I simply know people. Carol has been my friend for fourteen years. She sat beside me through every doctor\u2019s appointment. She brought soup when I couldn\u2019t eat and drove my son to practice when I couldn\u2019t stand.\u201d<br \/>\nMy son slowly turned toward Carol.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cYou knew my mother?\u201d<br \/>\nCarol stared at the carpet.<br \/>\nI had never told him how close they had once been.<br \/>\nAfter my wife died, Carol stopped visiting for nearly a year.<br \/>\nThen one rainy afternoon, she appeared on our porch carrying a casserole.<br \/>\nShe said she was worried about us.<br \/>\nTwo years later, I married her.<br \/>\nMy wife continued on the tape.<br \/>\n\u201cCarol loves both of you. You promised to give it to them before their wedding.\u201d<br \/>\nMy son\u2019s eyes narrowed.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat box?\u201d<br \/>\nCarol said nothing.<br \/>\nI remembered it immediately.<br \/>\nMy wife\u2019s father had made her a small walnut box when she was twelve.<br \/>\nA single rose was carved into the lid.<br \/>\nShe kept old photographs and important papers inside it.<br \/>\nAfter her funeral, I searched the bedroom for it.<br \/>\nCarol told me my wife had probably given it away.<br \/>\n\u201cYou said it was gone,\u201d I whispered.<br \/>\nCarol wiped her cheeks.<br \/>\n\u201cIt should have been.\u201d<br \/>\nThe DJ looked toward the door.<br \/>\nHe clearly wanted to disappear, but he also seemed afraid to leave us alone.<br \/>\nOn the tape, my wife took a slow breath.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cInside the box are my wedding pearls. They are not expensive, but they belonged to my mother. I want my son\u2019s wife to have them.\u201d<br \/>\nThe bride touched her bare neck.<br \/>\n\u201cThere is also a letter for my son,\u201d my wife continued. \u201cHe should read it when he is ready.\u201d<br \/>\nMy son took one step toward Carol.<br \/>\n\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAnd finally,\u201d the tape said, \u201cthere are documents concerning the house.\u201d<br \/>\nCarol suddenly grabbed the cassette deck.<br \/>\nThe DJ caught it before it hit the floor.<br \/>\nThe tape stretched from the machine.<br \/>\nFor one horrifying second, I thought she had destroyed my wife\u2019s final message.<br \/>\n\u201cDon\u2019t touch it!\u201d my son shouted.<br \/>\nThe DJ carefully stopped the machine.<br \/>\n\u201cThe tape is okay,\u201d he said. \u201cBut nobody touches this deck again.\u201d<br \/>\nCarol\u2019s breathing had become fast and shallow.<br \/>\nThe bride stood between her and the DJ.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat house was she talking about?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe old house,\u201d I said.<br \/>\nThe house where my son was born.<br \/>\nThe house where my wife died.<br \/>\nThe house I sold three years after marrying Carol.<br \/>\nI had used the money from that sale to pay off our debts and make the down payment on our current home.<br \/>\nAt least, that was what Carol had told me.<br \/>\nMy son stared at me.<br \/>\n\u201cYou sold Mom\u2019s house?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI thought it was mine.\u201d<br \/>\nCarol laughed once.<br \/>\nIt was a sharp, desperate sound.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lived there for twenty-three years. Of course you thought it was yours.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<br \/>\nShe looked at the damaged length of tape hanging from the deck.<br \/>\n\u201cIt means your first wife never trusted you as much as you thought she did.\u201d<br \/>\nMy son stepped toward her.<br \/>\n\u201cDo not speak about my mother like that.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI took care of her when your father couldn\u2019t even look at her without falling apart,\u201d Carol snapped. \u201cI cleaned her. I fed her. I listened to her plan everyone\u2019s future as if we were pieces on a board.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAnd then you married her husband,\u201d the bride said quietly.<br \/>\nCarol looked at her.<br \/>\n\u201cShe wanted me to.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe wanted you to deliver that box too.\u201d<br \/>\nCarol went silent.<br \/>\nThe DJ repaired the loose tape with hands steadier than mine.<br \/>\nHe inserted the cassette again.<br \/>\n\u201cIf she grabs it one more time, I\u2019m taking this equipment and leaving,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nI nodded.<br \/>\nThe bride pressed PLAY.<br \/>\nMy wife\u2019s voice returned in the middle of a sentence.<br \/>\n\u201c\u2026came from my parents, and the deed has always been in my name. Six months ago, I placed the house into a trust for our son.\u201d<br \/>\nMy knees weakened.<br \/>\nI sat down.<br \/>\n\u201cThe trust allows my husband to live there for the rest of his life,\u201d she continued. \u201cIf he chooses to sell it, the proceeds must remain in the trust. I chose her because she understands money, and because I believed she would protect my son even after I was gone.\u201d<br \/>\nMy son looked as if Carol had struck him.<br \/>\n\u201cYou controlled the trust?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIt wasn\u2019t like that.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou had my mother\u2019s house?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI managed some paperwork.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cFor eleven years?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou were a child when she died.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m twenty-seven!\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou weren\u2019t ready.