That\u2019s the worst part of what you\u2019ve done to him.\u201d<br \/>\nGrant\u2019s face twisted.<br \/>\n\u201cYou don\u2019t know what he\u2019ll do.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI know exactly what he\u2019ll do. He\u2019ll blame himself for not seeing what you became.\u201d<br \/>\nGrant seized Harold\u2019s shoulder.<br \/>\n\u201cDo it.\u201d<br \/>\nHarold looked toward Vanessa.<br \/>\nShe was standing beside the kitchen door, crying.<br \/>\n\u201cDon\u2019t look at me,\u201d she said. \u201cThis was Grant\u2019s plan.\u201d<br \/>\nGrant pointed at the scattered pills.<br \/>\n\u201cYou changed her prescription.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cYou told me it would only make her confused!\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAnd now she knows everything.\u201d<br \/>\nMom tried to crawl toward the telephone.<br \/>\nGrant pulled it from the wall.<br \/>\nHarold looked down at the syringe.<br \/>\n\u201cI can\u2019t do this.\u201d<br \/>\nGrant leaned close to him.<br \/>\n\u201cThen I\u2019ll tell everyone you\u2019re my father. I\u2019ll tell your wife. I\u2019ll tell Dad. I\u2019ll tell the police you helped us forge every document.\u201d<br \/>\nHarold closed his eyes.<br \/>\nThen he pushed the needle into Mom\u2019s arm.<br \/>\nDad turned away from the screen.<br \/>\nI could not.<br \/>\nMom\u2019s body became still.<br \/>\nHarold checked her pulse.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat did you give her?\u201d Vanessa asked.<br \/>\n\u201cSomething that will look like heart failure.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIs she dead?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNot yet.\u201d<br \/>\nMom\u2019s lips moved.<br \/>\nShe was trying to say my name.<br \/>\nHarold gathered the vial and syringe.<br \/>\n\u201cWait five minutes. Then call 911.\u201d<br \/>\nVanessa stared at him.<br \/>\n\u201cShe\u2019s still breathing.\u201d<br \/>\nHarold closed his medical bag.<br \/>\n\u201cIf the ambulance arrives now, she might tell them what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked directly toward the hidden camera.<br \/>\nHer eyes were open.<br \/>\nShe was conscious.<br \/>\nGrant stepped in front of her, blocking the camera\u2019s view.<br \/>\nFor the next five minutes, we could hear Mom struggling to breathe.<br \/>\nNobody helped her.<br \/>\nNobody called me.<br \/>\nNobody called Dad.<br \/>\nWhen Vanessa finally dialed 911, Mom was no longer moving.<br \/>\nThe video ended.<br \/>\nSilence filled the evidence room.<br \/>\nSheriff Mercer pressed the stop button.<br \/>\nDad stood with his back to us.<br \/>\nHis shoulders shook.<br \/>\n\u201cI left her alone,\u201d he whispered.<br \/>\n\u201cYou didn\u2019t know,\u201d I said.<br \/>\n\u201cI should have.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHarold lied to you. Grant and Vanessa planned this.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI was her husband.\u201d<br \/>\nHe turned toward me.<br \/>\n\u201cI was supposed to protect her.\u201d<br \/>\nI walked across the room and held him.<br \/>\n\u201cYou loved her. They used that love against you.\u201d<br \/>\nSheriff Mercer quietly left to speak with the district attorney.<br \/>\nWhen she returned, two deputies followed her.<br \/>\n\u201cHarold Pike is being arrested for murder,\u201d she said. \u201cGrant and Vanessa Cole are being charged as participants in the same crime. We\u2019re also adding conspiracy, financial exploitation, forgery, evidence tampering, and burglary charges.\u201d<br \/>\nDad looked through the observation window at Harold.<br \/>\n\u201cI want him to see the video.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHis attorney will receive a copy.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo. I want him to watch Eleanor looking at him while he did it.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>Sheriff Mercer hesitated.<br \/>\nThen she returned to the interview room.<br \/>\nHarold\u2019s attorney protested when she placed the laptop on the table.<br \/>\nHarold watched anyway.<br \/>\nHe did not speak while the recording played.<br \/>\nBut when Mom said, \u201cFrank trusts you,\u201d his face collapsed.<br \/>\nBy the time the video showed the syringe, Harold was sobbing.<br \/>\n\u201cI didn\u2019t want to kill her,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nHis attorney told him to stop talking.<br \/>\nHarold ignored him.<br \/>\n\u201cGrant forced me.\u201d<br \/>\nSheriff Mercer leaned forward.<br \/>\n\u201cGrant was not holding the syringe.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHe would have exposed everything.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cSo you murdered Eleanor to protect your reputation.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI spent my entire life building that business.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAnd Eleanor lost her life protecting her family.\u201d<br \/>\nHarold covered his face.<br \/>\nSheriff Mercer stopped the recording.<br \/>\n\u201cWhy did Vanessa call Natalie this morning and say Frank had died?\u201d<br \/>\nHarold\u2019s hands dropped.<br \/>\nHe suddenly looked terrified.<br \/>\n\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou do know.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI wasn\u2019t involved.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYour burner phone sent Grant a message at 5:58 this morning. It said, \u2018Frank is handled. Begin.\u2019\u201d<br \/>\nDad stared through the glass.<br \/>\nHarold had called him at five that morning and pretended to warn him.<br \/>\nLess than one hour later, Harold had told Grant that Dad was dead.<br \/>\nSheriff Mercer placed a photograph of the message in front of him.