17 – I Had Spent So Long Searching for Certainty That I Almost Forgot What Lily Needed From Me

I stayed beside Lily and tried to let the room be quiet.

I had spent so much time thinking about what might happen next that I had nearly forgotten how to be still.

My mind kept moving ahead.

It wanted answers about Daniel.

It wanted an explanation for the messages.

It wanted to know what the medical team might discover and what that discovery would mean for our family.

But none of those questions could be answered simply because I kept thinking about them.

I had to learn to wait without turning every moment into another test.

That was harder than I expected.

I glanced at Lily's hand resting against my sweater.

She had not asked me to explain anything.

She had not asked me to make sense of the messages on my phone.

She had not asked me to decide what Daniel's words meant.

She had only needed me to take her seriously when she told me she did not want to go home with him.

I kept coming back to that.

It was the one thing I could not afford to lose beneath all my other thoughts.

I remembered how quickly my mind had begun searching for explanations.

Maybe I had misunderstood something.

Maybe Daniel had misunderstood something.

Maybe there was an ordinary reason for words that now seemed troubling.

I could think of possibilities all day.

None of them would change the fact that Lily had been frightened.

And none of them gave me permission to dismiss her fear.

I had to let that remain true even while I waited to understand the rest.

I had always thought that listening meant hearing what someone said and then responding.

Now I understood that listening could also mean resisting the urge to respond too quickly.

It could mean leaving a question alone.

It could mean allowing a professional to ask the questions that needed to be asked.

It could mean accepting that I was not the person best equipped to guide every part of this situation.

That last thought was difficult for me.

I was Lily's mother.

I wanted to be the person who could make everything better.

I wanted her to look at me and feel that I had an answer for every frightening thing in the world.

But loving her did not mean I could make every frightening thing disappear.

It meant I had to recognize when she needed help beyond what I could provide on my own.

Dr. Lawson had not asked me to solve the situation.

The doctor had explained what the medical team would do and why it mattered to let trained people guide the conversation.

I needed to trust that guidance enough to follow it.

I did not need to understand every part of the process before taking the next step.

I could ask questions when I needed clarification.

I could tell the medical team what I knew without adding conclusions I could not support.

I could explain that Lily had expressed fear and let the professionals determine how best to continue.

That was a more useful responsibility than trying to become an investigator.

I had almost fallen into that role without noticing.

I had been reviewing memories.

I had been examining Daniel's messages.

I had been trying to decide whether the words on my screen matched the person I remembered.

I had even begun wondering whether ordinary moments from years earlier contained meanings I had missed.

The questions felt important because I was frightened.

But I had to admit that I did not have enough information to answer them.

Going over them repeatedly did not create new information.

It only made me more tired.

I needed to stop treating exhaustion as evidence that I was getting closer to the truth.

Sometimes thinking longer simply meant thinking longer.

I looked toward Lily.

I wondered whether she could sense my worry even when I tried to hide it.

Children noticed more than adults sometimes realized.

I did not want my face to become another source of uncertainty for her.

I could not promise that I felt calm.

I could try to keep my fear from becoming something she had to comfort me about.

I could keep my voice gentle.

I could avoid asking questions that served my need for reassurance rather than her needs.

I could let her decide when she wanted to speak about ordinary things.

And if she needed quiet, I could allow that too.

I had once thought silence meant something was missing.

Now I was learning that silence could be a place where someone was allowed to feel what they felt without being asked to explain it.

That mattered to me.

It mattered because I could see how easily a frightened parent might begin asking questions simply to relieve their own uncertainty.

I understood the impulse.

I had felt it myself.

I wanted to know what had happened.

I wanted to know why Lily had been afraid.

I wanted to know what she meant when she asked me not to let her go home with her father.

But wanting to know did not mean I should ask her to provide the answer.

The medical team could help determine the appropriate next steps.

My job was to support Lily while that happened.

I could do that without making her responsible for my peace of mind.

The phone remained nearby.

I had stopped checking it every few moments, but I was still aware of it.

Daniel's name had once been one of the most familiar things I saw on a screen.

It had meant a grocery list, a reminder, or a question about when we would be home.

Now I noticed the way my body reacted whenever I thought about his messages.

I did not like that reaction.

I wanted to return to the ease I had felt before.

I wanted the phone to become ordinary again.

But I could not make that happen by pretending the messages had not affected me.

I could acknowledge how they made me feel without deciding that I knew why Daniel had sent them.

That distinction was becoming important.

I had spent years believing that understanding a person meant knowing what their words meant before they finished speaking.

Perhaps familiarity had made me confident.

Perhaps I had relied on routine more than I realized.

Whatever the reason, I could not use that confidence as a substitute for careful judgment now.

I had to allow the present situation to be examined on its own terms.

I also had to allow myself to be uncertain without becoming careless.

That was the balance I kept trying to find.

Take Lily seriously.

Do not invent answers.

Follow the medical team's guidance.

Wait for information.

Keep listening.

The list was short, but following it required me to resist nearly every instinct that had taken over since Lily first expressed her fear.

I wanted to rush.

I wanted to ask.

I wanted to call Daniel and make the discomfort between us stop.

Instead, I stayed where I was.

I did not know whether that would make the next hour easier.

I only knew it was the most careful choice I could make with the information I had.

I looked at Lily's hand again.

The small fingers against my sweater reminded me that she did not need me to be certain about everything.

She needed me not to ignore her.

She needed me not to pressure her.

She needed me to take the next step with care.

I could do those things.

I could not promise myself an answer before the people helping us had a chance to do their work.

So I stopped trying to force one out of the silence.

I remained beside my daughter and gave the moment the attention it deserved.
