His mother has been gone eleven years."},"content":{"rendered":"<article id=\"post-8177\" class=\"hitmag-single post-8177 post type-post status-publish format-standard hentry category-drama-story\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<article id=\"post-14118\" class=\"hitmag-single post-14118 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail hentry category-amazing-story\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>PART 4: THE SIGNATURE MY SON COULDN\u2019T EXPLAIN<br \/>\nThe elevator doors closed.<br \/>\nFor several seconds, none of us moved.<br \/>\nThen my son\u2019s bride turned toward him.<br \/>\n\u201cTell me she was lying.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe was lying.\u201d<br \/>\nBut he answered too quickly.<br \/>\nHis bride noticed.<br \/>\nSo did I.<br \/>\nI held up the document bearing his dead mother\u2019s signature.<br \/>\n\u201cDid you have anything to do with this?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cLook at me.\u201d<br \/>\nHe looked at the floor.<br \/>\nThe walnut box sat open on the bed between us.<br \/>\nHis mother\u2019s pearls rested beside the forged trust document.<br \/>\nHis unopened letter remained beneath them.<br \/>\n\u201cYou knew about the trust,\u201d I said.<br \/>\n\u201cI didn\u2019t.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cCarol said you forged this.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cCarol says whatever protects Carol.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat still isn\u2019t an answer.\u201d<br \/>\nMy son finally looked at me.<br \/>\n\u201cI did not take Mom\u2019s money.\u201d<br \/>\nHis bride stepped back.<br \/>\n\u201cNo one asked if you took it.\u201d<br \/>\nHe swallowed.<br \/>\nThe DJ quietly carried the cassette deck into the suite and locked the door behind him.<br \/>\n\u201cI called hotel security,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re checking the exits.\u201d<br \/>\nMy son walked to the window.<br \/>\nBelow us, the hotel parking lot glowed beneath yellow lights.<br \/>\nCarol\u2019s car was still parked near the ballroom entrance.<br \/>\n\u201cShe didn\u2019t drive away,\u201d he said.<br \/>\n\u201cShe could have taken a taxi,\u201d the bride replied.<br \/>\n\u201cOr she could still be in the hotel,\u201d I said.<br \/>\nThe bride picked up the telephone and called the front desk.<br \/>\nShe gave them Carol\u2019s description and asked that security stop her if they saw her.<br \/>\nWhen she hung up, she looked at her new husband.<br \/>\n\u201cNow tell us why you look terrified.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI just watched the woman who raised me after my mother died accuse me of stealing four hundred thousand dollars.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe didn\u2019t raise you,\u201d I said.<br \/>\nThe words came out harsher than I intended.<br \/>\nMy son turned.<br \/>\n\u201cYou worked twelve-hour shifts after Mom died. Carol made dinner. Carol came to my school meetings. Carol sat in the passenger seat when I learned to drive.\u201d<br \/>\nPain moved across his face.<br \/>\n\u201cAnd every time I asked why Mom\u2019s photographs were disappearing, you told me to stop upsetting her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could not defend myself.<br \/>\nHe was right.<br \/>\nI had been so grateful to Carol for filling the empty spaces that I never questioned what she removed to make room for herself.<br \/>\nHis bride sat beside the walnut box.<br \/>\n\u201cYou should read your mother\u2019s letter.\u201d<br \/>\nMy son looked at the envelope.<br \/>\nHis name was written across the front in the handwriting he had not seen since he was sixteen.<br \/>\nHis fingers trembled as he picked it up.<br \/>\nHe opened it carefully, as if the paper might break.<br \/>\nThe first line made him cover his mouth.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d I asked.<br \/>\nHe handed it to his bride because he could not speak.<br \/>\nShe read aloud.<br \/>\n\u201cMy sweet boy, if this letter has reached you on your wedding day, then you are older now than I was when I first held you.\u201d<br \/>\nMy son lowered his head.<br \/>\n\u201cI wish I could tell you that being your mother made me wise. Mostly, it made me afraid. I was afraid I would fail you, afraid I would embarrass you, and now I am afraid you will remember only the days when I was sick.\u201d<br \/>\nHe wiped his cheeks.<br \/>\n\u201cPlease remember the good days too. Remember pancakes shaped like animals. Remember the summer you tried to build a swimming pool with a garden hose and a tarp. Remember that I laughed more than I cried.\u201d<br \/>\nThe bride stopped to steady her voice.<br \/>\nThen she continued.<br \/>\n\u201cThe house is not meant to make you rich. It is meant to make sure no one can ever tell you that you do not belong somewhere. Sell it if you want. Keep it if you want. But whatever comes from it belongs to you.