13 – I Kept Looking at the Phone, Wondering How Much of Our Ordinary Life I Had Taken for Granted

I stayed beside Lily and tried to keep my attention on the things I could actually see.

Her small hand rested against my sweater.

The phone remained close enough for me to notice every time the screen changed.

I wanted to turn it facedown.

I wanted to move it somewhere I couldn't see it.

Instead, I left it where it was.

Part of me was afraid that if I stopped looking, I might miss something important.

Another part was afraid of what I might find if I looked again.

I had never thought of a phone as something that could make an ordinary room feel different.

Before that day, Daniel's name appearing on my screen would have meant something familiar.

It might have meant he was checking whether we needed anything from the store.

It might have meant he wanted to know when we would be home.

Sometimes he called just to ask what Lily had eaten or whether she had finished getting ready for bed.

Those questions had once seemed ordinary.

Now I kept returning to the same two messages.

Why aren't you answering?

Where are you?

Then the one about Lily needing to be in bed and my making everything dramatic.

I read them again without touching the screen.

I couldn't make them mean more than they said.

I also couldn't pretend they sounded the same to me as they would have sounded the day before.

That difference frightened me.

I wondered whether I was reading too much into the words because I was already frightened.

I wondered whether fear had made every sentence sound sharper than it was intended to be.

I wanted to be fair.

I had spent years believing that fairness meant giving someone the benefit of the doubt.

I still believed that mattered.

But I was beginning to understand that giving someone the benefit of the doubt did not require me to ignore what was happening in front of me.

Lily was beside me.

She had been frightened enough to ask me not to let her go home with her father.

I could not erase those words simply because I was uncomfortable with what they might mean.

I could not turn them into something harmless just because Daniel was the person I had expected to spend my life with.

I looked down at Lily.

She was quiet.

I didn't ask her what she was thinking.

I didn't ask whether she was still afraid.

I remembered what Dr. Lawson had told me about letting trained professionals guide the conversation.

The doctor had been careful with every word.

I wanted to be just as careful.

For a moment, I wished someone would tell me exactly what I was supposed to do next.

I wanted a list.

I wanted instructions that would leave no room for a mistake.

Keep her here.

Answer this question.

Don't answer that call.

Say these words.

Avoid those words.

But the situation wasn't a list of simple choices.

I had to make decisions while knowing that I didn't understand everything.

That was harder than I wanted to admit.

I had always thought that being a mother meant knowing when something was wrong.

I had imagined that instinct would arrive clearly, like an alarm I couldn't mistake for anything else.

Instead, I was sitting with a phone in front of me, trying to separate fear from judgment.

I was trying to remember what the doctor had said.

I was trying not to turn every memory of Daniel into evidence for or against him.

And I was trying not to make Lily responsible for helping me decide what to believe.

She was six.

She should not have had to carry the weight of my uncertainty.

She should not have needed to explain herself in a way that made me comfortable.

I could love her without asking her to prove that she needed my help.

I could listen without demanding that she tell me everything at once.

That seemed simple when I put it into words.

It was much harder when my mind kept reaching for answers.

I looked at the phone again.

Daniel's name was still there.

I imagined answering the call and hearing his familiar voice.

I imagined him asking where we were.

I imagined myself trying to explain why we had gone to the hospital without knowing how much I should say.

I imagined him becoming upset.

Then I imagined him sounding confused.

I couldn't know which version of that conversation would happen.

I had not answered, so I had no new information.

All I had were the messages and the questions they had raised.

I reminded myself of that distinction.

A question was not an answer.

A suspicion was not proof.

But uncertainty was not a reason to abandon caution, either.

I could hold all three thoughts at once.

I could refuse to accuse Daniel of something I did not know.

I could refuse to dismiss Lily's fear.

And I could follow the medical team's guidance while I waited to understand more.

For the first time that day, I felt as though I had found one small thing I could do correctly.

I didn't need to solve everything immediately.

I needed to stay present.

I needed to keep my voice steady when I spoke to Lily.

I needed to let the people trained to help children do their work.

And I needed to stop treating every unanswered question as something I had personally failed to answer.

I rested my hand near Lily's.

She moved closer.

I didn't tell her that everything would be fine.

I wanted to say it.

The words rose naturally, the way they always had when she was upset about a scraped knee or a bad dream.

But I couldn't promise an outcome I didn't know.

So I stayed beside her.

For that moment, I let being there be enough.

I thought about the crib Daniel had helped assemble.

I remembered the way he had checked the screws and tested the rails before we put Lily down for the first time.

I remembered his excitement when we brought her home.

Those memories were real.

They were part of our life.

But they did not tell me what I needed to know now.

I had to stop asking the past to answer questions it had never been asked.

The phone vibrated again, and my attention went straight to it.

My stomach tightened before I even looked.

I hated that reaction.

I hated that a familiar sound could make me feel as though I needed to prepare myself.

I glanced at the screen.

I did not reach for it immediately.

I looked at Lily first.

She remained close to me.

I didn't want my own fear to become another thing she had to manage.

I took a slow breath.

Then I looked back at the phone.

I still did not know what Daniel understood about our situation.

I still did not know why he had described my actions as dramatic.

I didn't know whether his words came from frustration, confusion, or something else.

I had no honest way to decide.

So I left those questions unanswered.

Not forever.

Just for now.

There would be time to consider what to say when I knew more about what Lily needed and what the medical team advised.

I did not have to respond simply because a message had arrived.

I did not have to make a decision just because someone else wanted an immediate answer.

I had spent a long time believing that a delayed response was a form of disrespect.

That day, I began to understand that there were moments when waiting was the more responsible choice.

Lily needed me to think carefully.

She needed me to listen.

She needed me not to rush her into explaining something she might not be ready to explain.

I could do those things without knowing the entire truth.

I could begin there.

And for the moment, I did.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: The
