16 – I Stopped Demanding an Answer From Every Silence and Tried to Make Room for What We Still Did Not Know

By then, I had begun to notice how often I was trying to fill the silence.

If Lily didn't speak, I wondered what she was thinking.

If the phone stayed quiet, I wondered whether Daniel was angry.

If I remembered something from our life together, I wondered whether it meant more than I had understood at the time.

Every quiet moment seemed to invite another question.

I had been treating those questions as problems that needed immediate answers.

I was tired of doing that.

I was also frightened of what might happen if I stopped.

For years, I had believed that a good parent needed to anticipate trouble.

I thought I was supposed to notice every change, understand every feeling, and respond before a small problem became a larger one.

That belief had come from wanting to do right by Lily.

But it had also left me expecting myself to know things I could not possibly know.

I could pay attention to her.

I could take her words seriously.

I could seek help when I did not understand what was happening.

I could not read her mind.

I could not see the future.

And I could not turn every silence into an explanation.

I needed to accept those limits.

They did not make me less of a mother.

They made it necessary for me to ask for help.

I remembered Dr. Lawson's careful explanation.

The pediatric team would continue the evaluation.

A child-protection specialist could speak with Lily in a supportive and appropriate way.

I was not being asked to investigate the situation on my own.

I was being asked to keep Lily somewhere she felt safe and allow trained professionals to guide the process.

I could follow that advice.

I could stop trying to prepare the perfect question for Lily.

I could stop rehearsing what I might say to Daniel.

I could let the next step come from the people who were helping us rather than from the most frightened part of my mind.

That did not mean I would stop thinking.

It meant I would try to think in a way that did not place more pressure on Lily.

I wanted to ask her whether she felt better.

I wanted to ask whether she needed anything.

Those were ordinary questions, and I knew there was nothing wrong with caring about her comfort.

Still, I paused before speaking.

I did not want every question to become another invitation for her to explain the situation.

I did not want her to feel that my attention depended on her ability to give me an answer.

She could be quiet and still deserve my attention.

She could be frightened without explaining why.

She could need time without having to justify it.

I could remain beside her without trying to direct what she said.

That was something I could offer.

I looked at the phone once more.

Daniel's name still brought a complicated reaction.

I remembered the man who had helped assemble Lily's crib.

I remembered the pictures he had taken when she began walking.

I remembered the promises he had made about making sure she never had to be afraid.

Those memories did not disappear because I was sitting in a hospital with questions I could not answer.

But they did not settle those questions, either.

I had to allow the memories to remain what they were.

They were part of the history we shared.

They were not a substitute for understanding the present.

I could be grateful for moments that had been good without using them to dismiss what Lily had said.

I could feel uncertain about Daniel's messages without treating my uncertainty as proof of his intentions.

I could acknowledge that I was frightened without allowing fear to make every decision for me.

Those distinctions were not easy.

I had to remind myself of them repeatedly.

Whenever my thoughts rushed ahead, I brought them back to the room.

The phone was there.

Lily was there.

I was there.

The medical team had explained what would happen next.

That was enough information to guide my immediate choices.

It was not enough to answer every question about our family.

I had to stop expecting it to.

I also had to stop expecting myself to reach a final conclusion before the evaluation had continued.

There was a difference between being prepared and being certain.

I could be prepared to listen.

I could be prepared to ask the medical team for guidance.

I could be prepared to follow their recommendations.

I could be prepared to take Lily's fear seriously.

I did not have to know the final explanation to do those things.

For a while, I had thought uncertainty was the enemy.

I wanted to remove it as quickly as possible.

Now I began to see that rushing toward an answer could create its own risks.

If I decided too quickly that Daniel's messages meant something terrible, I might mistake my fear for knowledge.

If I decided too quickly that the messages meant nothing, I might ignore something worth understanding.

If I pressed Lily for details because I needed reassurance, I might put my needs ahead of hers.

None of those outcomes would help me care for her well.

So I tried to let the uncertainty remain.

Not because it was comfortable.

Because I did not yet have enough information to replace it with anything more reliable.

I thought about how I would explain this day to myself later.

I knew I would probably revisit the messages.

I would probably wonder whether I should have answered the phone.

I might wonder whether there had been a better way to handle each small decision.

That was what I did when something frightened me.

I went back through it, looking for the point where I could have made everything easier.

But I could not use that habit to judge myself before the situation had even unfolded.

I had made the decision to seek help because Lily was frightened.

I had listened to Dr. Lawson.

I had been told not to press Lily for details or suggest answers.

I had been encouraged to let trained professionals guide the conversation.

Those were the facts I needed to keep in view.

I did not have to punish myself for being uncertain.

I did not have to solve every possible problem before the next step arrived.

I could wait for guidance.

I could ask for clarification when I needed it.

And I could keep my attention on Lily rather than on the story my mind was trying to build around the unknown parts.

I lowered my eyes to her hand.

The small fingers were still resting against my sweater.

I thought about how many times she had reached for me without needing to explain what she wanted.

Sometimes she needed help.

Sometimes she wanted comfort.

Sometimes she simply wanted to be close.

I had never required a full explanation before taking her hand.

I did not need to begin doing that now.

I could be present without demanding words.

I could let her know through my actions that she did not have to manage my feelings.

I could keep my own questions for the adults and professionals who could help me understand them.

The phone remained unanswered.

That decision was not a final statement about Daniel.

It was a choice about what I needed to focus on in that moment.

I could return to the question of communication when I had more guidance.

I could consider what needed to be said and how to say it carefully.

I could do that without allowing urgency to make me careless.

For the first time in a while, I stopped checking the screen.

I did not turn away from it because I had decided it meant nothing.

I turned my attention back to Lily because she was the person beside me, and she needed me to be present.

I took another slow breath.

I did not know what the evaluation would reveal.

I did not know what Daniel would say when we spoke.

I did not know how long it would take before the situation made sense.

But I knew I could keep listening.

I knew I could follow the guidance of the medical team.

I knew I could take my daughter's fear seriously without forcing her to explain more than she was ready to explain.

And I knew that I did not have to make uncertainty disappear before I could take the next careful step.

So I stayed beside her.

I let the unanswered questions remain unanswered.

For now, I chose to listen before deciding what they meant.
