He preferred to keep moving, finding something to repair or rearrange whenever the conversation became uncomfortable.

I used to accuse him of avoiding me.

He would tell me I was imagining things.

Neither of us had been willing to admit what we were doing.

I looked at the key again.

"Is this about Derek?"

Dad's expression changed.

It was slight, but I noticed.

He looked toward the door, then back at me.

"Why would you ask that?"

I could have pretended I hadn't seen his reaction.

Instead, I answered honestly.

"Because whenever something important happens in this family, I feel like I'm the last person to know."

The words came out sharper than I intended.

Dad lowered his head.

I immediately regretted the way I had said it.

Not because the feeling was untrue, but because I had used it as a weapon rather than an explanation.

That was something I had done too often.

I could spend months keeping quiet, then unload every disappointment in a single conversation and wonder why the other person stopped listening.

Dad had his own faults.

I had mine.

For years, we had treated those facts as reasons to remain distant.

I rubbed my palms against my trousers.

"I'm not trying to start another argument."

"I know."

He said it without looking at me.

That hurt more than if he had accused me of something.

He sounded tired.

Not angry.

Just tired of the distance between us.

I glanced around the workshop.

A half-finished wooden frame rested against the far wall. Its corners had been carefully joined, but one section remained unfinished.

I remembered seeing it months earlier.

I had asked Dad what he was making.

He told me he hadn't decided.

At the time, I had laughed and asked why he was bothering to build something without knowing what it was for.

Now I wondered whether he had been waiting for an answer he couldn't find.

I stood and walked toward the workbench.

The tools were arranged with the same care I remembered from childhood.

Dad had always insisted that everything belonged in its proper place.

A misplaced screwdriver could ruin an afternoon.

A missing measuring tape could turn a simple job into an argument.

I used to think he was being unreasonable.

Now I saw the orderliness differently.

The workshop was one of the few places where he could control the outcome of his efforts.

Wood did not remember old arguments.

It did not bring up mistakes from ten years earlier.

If he measured carefully and worked patiently, the pieces would eventually fit together.

People were harder.

I turned back toward him.

"Did you find the key here?"

Dad shook his head.

"No."

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly for me not to notice.

I waited for him to continue.

He didn't.

I felt the old irritation rise in my chest.

There it was again.

A question.

A partial answer.

Another silence.

I could have walked out.

A younger version of me would have done exactly that, convinced that leaving first was the same as protecting myself.

But I had come too far to repeat the same mistake.

So I stayed.

"Then where did it come from?"

Dad looked down at the workbench.

"I don't know if I can explain everything in one afternoon."

"You don't have to explain everything."

I paused.

"But you have to tell me something."

He slowly pulled out the stool beside mine.

For the first time since we entered the workshop, he sat down.

The movement seemed to take more effort than it should have.

I looked away to give him a moment.

Outside, the wind moved through the garden.

A branch brushed against the workshop wall, producing a soft scraping sound.

I remembered how the place had looked when I was a child.

Dad had kept the gate repaired then. The door opened without resistance, and the workbench had stood a little farther from the window.

I had been small enough to stand on an overturned crate so I could see what he was doing.

Derek had rarely joined us.

When he did, he spent most of the time asking when we would finish.

Dad never forced him to stay.

That was one thing I had always admired about my father.

He let us be different.

Or at least, I had believed he did.

I looked at the key again.

"Is there something you kept from us?"

Dad took a slow breath.

"Yes."

The word seemed to change the temperature of the room.

I had prepared myself for another denial.

I had expected him to tell me that I was worrying over nothing, that old objects sometimes turned up in strange places, that there was no reason to make a problem out of it.

Instead, he had admitted it.

One word.

No excuse.

No attempt to soften the answer.

I sat down again.

"What did you keep?"

He rubbed his thumb along the edge of the workbench.

"Something I should have dealt with a long time ago."

I waited.

He looked at me, and for a moment I saw the father I remembered from my childhood.

Not the man who had become increasingly quiet over the years.

Not the stubborn old man I sometimes described to other people when I wanted them to understand why I rarely visited.

Just Dad.

A man who had made mistakes and spent too long convincing himself that silence was the safest way to live with them.

"I thought I was protecting this family," he said.

The admission left me with more questions than answers.

I wanted to ask what he meant by protecting us.

I wanted to know why he had waited so long.

And I wanted to understand what had changed.

But before I could speak, Dad picked up the key again.

He held it out between us.

"There's something you need to see."

I looked at the small piece of rusted metal.

Then I looked at my father.

For once, I didn't ask him to explain himself before I agreed to follow.

I simply reached for the key.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: I Had Spent Years Blaming My Father for His Silence, Never Considering What My Own Refusal to Listen Had Cost Us

Dad placed the key on the workbench.
