I was talking to you."

He glanced toward the dining room again.

His friends were settling into their seats.

Kristen had moved closer, pretending to examine a vase on the console table.

Trevor lowered his voice.

"You walk into my house and start telling me what I should remember."

I looked around the room.

The polished floors.

The fireplace.

The staircase where sunlight fell every morning.

I remembered the first time I had toured the property.

I remembered the inspection report.

I remembered the negotiations that had brought the seller's price down.

I remembered signing the closing documents while Trevor sat beside me, talking excitedly about where he would put his desk.

I remembered his gratitude.

And I remembered how quickly it had disappeared.

"I didn't come here to argue," I said.

"Then stop questioning me."

"I'm asking you not to pretend that the house appeared in your life without anyone's help."

He laughed once.

It wasn't a happy sound.

"You gave me a place to live. Fine. I get it. Do you want me to thank you every day?"

"No."

"Then what do you want?"

I took a breath.

"Respect would be enough."

He looked at me for several seconds.

Then he shook his head.

"You always make everything about yourself."

I felt those words more deeply than I wanted to admit.

Not because they were true.

Because I had spent so many years making his life easier that I had failed to notice how much he resented being reminded of it.

Kristen finally joined us.

"Trevor, the guests are waiting."

She looked at me.

"Perhaps this conversation can happen another time."

I nodded.

I had no intention of continuing it in front of the guests.

But as I turned away, I noticed the locket still sitting on the side table.

The brown paper had fallen to the floor.

I bent to pick it up.

Trevor saw me.

"Leave it."

I straightened.

"What?"

"I said leave it. You don't have to make a scene over every little thing."

I looked at the locket.

Then at him.

I could have swallowed the insult.

I had done it before.

But something about the way he spoke, as though I were a troublesome visitor in a home I had purchased, finally exhausted the patience I had carried for years.

"Trevor, don't forget who made this possible."

The room seemed to shrink around us.

His face changed.

I saw anger first.

Then embarrassment.

Then something harder.

"Get out of my house."

I stood still.

He had never spoken to me that way before.

Not directly.

Not with that much contempt.

"Trevor, I'm your mother."

"And I'm a grown man. You don't get to walk in here and talk down to me."

"I'm not talking down to you."

"You're doing it right now."

Kristen stood behind him.

She didn't try to calm him.

She didn't ask either of us to stop.

She simply watched.

Trevor pushed me.

It happened so quickly that I barely had time to understand what he was doing.

My back struck the edge of the dining table.

Pain spread through my ribs.

I grabbed the table to keep myself upright.

For one brief moment, he looked surprised.

Then he raised his hand.

The first slap turned my face sideways.

I stared at him.

I couldn't believe what had happened.

The second came before I could speak.

Then the third.

I tried to move away.

He followed.

His hand struck my cheek again.

Someone in the next room stopped talking.

I heard a chair scrape against the floor.

Nobody came to help.

I began counting.

Four.

Five.

Six.

I don't remember every movement.

I remember the sound.

I remember the warmth spreading across my face.

I remember thinking that I had never been afraid of a difficult negotiation, a collapsing project, or a room full of men who wanted to take advantage of me.

But I was afraid of my own son.

Seven.

Eight.

Nine.

He kept shouting, though I could barely understand his words.

He accused me of humiliating him.

He told me I had no right to question him.

He said the house was his and that I needed to learn to stay away.

I tried to protect my face with one arm.

He knocked it aside.

Ten.

Eleven.

Twelve.

Kristen remained where she was.

Her expression disturbed me almost as much as Trevor's violence.

She wasn't frightened.

She wasn't pleading with him to stop.

She looked entertained.

That was when I understood that this wasn't simply an argument that had gone too far.

Something had been wrong in that house for a long time.

I had only refused to name it.

Thirteen.

Fourteen.

Fifteen.

I tasted blood.

My cheek throbbed.

I heard somebody whisper Trevor's name from the other room, but no one stepped forward.

Sixteen.

Seventeen.

Eighteen.

I stopped trying to understand what I had done to deserve it.

There was no answer that mattered.

Nothing I had said could justify what he was doing.

Nineteen.

Twenty.

Twenty-one.

By then, I had stopped thinking of him as the little boy who once waited by the window when I returned from a business trip.

I remembered that boy.

But I couldn't find him in the man standing in front of me.

Twenty-two.

Twenty-three.

Twenty-four.

His breathing grew heavier.

He was no longer speaking clearly.

He was simply angry, and I had become the nearest place to put it.

Twenty-five.

Twenty-six.

Twenty-seven.

My knees weakened.

I held on to the table.

I thought about the construction sites I had visited when I was younger.

I thought about the workers who had trusted me to keep my word.

I thought about the contracts I had refused to sign because the terms were wrong.

And I wondered why I had spent so many years ignoring the warning signs in my own family.

Twenty-eight.

Twenty-nine.

Thirty.

Then he stopped.

I stood there, breathing through my mouth.

My lip had split.

My ribs hurt where I had struck the table.

Trevor stepped back.

He looked at me as though he expected me to apologize.

Kristen adjusted the sleeve of her dress.

Nobody spoke.

I reached for a napkin on the table and pressed it against my mouth.

Trevor shook his head.

"Maybe now you'll understand."

I looked at him.

I didn't answer.

I picked up the locket and wrapped it in the brown paper again.

My hands were shaking.

I hated that he could see it.

But I wasn't going to give him another reason to feel powerful.

I put the package in my handbag.

Then I walked toward the front door.

Kristen moved aside to let me pass.

Neither of them followed me.

Outside, the cold air touched my face.

I stood on the front step for a moment and looked back at the house.

The lights were still on.

The guests were still inside.

Somewhere behind those windows, my son was probably telling himself that he had defended his pride.

I walked to my car.

I didn't call him names.

I didn't shout through the windows.

I didn't threaten to take the house away.

I simply drove home.

For the first time in years, I allowed myself to see him clearly.

He wasn't a helpless young man who needed one more chance.

He was an adult who had chosen to hurt his own mother.

And I was finished protecting him from the consequences of his choices.

<a
