And I want you to understand that what happened last night is serious."

"I understand."

He was quiet for a moment.

"Are you certain you want to sell the house?"

I looked toward the kitchen table.

The locket sat beside the folder.

"Yes."

"We'll need to review the company's obligations, the occupancy arrangements, and the sale documents. We also need to make sure nothing in the transaction creates an unnecessary legal problem."

"That's why I'm calling you."

"I'll start immediately."

After we ended the call, I sat still for several minutes.

I wasn't celebrating.

There was nothing to celebrate.

I had wanted my son to grow into a decent man.

I had wanted him to understand that success meant more than owning expensive things.

I had wanted to believe that, beneath the arrogance and the constant demands, he still cared about the person who had helped him.

Now I had to accept that I could not force him to become the person I had hoped he would be.

At 8:23, I called the manager responsible for Cedarline Capital's property affairs.

I explained that I intended to sell the River Oaks house.

She asked whether I wanted to pursue a standard listing or consider a private transaction.

"Find out what the private market will offer."

"Do you have a preferred closing date?"

"As soon as the necessary documents can be completed properly."

She didn't ask why.

She had worked with me long enough to know that I didn't make major decisions casually.

After the call, I opened the company's records.

The property had been purchased outright five years earlier.

There was no mortgage to complicate the sale.

The title was clear, and the company's records showed that Cedarline had retained ownership throughout Trevor's occupancy.

I checked each document.

Then I checked it again.

I wasn't going to let anger make me careless.

A fast decision still had to be a sound one.

At nine o'clock, Daniel called back.

He had reviewed the relevant documents and confirmed the next steps.

He reminded me that the sale had to follow the company's legal obligations and that Trevor's living arrangement would need to be handled according to the applicable documents and law.

I told him I understood.

I had no intention of pretending that selling a property meant I could ignore every obligation attached to it.

I wanted the house sold properly.

Nothing more.

At 9:10, Cedarline's manager began arranging a private sale to a buyer who had been looking for a property of that kind.

The buyer had the financial capacity to move quickly.

There would be no need to wait for a lengthy chain of transactions, provided the necessary checks and documents were completed.

I reviewed the proposed terms.

I asked questions about the closing process.

I checked the figures.

I made certain that the sale was being handled through the company and not through any personal arrangement involving Trevor.

By late morning, the paperwork was ready for my signature.

I changed clothes carefully.

My ribs still hurt, and my cheek had darkened.

I considered postponing the appointment.

Then I thought about how many times I had delayed a necessary decision because I wanted to spare someone else discomfort.

Not this time.

I arrived at the office shortly before noon.

The documents were arranged in a neat stack on the conference table.

Daniel was there.

So was the representative handling the transaction.

We reviewed the final papers together.

I read every page.

The sale price.

The property description.

The terms.

The transfer documents.

Nothing was rushed past me.

At 11:49, I signed.

My handwriting looked steadier than I felt.

I placed the pen on the table.

For a moment, I thought of Trevor receiving the keys five years earlier.

He had smiled so broadly that day.

He had told me he would never forget what I had done for him.

I wondered whether he remembered saying it.

I wondered whether he understood that gratitude wasn't a debt paid once and forgotten.

It was something a person showed through the way they treated others.

I gathered my copy of the documents.

The transaction still had to proceed through its required steps, and the new owner would have to handle the property's occupancy according to the law.

But the decision had been made.

The house was no longer a promise I intended to keep giving my son.

It was an asset belonging to a company I controlled, and I had chosen to sell it.

When I stepped outside, my phone rang.

Trevor's name appeared on the screen.

I stared at it.

Then I answered.

"Mom, what did you do?"

His voice was sharp.

I could hear the strain beneath it.

"What are you talking about?"

"There's someone at the house."

I said nothing.

"They're saying the property has been sold."

I looked at the papers in my hand.

"Then you should ask them to explain the transaction."

"Don't play games with me."

"I'm not."

"That house belongs to me."

There it was again.

The same belief.

The same certainty.

"Trevor, you need to speak with the people handling the property."

He went silent for a moment.

Then his voice rose.

"You can't do this to me."

I closed my eyes.

I had heard that sentence in different forms for years.

Whenever he wanted something, my refusal became an injury.

Whenever I established a boundary, he called it betrayal.

"Please direct any questions about the sale to the proper representative," I said.

"Mom!"

I ended the call.

My hand trembled afterward.

I had expected anger.

I had expected accusations.

I had even expected him to threaten to cut me out of his life.

What I hadn't expected was how much it would hurt to hear him speak as though the only wrong that mattered was the possibility of losing his house.

I put the phone away.

Then I went home.

Click