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat did you mean by \u2018Frank is handled\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold said nothing.<br \/>\n\u201cYou knew Frank was alive. You had just spoken to him.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI needed Grant to believe the plan was working.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat plan?\u201d<br \/>\nHarold glanced at his attorney.<br \/>\nThe attorney shook his head.<br \/>\nSheriff Mercer stood.<br \/>\n\u201cWe have enough to charge you for Eleanor\u2019s murder. If Frank was another intended victim, remaining silent will not protect you.\u201d<br \/>\nHarold looked toward the dark observation window.<br \/>\n\u201cI was supposed to take Frank fishing.\u201d<br \/>\nDad stiffened.<br \/>\n\u201cWhen?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cLast night.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhere?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe old cabin near Millstone Lake.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat were you supposed to do there?\u201d<br \/>\nHarold began shaking.<br \/>\n\u201cGrant gave me medication. He said I should put it in Frank\u2019s coffee.\u201d<br \/>\nDad\u2019s face went pale.<br \/>\n\u201cAnd then?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI was supposed to call the funeral home and report that Frank had died in his sleep.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe same way you covered up Eleanor\u2019s murder.\u201d<br \/>\nHarold nodded.<br \/>\n\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you do it?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cFrank wasn\u2019t home. When I went to pick him up, his suitcase was gone.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cSo you called him.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI needed to find out where he was. He told me he was safe but refused to say where.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen why did you tell Grant that Frank was dead?\u201d<br \/>\nHarold lowered his voice.<br \/>\n\u201cI thought if Grant believed it was done, he would search the house and lead me to Eleanor\u2019s remaining evidence.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou were trying to protect yourself.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAnd when Vanessa called Natalie, she genuinely believed her father was dead.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYes.\u201d<br \/>\nDad gripped the observation-room table.<br \/>\nVanessa had not simply invented his death to hurt me.<br \/>\nShe believed Harold had murdered him.<br \/>\nAnd she had laughed.<br \/>\nSheriff Mercer continued.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat was supposed to happen after Frank died?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cGrant and Vanessa would use the old will. They thought it was still valid.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThey would claim the house and empty his accounts.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYes.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat about Natalie?\u201d<br \/>\nHarold\u2019s eyes moved toward the observation window again.<br \/>\n\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<br \/>\nSheriff Mercer placed both hands on the table.<br \/>\n\u201cYou broke into her house.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI needed the music box.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou drove eleven hours to retrieve it.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYes.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDid Grant tell you to hurt Natalie?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDid Vanessa?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen why did investigators find two disposable phones in your truck?\u201d<br \/>\nHarold\u2019s lips tightened.<br \/>\n\u201cOne was mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAnd the other?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhy did it contain photographs of Natalie leaving work, buying groceries, and entering her house?\u201d<br \/>\nDad pushed away from the window.<br \/>\n\u201cHe was watching her.\u201d<br \/>\nSheriff Mercer placed another photograph in front of Harold.<br \/>\nIt showed a printed map of my neighborhood.<br \/>\nSeveral places had been circled.<br \/>\nMy office.<br \/>\nMy grocery store.<br \/>\nMy house.<br \/>\nAnd the bridge I crossed every morning on my way to work.<br \/>\n\u201cYou weren\u2019t only looking for the music box,\u201d the sheriff said.<br \/>\nHarold stopped answering.<br \/>\nSheriff Mercer ended the interview.<br \/>\nShe ordered deputies to search Harold\u2019s truck, home, fishing cabin, and former funeral business.<br \/>\nGrant and Vanessa were formally arrested for Mom\u2019s murder before noon.<br \/>\nWhen Grant was shown the video, he blamed Harold.<br \/>\nWhen investigators showed him the DNA report, he stared at it for almost a minute.<br \/>\nThen he said, \u201cFrank can never see that.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHe already has,\u201d the detective told him.<br \/>\nGrant covered his face.<br \/>\nBut he did not ask whether Dad was all right.<br \/>\nHe asked whether Dad had changed the will.<br \/>\nVanessa lasted longer.<br \/>\nShe denied everything until detectives played the recording of Mom begging her to call an ambulance.<br \/>\nThen she began to cry.<br \/>\n\u201cI wanted to call,\u201d she said.<br \/>\n\u201cYou waited twenty-three minutes.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cGrant wouldn\u2019t let me.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe kitchen door was beside you.
