18 – Daniel’s Messages Were Still Waiting, but I Could No Longer Let Them Decide What I Had to Do First

I knew the messages were still on my phone even when I wasn't looking at them.

I could remember the wording without opening the screen.

The questions.

The impatience.

The reference to Lily's bedtime.

The accusation that I was making everything dramatic.

I had read those words enough times that I could hear them in my head.

I wanted to stop hearing them.

But I also wanted to understand them.

Those two desires pulled me in opposite directions.

Part of me wanted to answer immediately so that the conversation would no longer hang over me.

Another part knew that answering simply to escape the discomfort would not necessarily help.

I might send something I regretted.

I might explain more than I understood.

I might become so focused on defending my decision that I would lose sight of why I had made it.

I did not want that to happen.

I wanted any conversation with Daniel to be guided by what was necessary and appropriate, not by my need to make the anxiety disappear.

I reminded myself that I could seek guidance from the medical team about communication and next steps.

I did not have to make every decision alone.

That was something I should have accepted sooner.

I had always been accustomed to handling family problems privately.

If something went wrong, I tried to talk it through at home.

If there was a misunderstanding, I looked for the right words.

If a decision needed to be made, I wanted Daniel and me to reach it together.

I believed in keeping our family matters within the family whenever possible.

There was nothing wrong with wanting privacy.

But I was beginning to see that privacy could not become a reason to avoid seeking appropriate help.

This situation involved Lily's fear.

It deserved careful attention.

It deserved the guidance of people trained to work with children.

I could respect my relationship with Daniel while still allowing professionals to help us determine what Lily needed.

Those things were not opposites.

I had to stop treating them as though choosing one automatically meant rejecting the other.

I looked at the phone again.

For a moment, I imagined writing a long message.

I would explain that I had not brought Lily to the hospital to create a problem.

I would explain that I was frightened and trying to make careful decisions.

I would explain that I did not know what to say because I was still trying to understand what had happened.

Then I imagined reading the message back.

It sounded like a defense of myself.

I realized I was already preparing to argue about whether I had done something wrong.

But I had not yet received the guidance I needed about the next steps.

I did not need to turn the situation into an argument before I understood how best to proceed.

I put the phone down again.

I did not feel triumphant.

I felt uncomfortable.

There was a difference between choosing not to answer immediately and feeling at peace with that choice.

I was not at peace.

I was trying to be careful.

I knew Daniel might be frustrated by my silence.

I knew he might have questions.

I knew that we would need to address the practical realities of parenting and communication.

I was not pretending those responsibilities had disappeared.

I was simply refusing to let the urgency of a message replace the judgment I needed to exercise.

I could return to the conversation when I had a clearer understanding of what was appropriate.

Until then, I needed to keep my attention on Lily and the medical team.

I thought about the bedtime message again.

Daniel had referred to Lily's usual routine as though the routine should settle the question of what happened next.

I knew how important routines could be for children.

I had seen how much comfort Lily found in familiar habits.

But a routine was not an answer to every situation.

Sometimes the normal plan had to wait.

Sometimes a child needed something different from what had been expected.

I could not let the desire to return to an ordinary evening become more important than understanding why Lily was frightened.

I also could not conclude that Daniel's reference to bedtime revealed everything about his intentions.

It was one message.

I needed to treat it as one message.

The same was true of his question about where we were.

I had not told him about the examination.

I had not explained why we were at the hospital.

That fact bothered me because I did not understand how he had reached his conclusion that I was being dramatic.

But I still did not know what he knew or what he believed.

I could ask about that later if it remained relevant.

I could not answer the question by guessing.

I had to leave room for facts to emerge in their proper order.

That was another thing I had never expected to learn during an ordinary day that had become anything but ordinary.

I had thought courage meant confronting a difficult situation head-on.

Now I understood that courage could also mean refusing to rush toward a confrontation when there were more important things to consider.

It could mean accepting that I did not yet know enough.

It could mean asking for help instead of trying to prove that I could manage everything alone.

I looked at Lily.

She was still near me.

I wanted to tell her that I was proud of her for speaking up.

I wanted to reassure her that she had not done anything wrong by telling me how she felt.

But I also knew that I needed to be careful about turning the moment into another conversation about the situation.

I did not want my words to suggest what she should say next.

I did not want her to feel that I expected a particular explanation.

I could show her that I was there without directing her words.

I could let the medical team guide the conversation when the time came.

That was what Dr. Lawson had recommended.

I needed to trust that advice.

I had already made one important decision by taking Lily seriously enough to seek help.

Now I needed to make the next decisions with the same care.

I could be honest about what I knew.

I could admit what I did not know.

I could avoid accusing Daniel of things I could not establish.

I could also avoid dismissing Lily's fear because the implications were difficult for me to face.

I did not have to choose between those responsibilities.

I had to carry them together.

That did not mean the choices would become easy.

It meant I could stop pretending that a single answer would make every part of the situation simple.

I had no way to know how the conversation with Daniel would go.

I had no way to know what the evaluation would reveal.

I had no way to know how long I would need to sit with uncertainty.

But I could decide not to make the situation harder by acting out of panic.

I could keep my attention where it belonged.

The phone was still there.

The messages were still unanswered.

I would deal with them when I had the guidance and information needed to do so carefully.

For now, I did not need to prove anything to Daniel.

I needed to remain present for Lily.

<a
