I didn\u2019t even know it existed!\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou knew exactly what it was!\u201d Vanessa screamed.<br \/>\nDad and I looked at each other.<br \/>\nThe deputy\u2019s voice returned.<br \/>\n\u201cSheriff, we found jewelry, financial documents, prescription bottles, and approximately nine thousand dollars in cash inside the vehicle.\u201d<br \/>\nDad stood.<br \/>\n\u201cThe prescription bottles,\u201d he said. \u201cWhose name is on them?\u201d<br \/>\nThere was a pause.<br \/>\nThen the deputy answered.<br \/>\n\u201cEleanor Cole.\u201d<br \/>\nMom\u2019s name.<br \/>\nDad gripped the edge of the table.<br \/>\n\u201cThat\u2019s impossible.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhy?\u201d I asked.<br \/>\n\u201cYour mother\u2019s medication disappeared the night she died. The doctor signed the death certificate, and Vanessa said she had arrived only moments before calling 911.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBut now you don\u2019t believe her.\u201d<br \/>\nDad\u2019s voice broke.<br \/>\n\u201cI don\u2019t know what to believe.\u201d<br \/>\nWe reached the sheriff\u2019s office shortly after nine that night.<br \/>\nVanessa and Grant were being questioned in separate rooms.<br \/>\nSheriff Mercer met us in a small conference room.<br \/>\nThe red folder sat on the table inside a clear evidence bag.<br \/>\nBeside it were Mom\u2019s prescription bottles, several pieces of jewelry, a forged power of attorney, and the unsigned will Grant had removed from the safe.<br \/>\n\u201cWhy haven\u2019t you arrested them?\u201d Dad asked.<br \/>\n\u201cWe detained them for removing property from your house and for the suspected forged document,\u201d the sheriff explained. \u201cBut the contents of this folder may lead to much more serious charges.\u201d<br \/>\nShe put on gloves and removed the first document.<br \/>\nIt was a report from a private investigator.<br \/>\nThe date at the top was six days before Mom died.<br \/>\nDad read the name of the investigator aloud.<br \/>\n\u201cMichael Turner.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDo you know him?\u201d I asked.<br \/>\nDad shook his head.<br \/>\nSheriff Mercer turned the page.<br \/>\nThe report contained photographs of Vanessa meeting a man outside Dad\u2019s bank.<br \/>\nOther pictures showed Grant using Mom\u2019s credit card.<br \/>\nThere were copies of checks.<br \/>\nCash withdrawals.<br \/>\nAccount numbers.<br \/>\nAt the bottom of one page, Mom had written a note in blue ink.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>They have taken $61,400.