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou didn\u2019t even tell me!\u201d<br \/>\nCarol looked at me for help.<br \/>\nFor fifteen years, I had defended her.<br \/>\nWhen my son complained that his mother\u2019s photographs were disappearing, I said Carol needed time.<br \/>\nWhen Carol donated my wife\u2019s clothes without asking, I said she was trying to help.<br \/>\nWhen she removed my wife\u2019s name from the family Christmas cards, I said we needed to move forward.<br \/>\nEvery time my son tried to protect his mother\u2019s place in our home, I had told him to keep the peace.<br \/>\nNow I understood what that peace had cost him.<br \/>\n\u201cWhere is the money?\u201d I asked.<br \/>\nCarol crossed her arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafe.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat isn\u2019t an answer.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI invested it.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIn what?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cOur future.\u201d<br \/>\nMy son shook his head.<br \/>\n\u201cThat was my future.\u201d<br \/>\nCarol pointed at him.<br \/>\n\u201cYou would have wasted it. Your mother made you think love means handing someone everything they want. I made that money grow.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen show us the account.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI don\u2019t have access here.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShow us on your phone.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI said I don\u2019t have access.\u201d<br \/>\nThe bride studied Carol for several seconds.<br \/>\nThen she said, \u201cThe box is here, isn\u2019t it?\u201d<br \/>\nCarol\u2019s expression changed.<br \/>\nThat was all the answer we needed.<br \/>\n\u201cWhere?\u201d I demanded.<br \/>\nShe said nothing.<br \/>\nThe bride walked toward Carol\u2019s chair.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>A black leather purse rested beneath it.<br \/>\nCarol rushed forward.<br \/>\nMy son blocked her.<br \/>\nThe bride opened the purse.<br \/>\nThere was no walnut box inside.<br \/>\nBut there was a small brass key attached to a paper tag.<br \/>\nThe tag had two words written on it.<br \/>\nBRIDAL SUITE.<br \/>\nThe bride looked at Carol.<br \/>\n\u201cYou went into our room?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI was leaving you a gift.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat gift?\u201d<br \/>\nCarol did not answer.<br \/>\nMy son, his bride, and I hurried upstairs.<br \/>\nCarol followed, begging us to stop.<br \/>\nThe DJ came too, carrying the cassette deck beneath one arm.<br \/>\nAt the end of the hotel corridor, the bride unlocked the suite.<br \/>\nNothing appeared disturbed.<br \/>\nThe wedding dress hung beside the window.<br \/>\nFlowers covered the dresser.<br \/>\nThen my son pointed toward the bed.<br \/>\nA black suitcase sat underneath it.<br \/>\nIt belonged to Carol.<br \/>\nI pulled it out.<br \/>\nThe walnut box was inside.<\/p>\n<p>My son knelt beside it.<br \/>\nHis fingers traced the rose carved into the lid.<br \/>\n\u201cI remember this,\u201d he whispered. \u201cMom kept my first lost tooth in here.\u201d<br \/>\nCarol stood in the doorway.<br \/>\n\u201cI was going to give it to you.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhen?\u201d he asked. \u201cAfter you removed everything that mattered?\u201d<br \/>\nI opened the box.<br \/>\nA strand of yellowed pearls rested on top.<br \/>\nBeneath them was an envelope with my son\u2019s name written in his mother\u2019s handwriting.<br \/>\nThe bride lifted out a thick stack of legal papers.<br \/>\nAt the bottom lay a bank statement.<br \/>\nMy son read the number aloud.<br \/>\n\u201cThree hundred eighteen thousand, four hundred forty dollars.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat was the original deposit,\u201d Carol said quickly. \u201cIt changed after investments.\u201d<br \/>\nThe next statement showed the balance growing to more than four hundred thousand dollars.<br \/>\nThen the statements stopped.<br \/>\nThe bride searched the box again.<br \/>\nShe found one final document folded beneath the lining.<br \/>\nIt was titled TERMINATION OF TRUST AND RELEASE OF FUNDS.<br \/>\nAccording to the document, the trust had been closed eight years earlier.<br \/>\nEvery dollar had been withdrawn.<\/p>\n<p>My son stared at Carol.<br \/>\n\u201cWhere did it go?\u201d<br \/>\nCarol looked at me.<br \/>\nThe release form said the money had been transferred to an account in my name.<br \/>\n\u201cI never received this,\u201d I said.<br \/>\nCarol pointed toward the bottom of the page.<br \/>\n\u201cYour signature is right there.\u201d<br \/>\nI looked down.<br \/>\nThe signature was not mine.<br \/>\nIt belonged to my first wife.<br \/>\nFor a moment, I could not understand what I was seeing.<br \/>\nThen I noticed the date beside it.<br \/>\nThe document had been signed three years after we buried her.<br \/>\nMy son\u2019s bride whispered, \u201cSomeone forged a dead woman\u2019s signature.\u201d<br \/>\nCarol backed into the hallway.<br \/>\nMy son held up the paper.<br \/>\n\u201cDid you do this?\u201d<br \/>\nShe shook her head.<br \/>\nBut before any of us could stop her, she turned and ran.<br \/>\nThe elevator doors opened at the end of the hall.<br \/>\nCarol rushed inside.<br \/>\nAs the doors began closing, she looked directly at me.<br \/>\n\u201cI didn\u2019t forge it,\u201d she shouted. \u201cYour son did.\u201d<br \/>\nThen the elevator doors closed\u2026.<\/p>\n<h1 class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=4868\">Click Here to continue read next: PART4: My son got married Saturday.
