I asked.

"Child services got involved."

He said it as if that explained everything.

Then he added something that stayed with me long after he left.

"Sometimes it only takes one mistake for a parent to lose everything."

I didn't answer immediately.

Lily lifted her head from her drawing.

"Daddy, look."

Daniel turned toward her.

She held up the page, showing him the butterfly.

One wing was pink, and the other was still mostly white.

He gave her a brief smile.

"That's nice, sweetheart."

Then he turned away.

Lily returned to her coloring.

I watched Daniel walk toward the end of the kitchen island.

He picked up his phone and tapped the screen.

For a moment, I thought about asking why he had brought up custody.

I wanted to know whether something had happened at work that had upset him.

I wanted to know why he had chosen that particular morning to talk about a mother losing her children.

But I said nothing.

Looking back, that silence makes me ashamed.

Not because I should have understood everything right then.

I couldn't have.

But I should have trusted the uncomfortable feeling I was trying so hard to dismiss.

Instead, I reached for Lily's crayons and arranged them by color.

It gave my hands something to do.

Daniel checked the time again.

Then he picked up his mug and took another drink.

He seemed perfectly calm.

That was what made the conversation feel so strange.

He wasn't angry.

He wasn't arguing with me.

He was simply talking about a subject that had no obvious connection to our morning.

Then he glanced toward the dining room.

I followed his eyes.

A small black camera had been mounted high on the wall a few days earlier.

It was easy to overlook.

The device was round, with a dark glass lens that pointed toward the wooden dining table.

A tiny blue light glowed on its surface.

I had noticed it when Daniel first installed the system.

He had told me that it was an ordinary security measure.

Something useful for protecting the house.

At the time, I hadn't objected.

We had a family.

We had a child.

I understood the appeal of knowing what happened at home when nobody was watching.

Still, I had never been entirely comfortable with a camera inside our living space.

There was something unsettling about the idea that an ordinary family moment could become a recording.

I had mentioned that to Daniel once.

He had brushed away my concern.

He said the system would help us keep track of anything unusual.

Now, with his words about custody still hanging in the air, I found myself looking at the camera again.

"Did you finish setting up the new system?"

Daniel glanced toward the wall.

"It's working."

"All of it?"

He picked up his phone and woke the screen.

"The motion detection is active."

I looked at the camera.

"So it records whenever someone moves?"

"That's the idea."

He swiped his thumb across the display.

"The footage stays on the local system."

I didn't know much about security equipment.

I understood that the recordings were stored somewhere in the house rather than depending entirely on an outside service.

That was enough for me at the time.

I looked back at him.

"Do we really need cameras inside?"

Daniel's expression barely changed.

"Why wouldn't we?"

"I don't know. It just feels strange."

He slipped his phone into his pocket.

"You never know what might happen when you're not paying attention."

I stared at him.

There was nothing openly threatening in those words.

A person could say them for perfectly ordinary reasons.

Parents worried about their children.

People bought security systems.

Families tried to protect their homes.

But Daniel had just spent several minutes talking about dangerous objects, unfit mothers, and children being taken away.

Now he was reminding me that something could happen when I wasn't watching.

I wanted to ask him what he meant.

Instead, I looked at Lily.

She was coloring the butterfly's body yellow.

Her small hand moved steadily across the page.

Nothing appeared wrong.

Nothing appeared unusual.

I told myself I was reading too much into an awkward conversation.

Daniel was a careful man.

He liked order.

He liked schedules and plans.

Sometimes he spoke about difficult subjects without realizing how unsettling they sounded.

That was the explanation I chose.

It was the easiest one.

And I wanted it to be true.

Daniel reached for the suitcase handle.

The wheels made a short scraping sound as he pulled it away from the kitchen island.

I moved my chair back to give him room.

"Have a safe flight."

He nodded.

"I'll call when I land."

He walked past me without stopping.

He didn't bend down to kiss Lily goodbye.

He didn't ask to see the finished butterfly.

He simply crossed the kitchen and headed toward the door with his suitcase rolling behind him.

Lily barely noticed.

She was trying to keep the yellow crayon inside the lines.

I watched Daniel leave.

The front door closed.

A few seconds later, I heard the faint sound of his suitcase wheels moving across the path outside.

Then there was silence.

I stayed at the counter for a while.

The coffee machine clicked as it cooled.

The camera's blue light remained steady in the dining room.

I kept thinking about the conversation.

Not the entire conversation.

Just one part.

The way Daniel had talked about a parent making a mistake and losing everything.

I didn't know why he had said it.

I didn't know whether it meant anything.

And I had no evidence that it did.

That morning, all I had was a strange feeling and a few sentences from my husband.

I wanted to believe that was all they were.

Words.

Nothing more.

But when I finally stood up to clear the breakfast dishes, I looked once more at the little black camera.

For the first time since Daniel had installed it, I wondered what it might show me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: The Little Blue Light Kept Watching Our Home, and I Began to Wonder Whether My Husband Had a Reason for Mentioning Custody

I used to believe that the most dangerous things in a family were the ones everyone could see.