\u201d<br \/>\nMy son looked toward me.<br \/>\nI felt ashamed even though I had not known.<br \/>\n\u201cCarol understands the trust,\u201d the letter continued. \u201cI have asked her to protect it until you are old enough to protect yourself. I believe she will keep her word.\u201d<br \/>\nMy son closed his eyes.<br \/>\n\u201cIf anything is unclear, contact Mr. Edward Hale. His card is beneath this letter. He prepared every document, and he has certified copies of everything.\u201d<br \/>\nThe bride searched the box.<br \/>\nBeneath the envelope was a faded business card.<br \/>\nEDWARD HALE, ATTORNEY AT LAW.<br \/>\nA telephone number was written on the back in my wife\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>It was almost midnight.<br \/>\nI called anyway.<br \/>\nAn elderly man answered on the fifth ring.<br \/>\n\u201cEdward Hale speaking.\u201d<br \/>\nI told him my name.<br \/>\nFor several seconds, he said nothing.<br \/>\nThen he asked, \u201cIs your son married?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cTonight.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAnd did he receive the walnut box?\u201d<br \/>\nI looked at Carol\u2019s suitcase.<br \/>\n\u201cNot from the person who was supposed to give it to him.\u201d<br \/>\nMr. Hale sighed.<br \/>\n\u201cI was afraid of that.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou knew about the box?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI put the trust papers inside it myself.\u201d<br \/>\nI told him about the sale of the house.<br \/>\nI told him about the termination document.<br \/>\nWhen I read him the date beside my dead wife\u2019s signature, his voice changed.<br \/>\n\u201cThat document is fraudulent.\u201d<br \/>\nMy son gripped the back of a chair.<br \/>\nMr. Hale continued.<br \/>\n\u201cYour wife\u2019s trust became permanent at the moment of her death. She could not amend or terminate it afterward. No legitimate bank would accept her signature three years after she died.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cSomeone did.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen someone also presented false identification or bribed an employee.\u201d<br \/>\nThe bride leaned closer to the telephone.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat signatures were actually required to release the money?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cCarol\u2019s signature as trustee,\u201d he said. \u201cThe father\u2019s signature surrendering his right to live in the property, and the son\u2019s signature consenting to an early distribution.\u201d<br \/>\nI felt cold.<br \/>\n\u201cI signed papers when the house was sold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you read them?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\nCarol had placed little yellow tabs beside every line.<br \/>\nShe told me where to sign.<br \/>\nI had trusted her.<br \/>\nMr. Hale asked, \u201cWas your son over eighteen at the time?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHe was nineteen.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen the bank would have required him to appear in person.\u201d<br \/>\nMy son walked away from the telephone.<br \/>\nHis bride watched him.<br \/>\n\u201cDid you go to a bank with Carol when you were nineteen?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\nThe answer came too fast again.<br \/>\nMr. Hale heard it.<br \/>\n\u201cSon,\u201d he said through the speaker, \u201cthis is not the time to protect anyone. If the funds were released, the bank copied your identification.\u201d<br \/>\nMy son rubbed both hands over his face.<br \/>\n\u201cI don\u2019t remember.\u201d<br \/>\nHis bride stood.<br \/>\n\u201cYou don\u2019t remember going to a bank where someone gave away your mother\u2019s house?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI signed a lot of college papers that year.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDid Carol help you with them?\u201d<br \/>\nHe did not answer.<br \/>\nMr. Hale said he still had the trust\u2019s file at his home.<br \/>\nHe asked us to meet him at eight the next morning.<br \/>\n\u201cBring the box, every document inside it, and the cassette,\u201d he said. \u201cDo not let Carol touch any of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>The call ended.<br \/>\nA knock came at the door.<br \/>\nTwo hotel security officers stood outside with the wedding planner.<br \/>\n\u201cWe found the woman you described on a hallway camera,\u201d one officer said. \u201cShe left through the kitchen exit six minutes ago.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWas she alone?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cA dark vehicle picked her up.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDid you see the driver?