He said some things were being misunderstood, and that you had been given information without the full context."

I felt my jaw tighten.

It was a familiar kind of explanation.

Not a denial.

Not a confession.

Just enough uncertainty to make the person asking questions feel unreasonable.

"Did he tell you I was wrong?"

The woman hesitated.

"Not in those exact words."

I almost smiled.

There were many ways to call someone unreasonable without using the word.

Benjamin shifted again.

"I was trying to explain what happened," he said.

I turned toward him.

"You've had plenty of opportunities to do that."

He looked away.

I wanted to ask why he had waited until a stranger was sitting in my living room to start talking about explanations.

Instead, I returned my attention to the woman.

"What changed your mind?"

She touched the top page.

"I started checking what I had been told against the information available to me."

"And?"

"Some of it didn't match."

The words were simple.

They still changed the room.

Genevieve's shoulders stiffened.

Benjamin leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees.

"That's not entirely fair."

The woman didn't respond to him.

I noticed that.

Earlier, she had looked toward him before answering almost every question.

Now she seemed determined to finish what she had started.

She turned one page over.

"I realized I had been treating one person's account as though it were the same thing as the truth."

I sat down opposite her.

My legs had begun to feel unsteady, and I didn't want anyone to notice.

"Then tell me what you found."

She looked at me for a long moment.

"I don't want to make another mistake by giving you conclusions before you've seen the information yourself."

For the first time, I understood why she had brought the folder.

She wasn't simply there to apologize.

She was there to show me something.

That did not mean I trusted her.

It meant I was willing to listen.

She slid the first page across the table.

I reached for it.

The paper was ordinary.

White.

Thin.

There was nothing remarkable about the print or the handwritten marks along one edge.

Yet my fingers felt clumsy as I lifted it.

I began reading.

At first, I concentrated on the details.

Names.

Dates.

Amounts.

A few short notes written beside entries.

I read the page once, then started again.

The second time, I noticed something that had escaped me.

The information wasn't arranged the way I expected.

It connected separate events that I had previously considered unrelated.

I looked up.

"Where did this come from?"

The woman answered carefully.

"From information I could verify."

"Did Benjamin give you this?"

"No."

The answer came without hesitation.

Benjamin stared at the page.

I placed it on the table and picked up the next one.

The details continued.

I could not make sense of every entry yet, but I could see why the woman had come.

The papers raised questions that Benjamin's explanations had never answered.

Some details contradicted what I remembered.

Others contradicted what I had been told.

The worst part was that they didn't look like mistakes.

They looked like a pattern.

I set the second page down.

"How long have you had these?"

"Long enough to check them."

"Why didn't you come to me sooner?"

Her expression changed.

For a moment, she looked ashamed.

"I thought I was doing the right thing by staying out of it."

I knew that feeling.

It was the excuse people used when they wanted to believe their silence was neutral.

Sometimes silence protected the wrong person.

Sometimes it protected the person who stayed silent.

And sometimes it did both.

"Who did you think you were protecting?" I asked.

She looked toward Benjamin again.

This time, he spoke before she could.

"I never asked her to take sides."

The woman closed her eyes briefly.

"No," she said. "You didn't have to ask."

Benjamin's face tightened.

I looked from one to the other.

There was a conversation between them that I hadn't been part of, and I could feel its weight in the room.

But I wasn't going to let them turn this into a disagreement about what someone had intended.

Intentions were easy to discuss.

Records were harder to dismiss.

"Let's stay with the papers," I said.

The woman nodded.

She drew another sheet from the folder.

"This is what made me look again."

She placed it beside the first two.

I studied it.

There were references I recognized, though I couldn't immediately remember where I had seen them before.

One date brought back a conversation.

Another reminded me of a decision I had questioned and then accepted because Benjamin had sounded so certain.

I had treated his confidence as evidence.

It wasn't.

I had never admitted that to myself before.

I had told people that I trusted him because he had always seemed to know more than I did.

But knowing more wasn't the same as knowing better.

And knowing how to explain something wasn't proof that the explanation was true.

I read the page again.

"These details were available before," I said.

"Yes."

"Then why did nobody bring them to me?"

The woman took a breath.

"I can't answer for everyone."

It was an honest answer.

I disliked it because it left me with the same question I had carried into the room.

Benjamin finally looked at me.

"I didn't think you'd understand what you were looking at without the background."

I felt something inside me go still.

