he said.

I let him finish.

"I've got my key, but it won't open anything."

I looked at the boxes against the wall.

One of them had split along the top, exposing a corner of George's old fishing photograph.

I had spent the morning trying to organize my things.

I had been deciding which dishes I needed, which clothes to keep close, and which memories I could safely unpack.

It was ordinary work.

Quiet work.

For once, nobody else had been directing it.

Patrick's voice rose slightly.

"Did you hear me?"

"Yes."

"Then tell me what's happening."

I took a breath.

For years, I had believed that the hardest thing about making a decision was finding the courage to make it.

I was beginning to understand that the harder part came afterward.

You had to live with the reaction.

You had to hear the disappointment in someone's voice and resist the urge to take it back.

You had to let people experience the consequences of a choice you had made for yourself.

"I think you should read the notice on the window," I told him.

He went quiet.

I could picture him standing there with the key in his hand, looking at the words he had ignored a few moments earlier.

"What notice?"

"The one beside the door."

Another pause followed.

Then I heard Megan speaking in the background.

I couldn't make out every word, but I recognized her tone.

She sounded irritated.

Patrick moved away from her, or perhaps he simply lowered his voice.

"Mom, what have you done?"

The question hurt more than I expected.

Not because I regretted my decision.

Because a part of me had hoped he might understand it without making me defend myself.

I had wanted him to see the difference between being loved and being entitled to everything that love made possible.

Instead, he was standing outside a locked door, wondering why his access had disappeared.

I didn't answer immediately.

For once, I allowed the silence to remain.

And in that silence, I realized I was no longer the person waiting for permission to make a decision.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: While Patrick Demanded an Explanation, I Sat Beside the Lake and Remembered How Many Times I Had Called Giving In Love

I used to believe that if you loved your family enough, they would eventually understand.
