I thought I knew the important things."

He looked back at the letter.

"And Kenneth?"

"What about him?"

"Was your son involved in any of those discussions?"

"Not with me."

The words came out quickly.

I had never wanted Kenneth to worry about the practical details of our lives.

When Charles became older, I had taken on more of the household responsibilities.

I paid the bills, arranged appointments, and kept track of what needed to be renewed.

But the larger legal matters had always been handled between Charles and Mr. Abernathy.

I had trusted them.

That trust had seemed reasonable at the time.

Now it felt like a room I had entered without checking whether the door could be locked from the outside.

Mr. Abernathy folded the letter along its original creases.

"Your husband believed there were matters that should not be discussed until the right time."

"Did he tell you that?"

"Yes."

"When?"

He paused.

"Some years ago."

I stared at him.

"How many years?"

"I would rather not give you a number until I have reviewed the relevant documents."

I could not decide whether that was a careful legal answer or an attempt to avoid telling me something.

Perhaps it was both.

"Was Charles hiding something from me?"

Mr. Abernathy removed his glasses again.

"I believe he was keeping something from more than one person."

My throat tightened.

"Who?"

He looked down at the paper.

"I cannot answer that yet."

I nearly stood up.

I had driven across town in the rain, carrying a sealed envelope like a frightened child bringing a note to the principal's office.

I had expected an explanation.

Instead, every answer seemed to open another question.

"Then why did you ask me to come?"

"I didn't ask you to come," he said gently. "You came because you found something that concerned you."

I looked away.

He was right.

I had chosen to come.

I had chosen to ask.

I could not blame him for refusing to invent answers simply because I was desperate to hear them.

Still, desperation has a way of turning patience into anger.

"Is there something in that letter about Kenneth?"

Mr. Abernathy did not respond at once.

That was answer enough to make my heart begin to pound.

"Please," I said. "Don't make me guess."

He placed the letter on the desk between us.

"Your husband was concerned about what might happen after he was gone."

I stared at the paper.

"Everyone worries about their family after they die."

"Charles's concern was more specific than that."

I waited.

He continued.

"He wanted certain information kept secure until it could be handled properly."

"What information?"

"I need to examine the records before I can tell you."

I let out a breath that sounded almost like a laugh.

Not because anything was funny.

Because I could feel myself reaching the limit of what I could bear.

"You keep saying that."

"I know."

"And every time I ask a question, you give me another reason not to trust what I already know."

He lowered his eyes.

For the first time, I felt sorry for him.

Not because I believed he was right.

Because I suspected he had been carrying this burden for a long time.

And because I understood that the burden was now being handed to me.

"I don't want to hurt you," he said.

"Then tell me the truth."

"I intend to."

"All of it?"

He looked at me.

"As much as the evidence allows."

That answer was not comforting.

But it was honest.

I had to give him that.

He returned the letter to the envelope and set it aside.

Then he asked me to explain exactly how it had come into my possession.

I described the circumstances as clearly as I could.

I told him what I had found and what had happened afterward.

I spoke about Kenneth's visit.

I explained that his impatience had frightened me more than I wanted to admit.

I described the voicemail, including the way his voice had changed when he asked me to help him.

I did not pretend I knew what he wanted.

I only knew that he had sounded afraid.

When I finished, Mr. Abernathy remained silent.

Then he asked whether I had kept the original envelope and everything that had been with it.

I told him that I had.

"Good," he said.

The word was quiet, but it carried an urgency I could not ignore.

"Why?"

"Because I don't want anything misplaced."

He opened a notebook and began writing.

I watched the pen move across the page.

He recorded the date, the condition of the envelope, and the details I had given him.

It seemed excessive until I remembered how often Charles had insisted on keeping written records.

Perhaps the habit had rubbed off on his lawyer.

Perhaps they had both understood that memories could be questioned, while documents could be examined.

When he finished, he closed the notebook.

"I would like you to leave the envelope with me while I review the file."

I looked at it.

For a moment, I could not make myself release it.

It had become more than a letter.

It was the last tangible connection between the questions in my mind and the man who might have answered them.

I had already lost Charles.

I did not want to lose control of the only thing he had left me that seemed to matter.

Mr. Abernathy noticed my hesitation.

"You can take it with you if you prefer," he said. "I won't insist."

I considered that.

Then I pushed the envelope across the desk.

"Keep it."

He accepted it without comment.

I stood and reached for my coat.

I had expected to leave the office feeling relieved.

Instead, I felt as if I had walked into a building carrying one problem and come out carrying several more.

At the door, I turned back.

"Mr. Abernathy?"

"Yes?"

"If Charles believed this information needed to be protected, why did he leave it where I could find it?"

The lawyer did not answer immediately.

His gaze moved toward the envelope.

Then he looked at me.

"That is one of the questions I hope to answer."

I waited for more.

Nothing came.

I left the office with my hands empty.

Outside, the rain had stopped.

The pavement shone beneath the gray morning light, and people moved along the sidewalk with their collars turned up against the cold.

I stood beside my car for a moment before unlocking it.

I had spent years believing that my husband's silence was simply part of his nature.

Now I wondered whether some of that silence had been deliberate.

And whether I had been the person he trusted to uncover it, or merely the person he had expected to find it after he was gone.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: My Son’s Pleading Voice Followed Me Home, While the Questions About His Father Became Harder to Ignore

Mr. Abernathy kept his hand on the envelope.