There it was.

Not a direct admission that he had kept information from me.

Something more revealing.

He had decided I wasn't capable of understanding it.

And because he believed that, he had allowed himself to choose what I should know.

"Did you ever consider explaining it?" I asked.

"I tried."

"When?"

He opened his mouth.

Then he stopped.

I waited.

He looked at Genevieve, perhaps hoping she would help him find the answer.

She didn't.

I realized I had seen that look before, too.

The small pause.

The glance toward someone else.

The expectation that another person would step in and make the situation easier.

For years, I had mistaken that behavior for discomfort.

Now I wondered whether I had been watching someone search for an exit.

The older woman gathered the papers into a neat stack.

"I understand that you have every reason to question me," she said. "I came here believing I understood what was happening. I don't believe that anymore."

I looked at her.

"Do you know what actually happened?"

"Not everything."

"Then what do you know?"

She placed both hands on the folder.

"I know I was too willing to accept one version of events. I know some of the information I was given doesn't hold up. And I know I shouldn't have allowed my assumptions to influence how I treated you."

Her voice faltered at the last sentence.

I didn't comfort her.

Not because I wanted her to suffer.

Because I needed her to understand that an apology could not erase what had already happened.

"I'm glad you checked," I said.

She nodded.

"But I need more than that."

"I understand."

"No," I said quietly. "You need to understand that I can't simply take your word for it now, either."

She looked down at the folder.

Then she pushed it closer to me.

"That's fair."

I examined the papers again.

I wanted to believe that the presence of someone who had changed her mind meant the situation was finally moving toward a resolution.

But I had been wrong about people before.

I wasn't going to replace one person's version of events with another person's version simply because the second one sounded more convincing.

I needed to know where every detail came from.

I needed to know which entries could be checked independently.

And I needed to know what Benjamin had understood when he first saw them.

I looked at him.

"Have you read these?"

He didn't answer quickly enough.

The pause lasted only a few seconds.

It felt longer.

"Some of them," he said.

"All of them?"

"No."

"Why not?"

He rubbed his palms together.

"I didn't think it would help."

I stared at him.

It was such a small answer.

That was what made it difficult to accept.

He had been willing to discuss the situation with another person, willing to offer his interpretation, and willing to let her believe she understood it.

But he had not thought it necessary to examine the full information himself.

Or he had examined it and did not want to say so.

I couldn't know which.

I only knew that I was tired of having to guess.

"Then we start there," I said.

Benjamin lifted his head.

"Start where?"

"With what you have read, what you haven't read, and what you told her before she checked the records."

Genevieve moved forward in her chair.

"We came here to sort this out."

I looked at her.

"Then we should stop avoiding the parts that are difficult."

She fell silent.

The older woman began arranging the pages in date order.

I helped her.

We worked without speaking for a while, comparing the headings and putting the documents into a sequence that made sense.

It was a small task.

Still, it felt different from everything that had come before.

Nobody was asking me to accept an explanation.

Nobody was telling me what I should think.

We were looking at the same information.

Together.

When we finished, the woman closed the folder and rested her hands on top.

"There is one more thing I should tell you," she said.

I looked at her.

"What is it?"

She glanced at Benjamin.

Then she turned back to me.

"The reason I came today wasn't only to show you the records."

I waited.

"I came because I realized I had been helping someone defend a position I no longer believed I could defend."

Benjamin's face changed.

Genevieve stared at the floor.

The woman continued before either of them could interrupt.

"I don't know what the final answer will be. But I won't keep repeating something simply because I believed it before."

For the first time since she had entered my house, I believed she meant what she said.

That did not make her right about everything.

It did not make Benjamin guilty of every suspicion I had ever entertained.

It meant the conversation had finally reached a place where the truth mattered more than keeping everyone comfortable.

I gathered the papers and placed them back inside the folder.

"We're going to check these," I said.

Benjamin nodded slowly.

Genevieve said nothing.

The woman looked relieved, though I couldn't tell whether she was relieved that I had agreed to continue or that she had finally delivered what she had come to say.

I wasn't ready to forgive anyone.

But I was ready to stop pretending that not knowing was the same as having nothing to worry about.

The papers remained on the table between us.

For once, nobody tried to move them out of sight.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: Benjamin Finally Had to Face the Questions He Had Avoided, While the Woman Who Once Defended Him Began to Explain Her Mistake

The woman did not begin speaking immediately.
