That means I could do anything I wanted with it.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou weren\u2019t in your right mind.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI was examined by my doctor yesterday morning. He signed a statement confirming that I am perfectly capable of making my own decisions.\u201d<br \/>\nGrant began breathing heavily.<br \/>\nVanessa whispered something to him, but Dad heard it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>So did I.<br \/>\nShe said, \u201cAsk him who controls the trust.\u201d<br \/>\nGrant repeated the question.<br \/>\nDad looked directly at me.<br \/>\n\u201cMy trustee is the child I trust.\u201d<br \/>\nVanessa\u2019s voice cracked.<br \/>\n\u201cNatalie?\u201d<br \/>\nDad did not answer immediately.<br \/>\nHe picked up his coffee and took a slow sip.<br \/>\nThen he said, \u201cThe daughter who drove eleven hours through the night when I called and said I was in trouble.\u201d<br \/>\nMy chest tightened.<br \/>\nVanessa had no idea I had arrived at Dad\u2019s house two nights earlier.<br \/>\nShe did not know I had found him sitting alone in his dark living room with a suitcase beside his chair.<br \/>\nShe did not know he had discovered money missing from one of his accounts.<br \/>\nAnd she definitely did not know what we had done during the last forty-eight hours.<br \/>\n\u201cYou gave Natalie our house?\u201d Vanessa shouted.<br \/>\nDad\u2019s expression hardened.<br \/>\n\u201cYour house?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou know what I mean.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cI don\u2019t think I do.\u201d<br \/>\nGrant interrupted.<br \/>\n\u201cWe took care of you. We stayed close. Natalie abandoned you.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>Dad\u2019s hand tightened around his mug.<br \/>\n\u201cNatalie called me every Sunday for nine years. She paid my property taxes when my pension was delayed. She replaced the furnace you promised to repair. And when I had surgery, she took three weeks off work while the two of you visited for twenty minutes and complained about the hospital parking.\u201d<br \/>\nNeither of them spoke.<br \/>\nDad continued.<br \/>\n\u201cThe only time you started visiting regularly was after you learned how much the house was worth.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat\u2019s not true,\u201d Vanessa said.<br \/>\n\u201cI have cameras.\u201d<br \/>\nHer breath caught.<br \/>\nDad glanced toward the laptop sitting on my kitchen counter.<br \/>\nI had noticed it when he arrived, but I had not asked why he brought it.<br \/>\nNow I understood.<br \/>\n\u201cYou\u2019ve been watching us?\u201d Grant demanded.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019ve been watching my house.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThose cameras are illegal!\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThey are inside my own property.\u201d<br \/>\nVanessa\u2019s voice became soft.<br \/>\nToo soft.<br \/>\n\u201cDad, this is all a misunderstanding. Harold called and said you were dead.\u201d<br \/>\nDad leaned closer to the phone.<br \/>\n\u201cNo, he didn\u2019t.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYes, he did!\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHarold called me at five o\u2019clock this morning. He said you contacted his old funeral home and asked how quickly you could get copies of a death certificate.\u201d<br \/>\nVanessa stopped breathing.<br \/>\nDad continued.<br \/>\n\u201cYou told the receptionist that I had died at home. You gave her my full name, my date of birth, and my Social Security number.\u201d<br \/>\nGrant muttered something I could not hear.<br \/>\nThen the call abruptly ended.<br \/>\nDad stared at the silent phone.<br \/>\nI reached for it.<br \/>\n\u201cShould I call them back?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\nHe stood, carried his plate to the sink, and carefully washed his hands.<br \/>\nIt was such an ordinary thing to do that it frightened me.<br \/>\n\u201cDad, what is happening?\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>He dried his hands on a towel.<br \/>\n\u201cTwo days ago, my bank called about an attempted transfer of thirty-eight thousand dollars.\u201d<br \/>\nI felt the blood drain from my face.<br \/>\n\u201cWho tried to transfer it?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe request was submitted online using a power of attorney.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDo you have a power of attorney?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI did. Vanessa\u2019s name was on it.\u201d<br \/>\nI stared at him.<br \/>\nHe turned toward the window.