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe license plate was covered.\u201d<br \/>\nThe officer handed the bride a printed image from the security camera.<br \/>\nCarol was climbing into the passenger seat.<br \/>\nThe driver\u2019s face could not be seen.<br \/>\nBut someone was sitting in the back.<br \/>\nA man.<br \/>\nHe was holding another walnut box.<br \/>\nIt looked exactly like the one on the bed.<br \/>\nMy son took the photograph.<br \/>\n\u201cThere are two boxes?\u201d<br \/>\nBefore I could answer, his phone vibrated.<br \/>\nA message from Carol appeared on the screen.<br \/>\nDO NOT GO TO EDWARD HALE.<br \/>\nA second message arrived.<br \/>\nIF YOU TELL YOUR FATHER WHAT HAPPENED AT THE BANK, I WILL TELL YOUR WIFE EVERYTHING.<br \/>\nThe bride read it over his shoulder.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat happened at the bank?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNothing.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cCarol thinks it was something.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe is trying to frighten us.\u201d<br \/>\nA third message appeared.<br \/>\nIt was a photograph.<br \/>\nMy son was standing at a bank counter.<br \/>\nHe looked nineteen.<br \/>\nCarol stood beside him.<br \/>\nA document lay beneath his hand.<br \/>\nThe date printed in the corner matched the date on the forged trust release.<\/p>\n<p>His bride slowly lowered the phone.<br \/>\n\u201cYou said you didn\u2019t remember.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI didn\u2019t.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou were standing beside Carol.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI told you, she helped with my college paperwork.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAt a bank?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI don\u2019t know!\u201d<br \/>\nHis voice cracked.<br \/>\nThe DJ moved toward the door.<br \/>\n\u201cI think I should go.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo,\u201d my son said. \u201cPlease stay. You are the only person here who isn\u2019t part of this family.\u201d<br \/>\nThe DJ remained beside the door.<br \/>\nAnother message arrived.<br \/>\nThis one contained an audio file.<br \/>\nMy son tried to delete it.<br \/>\nHis bride took the phone from him.<br \/>\nShe pressed PLAY.<br \/>\nCarol\u2019s voice came through the speaker.<br \/>\n\u201cYou can keep pretending you don\u2019t remember, but the bank had cameras. I kept a copy before the footage disappeared. Tell your father the truth, or I will.\u201d<br \/>\nThe recording ended.<br \/>\nMy son sank onto the edge of the bed.<br \/>\nHis bride stood in front of him.<br \/>\n\u201cWe have been married for five hours,\u201d she said. \u201cDo not make our first night the first time you lie to me.\u201d<br \/>\nHe stared at his mother\u2019s pearls.<br \/>\nThen he looked at the cassette deck.<br \/>\n\u201cI went to the bank with Carol.\u201d<br \/>\nMy chest tightened.<br \/>\n\u201cWhy?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe said there was a problem with the house.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat problem?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe said Mom had made a mistake in the trust.\u201d<br \/>\nMr. Hale had said no legitimate bank would accept a dead woman\u2019s signature.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>I looked at the forged document again.<br \/>\n\u201cDid Carol ask you to sign this?\u201d<br \/>\nMy son began crying.<br \/>\n\u201cShe told me it was only a correction.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou signed your mother\u2019s name?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe put Mom\u2019s old trust papers in front of me. She told me to copy the signature exactly.\u201d<br \/>\nHis bride removed her wedding ring.<br \/>\nShe did not take it off completely.<br \/>\nShe only twisted it around her finger while she tried to breathe.<br \/>\n\u201cYou forged your dead mother\u2019s signature?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI was nineteen.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou knew she was dead.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI knew.\u201d<br \/>\nI could barely hear my own voice.<br \/>\n\u201cWhy would you do that?\u201d<br \/>\nMy son looked at me with the same frightened eyes he had the night his mother died.<br \/>\n\u201cBecause Carol told me the house had already been sold illegally.\u201d<br \/>\nI shook my head.<br \/>\n\u201cThat doesn\u2019t explain why you helped her.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe said the police were coming for you.\u201d<br \/>\nThe room went silent.<br \/>\nMy son stood and faced me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarol said you had stolen Mom\u2019s trust money.
