Tell them an intruder is inside her home and may be destroying evidence connected to a suspicious death.\u201d<br \/>\nAs she spoke, Harold reached my bedroom.<br \/>\nHe opened the closet and immediately pulled down the cardboard box containing the blue music box.<br \/>\nHe knew exactly where to look.<br \/>\n\u201cHe\u2019s been inside my house before,\u201d I said.<br \/>\nDad shook his head.<br \/>\n\u201cNo. That\u2019s impossible.\u201d<br \/>\nHarold placed the music box on my bed.<br \/>\nThe faded blue paint was visible through the camera.<br \/>\nMom had given it to me when I was seven.<br \/>\nA tiny ballerina danced whenever the lid opened.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>I had not touched it since the package arrived three years earlier.<br \/>\nHarold opened the lid.<br \/>\nThe music began playing.<br \/>\nFor one second, his expression softened.<br \/>\nThen he tore the ballerina from its base.<br \/>\n\u201cStop him!\u201d Dad shouted at the screen.<br \/>\nHarold pulled a screwdriver from his coat and began prying apart the bottom of the box.<br \/>\nI pressed the microphone button on my security app.<br \/>\n\u201cHarold.\u201d<br \/>\nHe froze.<br \/>\nSlowly, he looked toward the camera.<br \/>\n\u201cYou\u2019re being recorded,\u201d I said. \u201cThe police are coming.\u201d<br \/>\nHe stared at the camera without speaking.<br \/>\nDad leaned close to my phone.<br \/>\n\u201cWhy are you doing this?\u201d<br \/>\nHarold\u2019s eyes narrowed.<br \/>\n\u201cYou should have stayed dead until I finished.\u201d<br \/>\nDad recoiled as if Harold had struck him.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou heard me.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou called me this morning and warned me about Vanessa.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI warned you because I needed to know where you were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad went silent.<br \/>\nHarold looked down at the music box again.<br \/>\nHe drove the screwdriver beneath the wooden base and twisted.<br \/>\nThe bottom cracked open.<br \/>\nA small brass key fell onto the bed.<br \/>\nBeside it was a folded piece of paper.<br \/>\nHarold grabbed both.<br \/>\n\u201cPut them down,\u201d I ordered.<br \/>\nHe slipped the key and note into his coat.<br \/>\nThen he stepped toward the camera.<br \/>\n\u201cYour mother caused all of this,\u201d he said. \u201cShe should have kept quiet.\u201d<br \/>\nDad\u2019s face twisted with rage.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat did you do to Eleanor?\u201d<br \/>\nHarold reached up and ripped the camera from the wall.<br \/>\nThe screen went black.<br \/>\nI could still hear him moving.<br \/>\nThen the audio cut out too.<br \/>\nSheriff Mercer\u2019s radio erupted.<br \/>\n\u201cLocal units are four minutes away.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHe could be gone in four minutes,\u201d I said.<br \/>\nI opened another camera.<br \/>\nThe backyard appeared.<br \/>\nA third camera showed the driveway.<br \/>\nHarold\u2019s black pickup was parked behind my house with its engine running.<br \/>\n\u201cHe\u2019s leaving through the back,\u201d I said.<br \/>\nDad reached for his phone.<br \/>\n\u201cWho are you calling?\u201d the sheriff asked.<br \/>\n\u201cMy neighbor.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDo not ask a civilian to confront him.\u201d<br \/>\nDad ignored her warning.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>A man answered on the second ring.<br \/>\n\u201cFrank?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cMr. Cole?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHarold is inside Natalie\u2019s house. Lock your doors and watch the alley. Do not approach him.\u201d<br \/>\nMy neighbor moved to his front window.<br \/>\n\u201cI see his truck.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cPolice are coming.\u201d<br \/>\nA moment later, Harold appeared on the backyard camera.<br \/>\nHe carried the blue music box beneath one arm.<br \/>\nAs he reached the gate, sirens became audible through my phone.<br \/>\nHarold stopped.<br \/>\nHe looked toward the street.<br \/>\nThen he threw the music box into a trash bin and ran in the opposite direction.<br \/>\n\u201cHe has the key in his coat!\u201d I shouted, even though the officers could not hear me.<br \/>\nHarold climbed over my fence and disappeared into the neighboring yard.<br \/>\nThe first police car pulled into my driveway.<br \/>\nTwo officers ran around the house.<br \/>\nAnother cruiser blocked the alley.<br \/>\nFor ninety unbearable seconds, every camera showed nothing.<br \/>\nThen a voice came through Sheriff Mercer\u2019s radio.<br \/>\n\u201cSuspect located.\u201d<br \/>\nI closed my eyes.<br \/>\n\u201cIs he in custody?\u201d<br \/>\nThere was a struggle in the background.<br \/>\nAn officer shouted for Harold to show his hands.<br \/>\nHarold cursed.<\/p>\n<p>Then I heard metal handcuffs close.<br \/>\n\u201cSuspect in custody,\u201d the officer confirmed. \u201cWe recovered a brass key and a handwritten note from his coat.\u201d<br \/>\nDad sat down.<br \/>\nHis body seemed to collapse into itself.<br \/>\nHarold had stood beside him at his wedding.<br \/>\nHe had held me when I was a baby.<br \/>\nHe had carried Mom\u2019s casket.<br \/>\nAnd now he had broken into my home to destroy the last thing she had left me.<br \/>\nSheriff Mercer placed a hand on Dad\u2019s shoulder.<br \/>\n\u201cI need to ask you something. Did Harold have access to your financial records?\u201d<br \/>\nDad slowly nodded.<br \/>\n\u201cHe helped me prepare my taxes after Eleanor died.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDid he know Vanessa had power of attorney?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHe was the witness when I originally signed it.