered:

“No.”

Marlene nodded.

“The baby Rebecca brought back…”

Her voice broke.

“…was you.”

Claire clung to me.

“So you’re not my mother.”

“I raised you.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Marlene couldn’t answer.

Claire began crying.

“Who is my biological mother?”

Marlene looked at Elias.

“His adoptive mother.”

Elias stared at Claire.

Then at me.

His own adopted parents had apparently lost a daughter who hadn’t died.

And that daughter was standing in front of him.

Claire.

That would make Elias and Claire not biological siblings.

Thomas might not be Claire’s father.

Everything shifted again.

Nathan whispered:

“Rebecca switched four babies.”

I looked at him.

“How many children were actually involved that night?”

He answered:

“Five.”

Silence.

“Five?”

“Yes.”

“And nobody has accounted for the fifth.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who was the fifth?”

Before Nathan could answer, Detective Alvarez’s phone buzzed.

He read something.

Then looked at me.

“We may have found that answer.”

“What?”

“Richard opened another container in Rebecca’s storage unit.”

“What was inside?”

“One birth certificate.”

“For who?”

The detective stared at Claire.

Then at me.

“Male child.”

“Name?”

“No name.”

“Mother?”

He hesitated.

“Rebecca Hale.”

Daniel Jr. stepped forward.

“My mother.”

“Apparently.”

“And father?”

Detective Alvarez went silent.

“Who?”

He looked directly at Richard’s location information on his screen.

Then said:

“Richard Cole.”

Daniel Jr. stopped breathing.

I stared at him.

That meant the man standing across the room wasn’t simply Rebecca’s son.

He was Richard’s son.

My father’s biological child.

The child Richard never knew he had.

And then my phone rang.

My father.

I answered.

“Dad?”

Richard was crying.

“Evan.”

“What happened?”

“I found the file.”

“I know.”

“No.”

His voice trembled.

“You don’t.”

“What file?”

“My son’s.”

I looked at Daniel Jr.

“Daniel is here.”

Richard stopped breathing.

“What?”

“Daniel Jr. is standing in front of me.”

Silence.

Then Richard whispered:

“That’s not my son.”

My blood went cold.

“What?”

“The birth certificate is fake.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Rebecca and I never had a child.”

“Then why would she create it?”

Richard began breathing faster.

“To hide the identity of the fifth baby.”

“Who was the fifth baby?”

Richard said:

“I know now.”

The room went silent.

“Who?”

Dad whispered:

“It was a girl.”

Claire went completely still.

“What girl?”

Richard started crying.

“Margaret’s.”

My heart stopped.

“Mom gave birth to two boys.”

“No.”

“Everyone said—”

“Everyone was wrong.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“How many children did Mom give birth to?”

Richard whispered:

“Three.”

Claire covered her mouth.

I couldn’t speak.

“Triplets?”

“Yes.”

“Two boys and a girl?”

“Yes.”

“What happened to her?”

Richard cried harder.

“Rebecca took her.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“What’s her name?”

“Margaret had chosen one.”

“What?”

“Anna.”

Nathan stepped backward.

Marlene looked terrified.

Daniel Jr. stared at the floor.

And Claire—

Claire stopped breathing.

I looked at her.

“What?”

She was staring at her mother.

“Marlene.”

Marlene shook her head.

“Don’t.”

Claire’s face became white.

“My middle name.”

I already knew it.

Claire Anna Bennett.

Claire whispered:

“Why did you give me the middle name Anna?”

Marlene began sobbing.

Claire stepped toward her.

“Why?”

Marlene whispered:

“Because Rebecca told me that was the name your birth mother wanted.”

Nobody moved.

Claire looked at me.

I looked at her.

No.

It couldn’t be.

If Claire was Margaret’s missing daughter—

If I was Margaret’s son—

Then Claire and I—

My stomach turned.

Marlene screamed:

“No! Evan, listen to me. That’s not what happened.”

Claire began shaking violently.

“Are we related?”

Marlene shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“ARE WE RELATED?”

“I DON’T KNOW!”

The room exploded into voices.

Detective Alvarez ordered everyone to stop.

Claire grabbed Luca.

I couldn’t move.

My wife.

The mother of my child.

Potentially my sister.

Then Nathan stepped forward.

“You’re not.”