<br \/>\n\u201cI revoked it three years ago after your mother died.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen how did she use it?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe changed the date.\u201d<br \/>\nI could barely speak.<br \/>\n\u201cShe forged it?\u201d<br \/>\nDad nodded.<br \/>\n\u201cThe bank noticed the signature did not match the one they had on file. They froze the request and called me.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you call the police?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI called you first.\u201d<br \/>\nThat explained the strange phone call I had received forty-eight hours earlier.<br \/>\nDad had not told me anything over the phone.<br \/>\nHe had only said, \u201cNatalie, I need you to come get me. Don\u2019t tell your sister.\u201d<br \/>\nI left work, packed one bag, and drove through the night.<br \/>\nWhen I arrived, Dad was waiting with his suitcase, a locked metal box, and a thick envelope filled with bank statements.<br \/>\nHe had looked smaller than I remembered.<br \/>\nOlder too.<br \/>\nBut his mind had been sharp.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat did we sign at the lawyer\u2019s office yesterday?\u201d I asked.<br \/>\n\u201cThe trust documents. Please call me so we can discuss this calmly as a family.\u201d<br \/>\nFrom the laptop speakers, we heard her lower the phone and curse.<br \/>\nGrant looked at her.<br \/>\n\u201cDid she answer?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen call again.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe knows.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe doesn\u2019t know everything.\u201d<br \/>\nDad and I looked at each other.<br \/>\nOn the screen, Grant walked toward the framed photograph of Mom hanging behind the desk.<br \/>\nHe lifted it from the wall.<br \/>\nA small safe was hidden behind it.<br \/>\nI had never known it was there.<br \/>\nApparently, Grant had.<br \/>\nHe entered four numbers.<br \/>\nThe safe opened.<br \/>\nDad\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cHow did he know the code?\u201d I whispered.<br \/>\nDad did not answer.<br \/>\nGrant removed a brown envelope and held it up triumphantly.<br \/>\n\u201cThe original will,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nVanessa snatched it from his hand and ripped it open.<br \/>\nFor several seconds, they silently read the pages.<br \/>\nThen Vanessa started smiling.<br \/>\n\u201cSee?\u201d she said. \u201cThe house, the truck, and the accounts. Everything goes to us.\u201d<br \/>\nGrant laughed.<br \/>\n\u201cThen we\u2019re fine. The new trust won\u2019t matter if we can prove Natalie pressured him.\u201d<br \/>\nDad shook his head.<br \/>\n\u201cThey\u2019re holding an unsigned draft from twelve years ago.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThey think it\u2019s real?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe final page clearly says it was never executed.\u201d<br \/>\nOn the screen, Vanessa flipped to the last page.<br \/>\nHer smile vanished.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat?\u201d Grant asked.<br \/>\n\u201cThere\u2019s no signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThen find the signed copy.\u201d<br \/>\nThey emptied the safe.<br \/>\nThere was no other will.<br \/>\nOnly old insurance policies, Mom\u2019s jewelry box, and a small red folder.<br \/>\nThe moment Dad saw the folder, he stood so quickly that his chair crashed onto the floor.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat is it?\u201d I asked.<br \/>\nHe moved closer to the laptop.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019ve never seen that folder before.\u201d<br \/>\nVanessa opened it.<br \/>\nHer face turned pale.<br \/>\nGrant looked over her shoulder.<br \/>\nFor the first time that morning, both of them appeared genuinely frightened.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d Grant whispered.<br \/>\nVanessa did not answer.<br \/>\nShe pulled out a document and read it twice.<br \/>\nThen she looked directly at the office camera.<br \/>\n\u201cShe knows,\u201d Vanessa said.<br \/>\n\u201cWho knows?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNatalie.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>My heart began pounding.<br \/>\nGrant grabbed the paper.<br \/>\nHis eyes moved across the page.<br \/>\nThen he stared at Vanessa in horror.<br \/>\n\u201cYou told me this was destroyed.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI thought it was.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIf Dad sees this, we\u2019re finished.\u201d<br \/>\nDad reached for his phone.<br \/>\nI grabbed his wrist.<br \/>\n\u201cWait.