\u201d<br \/>\nThe sheriff removed the forged power of attorney from the evidence pile.<br \/>\nShe examined the signature at the bottom.<br \/>\nThen she turned the page toward us.<br \/>\nHarold Pike\u2019s name appeared beneath the words WITNESS AND NOTARY.<br \/>\nDad\u2019s lips parted.<br \/>\n\u201cHe helped her forge it.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHe did more than help,\u201d Sheriff Mercer said. \u201cWithout his notarization, Vanessa could not have submitted it to the bank.\u201d<br \/>\nShe stepped out to call the officers at my home.<br \/>\nWhile she was gone, Dad stared at Harold\u2019s signature.<br \/>\n\u201cMy best friend,\u201d he whispered.<br \/>\nI wanted to comfort him.<br \/>\nBut I was still hearing the recording of Mom begging for an ambulance.<br \/>\n\u201cWhy would Harold help them?\u201d<br \/>\nDad did not answer.<br \/>\nSheriff Mercer returned.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe note inside the music box contains three things: the name First County Bank, the number 317, and Natalie\u2019s full legal name.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cA safe-deposit box,\u201d Dad said.<br \/>\nThe sheriff nodded.<br \/>\n\u201cThe key recovered from Harold appears to be a bank-box key.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen Mom hid the original evidence there.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat\u2019s likely.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cCan we open it tonight?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe bank is closed. I\u2019ll place an officer there until morning. Harold will not get near that box.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat is he saying?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNothing. He asked for a lawyer.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat about Vanessa and Grant?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cGrant denies knowing Harold was going to your house. Vanessa claims Grant arranged everything.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThey are blaming each other,\u201d I said.<br \/>\n\u201cThey usually do when they realize the evidence is stronger than their loyalty.\u201d<br \/>\nSheriff Mercer opened Grant\u2019s phone, which had been seized during the traffic stop.<br \/>\nInvestigators had already found seventeen calls between Grant and Harold during the previous week.<br \/>\nThere were also bank transfers.<br \/>\nGrant had sent Harold five thousand dollars two days before the forged power of attorney was submitted.<br \/>\nThree years earlier, the morning after Mom died, he had sent Harold ten thousand dollars.<br \/>\nDad stared at the payment date.<br \/>\n\u201cHe paid Harold after Eleanor died.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWe need to find out what that payment purchased,\u201d the sheriff said.<br \/>\nThe following morning, Dad and I met Sheriff Mercer at First County Bank.<br \/>\nThe manager led us into a private room beneath the building.<br \/>\nBox 317 was registered jointly to Eleanor Cole and Natalie Cole.<br \/>\nI had never known it existed.<br \/>\nMom had added my name six months before she died.<br \/>\nThe manager inserted the bank\u2019s master key.<br \/>\nI used the brass key from the music box.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>The lock clicked.<br \/>\nSheriff Mercer pulled the long metal container from the wall and placed it on the table.<br \/>\nMy hands shook as I lifted the lid.<br \/>\nInside were copies of the private investigator\u2019s report.<br \/>\nThere were bank statements proving Grant and Vanessa had stolen more than sixty-one thousand dollars.<br \/>\nThere were photographs of Harold meeting them outside the bank.<br \/>\nThere was also a receipt from Harold\u2019s funeral home dated the morning after Mom died.<br \/>\nThe receipt showed a cash payment of ten thousand dollars.<br \/>\nBeside the amount, someone had written two words.<br \/>\nImmediate cremation.<br \/>\nDad sank into a chair.<br \/>\n\u201cHarold convinced me not to request an autopsy,\u201d he whispered. \u201cHe said Eleanor\u2019s heart condition made it unnecessary.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHe needed to prevent a toxicology test,\u201d Sheriff Mercer said.<br \/>\nI removed another envelope.<br \/>\nInside were the original pharmacy records for Mom\u2019s medication.<br \/>\nOne prescription had been changed four days before she died.<br \/>\nThe dosage was six times higher than what her doctor had ordered.<br \/>\nThe request had been submitted using Dad\u2019s name.<br \/>\nThe approving witness was Harold.<br \/>\n\u201cHe helped them change her medication,\u201d I said.<br \/>\nDad covered his face.<br \/>\nI continued searching.<br \/>\nBeneath the medical records was a letter addressed to both of us.<br \/>\nDad and I,<br \/>\nIf you are reading this, then Harold found the music box or something happened to me before I could tell you the truth.<br \/>\nHarold\u2019s chest pains are not real.<br \/>\nGrant paid him to get Dad out of the house while Vanessa and Grant confronted me.<br \/>\nThey believe I have only one recording.<br \/>\nI made three copies.<br \/>\nEverything you need to prove what they did is inside this box.<br \/>\nBut there is one truth I kept from this family for too long.<br \/>\nIt is the page.<br \/>\nThen he read it again.<br \/>\nHis entire body began trembling.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d I asked.<br \/>\nHe handed the report to me.<br \/>\nThe probability listed at the bottom was 99.98 percent.<br \/>\nI looked at the tested names.<br \/>\nThe first was Grant Cole.<br \/>\nThe second was Harold Pike.<br \/>\nBeside their names were two words that shattered
