5 – I Thought the Hardest Part Was Getting Hope Out of the Landfill, Until I Realized How Much Her Story Still Had to Give

The letter stayed on my kitchen table for two days.

I read it several times, even though the words never changed.

Hope had been nominated for Miracle Pet of the Year.

The veterinary clinic wanted to recognize her recovery and share what she had overcome.

I kept looking at the name of the award.

Miracle.

I had never thought of Hope that way.

To me, she was the dog who followed me from room to room, slept at the foot of my bed, and waited for me to sit down before settling beside me.

She was the dog who had learned to trust me.

She was also the dog whose medical bills had forced me to sell my guitar and rethink almost every expense I made.

There had been difficult days.

There had been moments when I sat at my table, looked at the bills, and wondered how I was going to keep everything covered.

But I had never regretted bringing her home.

Not once.

I folded the letter and placed it in a drawer.

Then I took it out again the next morning.

I wanted to accept the nomination.

Not because I thought an award would make Hope more valuable.

She had been valuable before anyone knew her name.

I wanted people to hear what had happened to her because I knew how easily someone could overlook an animal in trouble.

I had nearly done it myself.

That was the part I couldn't forget.

I hadn't arrived at the landfill searching for a dog.

I hadn't planned to rescue anyone.

I had been annoyed about hauling away carpet, thinking about my own problems, and looking forward to getting home.

Then I saw something lying in the garbage.

I almost kept walking.

The memory made me uncomfortable, but I didn't want to hide it when I told her story.

It was important to admit that I hadn't known what I would do until I was standing there.

Hope didn't need me to be a perfect person.

She needed me to stop.

A few days later, I called the veterinary clinic.

I told them I was grateful for the nomination and would be happy to attend the ceremony.

The person on the phone sounded pleased.

We discussed the arrangements, and I wrote the date down where I wouldn't forget it.

After the call, I looked over at Hope.

She was lying on the floor with her head resting between her front paws.

Her golden fur had grown thick enough that it was hard to imagine how little of it she had possessed when I found her.

She looked up when I moved.

I smiled at her.

"Looks like we're going somewhere."

Her tail tapped the floor.

I took that as a good sign.

Over the next several days, I found myself thinking about what I would say at the ceremony.

I didn't want to prepare some grand speech.

I wasn't interested in making myself sound brave or turning the story into something it wasn't.

I wanted to talk about the dog.

I wanted people to picture the animal I had seen that morning and understand how far she had come.

But every time I tried to organize the story in my head, I returned to the same question.

Why had I stopped?

The answer wasn't complicated.

I had seen her tail move.

That was all.

I hadn't known whether she would survive.

I hadn't known how much her treatment would cost.

I hadn't known whether I was capable of caring for a dog in such terrible condition.

I had only known that she was alive and needed help.

Sometimes, I thought, people waited too long for certainty before deciding to do something good.

They wanted to know the outcome before they took the first step.

I had wanted that, too.

At the clinic, I had asked whether Hope would live.

The veterinarian couldn't promise me anything.

I had agreed to help her anyway.

I didn't know if I could afford every part of the journey, but I knew I couldn't leave her without trying.

That decision had changed both our lives.

One evening, I sat on the floor while Hope rested beside me.

I ran my fingers through the fur along her back.

She leaned closer.

I remembered how carefully she had taken the sandwich at the landfill.

I remembered being afraid to touch her because I didn't want to frighten her.

I remembered carrying her into the clinic and standing there with that filthy towel while the staff worked.

At the time, I had felt helpless.

Now I understood that I hadn't needed to know how to fix everything.

I had only needed to get her to people who could help and then keep showing up.

The veterinary team had done their part.

Hope had fought through the illness and weakness.

I had followed the instructions, paid the bills as best I could, and given her a place to recover.

None of it had happened because of one extraordinary act.

It had happened because of many ordinary ones.

I hoped that was what people would understand when they heard her story.

The day of the ceremony arrived sooner than I expected.

I got ready while Hope watched me from the doorway.

She seemed curious about the extra activity around the house.

I checked the time, gathered what I needed, and made sure we were ready to leave.

Then I looked at her.

There was something almost unbelievable about seeing her standing there, healthy and alert, waiting for me.

A year earlier, I hadn't known whether she would make it through the night.

Now I was preparing to take her to an event where people wanted to celebrate her survival.

I knelt beside her.

"Ready, girl?"

She wagged her tail.

I laughed.

For once, I didn't spend the entire morning worrying about what might go wrong.

I was simply glad we had made it this far.

<a
