Just tell me what you know."

He closed the folder halfway.

"I can tell you that we are not treating this as a simple joke."

The room seemed to become very quiet.

I heard a telephone ringing somewhere outside the office.

A printer started.

Someone walked past the door.

Ordinary bank noises.

But I barely noticed them.

"Why not?"

He held my gaze.

"Because there are details that require careful verification, and I don't want to give you incorrect information."

I sat back.

I was frightened now.

Not because I thought the money was real.

Because I had begun to understand that the answer might be more complicated than I had imagined.

I thought about calling Grandma again.

Then I stopped myself.

She had given me the check for a reason.

If she wanted me to discover that reason, I needed to let the bank finish what it was doing.

That was what I told myself, anyway.

The manager asked me to confirm the spelling of my name.

I did.

He checked my identification once more.

Then he asked me to sign a form acknowledging that I had presented the document for review.

I read it carefully before signing.

I wasn't going to make a mistake simply because I felt nervous.

When I finished, he took the form and added it to the folder.

"I appreciate your patience."

I nodded.

"How long will this take?"

"I can't promise an exact time."

I almost laughed.

I had spent the entire morning waiting for an answer to a question that should have been simple.

Either my grandmother had given me a worthless check, or she hadn't.

Yet every time I thought I was close to understanding, another question appeared.

The manager stepped out again.

This time, I heard him speak to someone in the hallway.

His voice was lower than before.

He mentioned a name.

I couldn't make out the rest.

Then the door opened, and he returned alone.

He looked different.

Not dramatically.

His tie was still straight.

His expression was still controlled.

But he had lost the look of someone who expected to explain a minor inconvenience and send a customer home.

He pulled his chair closer to the desk.

"Ms. Whitaker, I want to make sure you understand that presenting a check for verification doesn't mean you have agreed to deposit it or accept any particular terms."

I stared at him.

"All right."

"If the document is genuine, there may be additional steps before any funds can be released."

I felt my heart begin to beat faster.

"If?"

He paused.

"I'm explaining the process."

I looked at the folder.

"Have you confirmed anything?"

He folded his hands again.

"We have confirmed enough to require further attention."

That was all he would say.

I had no idea whether I should feel relieved or terrified.

I looked at my phone.

There were no new messages from Grandma.

There was one from my father.

It had arrived while I was sitting in the office.

I opened it.

Don't waste your morning chasing a stupid joke. Come to your senses.

I read it twice.

Then I locked the screen.

The manager had noticed my expression.

"Is everything all right?"

"My father thinks the check is fake."

The words sounded childish as soon as I said them.

I regretted bringing him into the conversation.

The manager didn't ask any questions about my family.

He simply nodded.

"I understand that people may have different expectations about a document like this."

I looked at him.

"Do you think I'm being foolish?"

"No."

He said it without hesitation.

I felt my throat tighten.

For the first time that morning, I allowed myself to consider the possibility that Grandma hadn't made a mistake.

She hadn't confused the numbers.

She hadn't forgotten what she was doing.

She had written my name on a check and handed it to me in front of the entire family.

Then she had told me to keep it.

Why?

I thought about her face at dinner.

She hadn't smiled when Marcus laughed.

She hadn't looked embarrassed when Brittany made her joke.

She hadn't even seemed surprised when my father dismissed the gift.

She had simply watched us.

Perhaps she had expected that reaction.

Perhaps she had known exactly how everyone would respond.

I couldn't understand why.

The manager returned to his computer and began typing.

I sat quietly, watching the screen from where I was seated.

I couldn't read anything on it.

He asked me to confirm the date the check had been given to me.

I told him.

He wrote it down.

Then he asked whether anyone else in the family had received a similar document.

"Everyone at dinner."

His fingers stopped moving.

"Everyone?"

"My father. My brother. My cousin. The others who were there."

"Did they receive checks for the same amount?"

"Yes."

He looked up.

"And they all came from your grandmother?"

"Yes."

For the first time, he seemed genuinely surprised.

He asked whether I knew if the checks had been issued together.

"I don't know."

I remembered the stack of envelopes beside Grandma's plate.

They had all looked alike.

Each had a name written in blue ink.

Each had contained a check.

I had assumed she had prepared them herself.

Now I wondered whether she had spent days arranging everything before Christmas.

The manager made another note.

He didn't explain why he had asked.

I wanted to demand an answer, but I could see that he was trying to be careful.

So I waited.

The morning seemed to stretch around me.

I watched the sunlight move across the narrow strip of floor beneath the window.

I thought about the bills waiting in my apartment.

The rent due the following week.

The second job I would have to report to that evening.

The groceries I had been planning to buy.

My life was so ordinary that five million dollars seemed impossible to fit inside it.

Even if the check was legitimate, I didn't know what I would do with that kind of money.

I didn't know whether I could trust it.

I didn't know whether my family would believe me.

I didn't know whether I wanted them to.

The manager finally closed the folder.

He looked at me for a long moment.

"I need to make one more call."

I nodded.

He picked up the telephone.

This time, he spoke with a level of formality I hadn't heard before.

He identified himself.

He provided information about the document.

Then he asked a series of questions and waited for the answers.

I couldn't hear the person on the other end.

But I could see the manager's face.

At first, he looked attentive.

Then he grew very still.

He glanced down at the check.

He listened again.

His eyebrows drew together.

He asked the person to repeat something.

Then he said, "I understand."

He listened for several more seconds before ending the call.

For a moment, he remained seated with the receiver in his hand.

I had never seen someone look so pale while sitting in a room that warm.

He set the telephone down carefully.

Then he looked at me.

I felt a cold sensation move through my stomach.

"What is it?"

He stood, walked to the door, and closed it completely.

That small action frightened me more than anything he had said.

He returned to his chair.

"Ms. Whitaker, I think we need to have a more detailed conversation."

I gripped the arms of my chair.

"About the check?"

"Yes."

He took a slow breath.

"And about what happens next."

I thought of my father telling me to come to my senses.

I thought of Marcus laughing so hard he had nearly knocked over his wineglass.

I thought of Grandma's trembling hand resting on my wrist.

For the first time, I was certain of one thing.

I had been right to bring the check to the bank.

But I had no idea what the truth was going to cost me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: When the Manager Finally Explained Why He Had Closed the Door, I Understood That Christmas Dinner Had Revealed More About My Family Than Money

I had never seen a bank manager look so uncomfortable.
