But I know my son. If he chose you, then you must be patient, because that boy once spent three weeks choosing a toaster.”
This time, my son laughed.
It came out as half a sob.
His bride reached for his hand.
My wife’s voice softened.
“There are things you should know about him. There will be days when love feels easy. There will also be days when one of you sleeps facing the wall because neither of you wants to apologize first. On those days, remember these hands. They are not your enemy.”
The bride squeezed his fingers.
My son’s lips trembled.
Behind them, the wedding planner had lowered her clipboard.
She was crying too.
My wife paused on the tape.

I could hear the old kitchen clock ticking behind her.
Then she said, “Now, everyone else in that room, give them some space. This last dance belongs to the woman who will walk beside my son when I cannot.”
The DJ slowly raised the music.
It was an old instrumental song my wife used to play on Sunday mornings.
When our son was little, she would put his feet on top of hers and dance him across the kitchen.
He recognized it before I did.
His knees nearly gave out.
His bride caught him.
Then he wrapped both arms around her, buried his face against her shoulder, and they began to move.
No one took out a phone.
No one spoke.
Two hundred people simply watched a grown man dance with his new wife while his dead mother’s favorite song played around them.
I felt someone reach for my hand.
It was my second wife.
For one foolish second, I thought she finally understood.
Then her fingers tightened around my wrist.
“Turn it off,” she whispered.
I looked at her.
Her face had lost all its color.
“She has had her moment,” she said. “Don’t let this go any further.”
I pulled my hand away.
“You knew there was more?”
Her eyes flicked toward my breast pocket, where the cassette case had been.
She did not answer.
On the dance floor, my son’s bride was whispering to him.
He was crying openly now.
I had seen him break his arm at twelve without shedding a tear.
I had watched him stand beside his mother’s grave at sixteen with his jaw locked so tightly I thought his teeth might crack.
But now, in his wife’s arms, eleven years of grief finally came out.
The song faded.

My wife’s voice returned.
“If my picture is sitting somewhere in that room, thank you.