Everyone turned.

He looked at Claire.

“You are not Margaret’s daughter.”

“How do you know?”

Nathan reached into his pocket.

Another document.

A DNA report.

“I tested you.”

Claire stared at him.

“What?”

“Three months ago.”

“How?”

“Your coffee cup.”

I stepped toward him.

“You need to stop stealing people’s DNA.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because Rebecca believed Claire was Anna.”

“And?”

“I needed to know.”

He handed the report to Alvarez.

The detective read it.

Then looked at us.

“Claire and Evan are not biological siblings.”

I nearly collapsed.

Claire started sobbing.

I held her.

For several seconds, nothing else mattered.

Then I asked:

“Who is Claire?”

Nathan looked at Marlene.

“Tell them.”

Marlene shook her head.

Nathan continued:

“Claire is the daughter of the woman who adopted Elias.”

Elias nodded slowly.

“And her biological father?”

Marlene whispered:

“Samuel.”

Silence.

My grandfather.

Claire stared at her.

“What?”

“Samuel had an affair with Elias’s adoptive mother.”

Claire stepped backward.

That meant Claire was Samuel’s daughter.

My mother’s half sister.

Not my sister.

My aunt.

The room went silent as everyone understood.

Claire looked at me.

Then at Luca.

Her face broke.

Nathan immediately said:

“Evan isn’t Samuel’s biological descendant.”

“How do you know?”

I asked.

“Because Michael isn’t Samuel’s son.”

“Then the mark?”

“Rebecca marked you by mistake.”

I closed my eyes.

A mistake.

One tiny scar had caused decades of surveillance.

Then Detective Alvarez’s phone rang again.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What now?”

I asked.

He looked directly at Nathan.

“We found Rebecca.”

Nathan went rigid.

“Where?”

“At the cabin Daniel Jr. gave us.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Daniel Sr.?”

Alvarez’s expression darkened.

“Also alive.”

My heart pounded.

“Can they talk?”

“Rebecca can.”

I immediately said:

“I want to speak with her.”

Alvarez shook his head.

“Not yet.”

“Detective—”

“There’s a reason.”

“What?”

“Rebecca wasn’t alone.”

My stomach dropped.

“Who else was there?”

The detective hesitated.

“A woman.”

“Who?”

“We don’t know.”

“Age?”

“Approximately thirty-four.”

Everything stopped.

My missing triplet sister.

Anna.

Claire whispered:

“No.”

I looked at Alvarez.

“Did Rebecca identify her?”

He nodded.

“What did she say?”

The detective looked at me.

Then at Nathan.

And finally at Marlene.

“Rebecca said the woman is Margaret Cole’s daughter.”

My eyes filled.

“Anna.”

Alvarez shook his head.

“No.”

My stomach dropped.

“What do you mean no?”

“She says Anna died as an infant.”

Mom’s missing daughter was dead.

“Then who is the woman?”

Alvarez looked down at his notes.

“Rebecca claims there never was a third Cole child.”

“But Dad found the file.”

“Rebecca says Richard misunderstood it.”

“What does she say the fifth baby was?”

The detective’s voice became quieter.

“Yours.”

I froze.

“Mine?”

“She claims two infants were both recorded under versions of your identity.”

I couldn’t breathe.

Nathan looked at me.

Then at the detective.

“Two Evans?”

Alvarez nodded.

“According to Rebecca.”

“Why?”

“One was Margaret’s biological son.”

“And the other?”

The detective paused.

“An infant brought in from another family.”

My stomach turned.

“Which one am I?”

“We don’t know.”

Then he delivered the final piece.

“The woman found with Rebecca has spent her entire life believing her name is…”

He checked the report.

“Evelyn Cole.”

I stared at him.

“Evelyn?”

Nathan whispered:

“Evan.”

Evelyn.

Almost the same name.

Two identities built from one record.

A male infant.

A female infant.

One life kept.

One life hidden.

My phone buzzed.

A photograph from Detective Alvarez’s team.

The woman from the cabin.

I opened it.

And my heart stopped.

She had my eyes.

My mother’s mouth.

And around her neck—

The missing half of Thomas’s silver pendant.

Claire whispered:

“Oh my God.”

Then a message appeared beneath the photograph.

She is asking for Evan.

A second message
