12 – I Had No Way to Know What the Evaluation Would Reveal, but I Finally Understood That Protecting Lily Meant Letting Her Fear Be Taken Seriously

I used to think that the hardest part of parenting was knowing when to say no.

When Lily was younger, the decisions had seemed straightforward.

I had to keep her away from things that could hurt her.

I had to make sure she ate, slept, and received the care she needed.

I had to teach her that the world had rules and that some rules existed for her protection.

I had thought those responsibilities would become easier as she grew older.

I hadn't expected that one of the hardest decisions would involve listening to her when I didn't understand what she was trying to tell me.

That was where I found myself now.

Lily was six.

She depended on adults to interpret the world around her.

She trusted us to make decisions she wasn't old enough to make for herself.

That trust was a responsibility I couldn't take lightly.

I couldn't assume that her fear would disappear if I waited long enough.

I couldn't assume that she was frightened for a reason I already understood.

And I couldn't assume that I would discover the truth simply by asking enough questions.

I had to allow the professionals to help.

Dr. Lawson had made that clear.

The pediatric team would continue evaluating Lily, and a child-protection specialist could speak with her in a suitable, supportive setting.

The purpose was to understand what was happening without adding pressure or confusion.

I needed to cooperate with that process.

I also needed to recognize how much I wanted to control it.

I wanted to know what the specialist would ask.

I wanted to know how Lily would respond.

I wanted to know when we would have an explanation.

Those questions came from fear.

They came from the part of me that believed I could protect my daughter if I knew enough.

But knowledge didn't always arrive when I wanted it.

Sometimes the responsible choice was to let the people with the right training take the lead.

That meant accepting a role I hadn't expected.

I had to support Lily without trying to direct every part of the process.

I had to remain available without turning every moment into an opportunity to question her.

I had to be honest about what I knew and what I didn't.

That last part was especially difficult.

I had always wanted to be the person Lily could turn to for answers.

I wanted her to see me as someone who could make sense of a confusing situation.

Now I had to show her that I could admit when I needed help.

I hoped that wouldn't make me seem less capable in her eyes.

Then I remembered that she was six.

She didn't need a mother who pretended to know everything.

She needed one who would take her seriously when something frightened her.

I could be that mother.

I could stay beside her.

I could listen.

I could make sure she received appropriate care.

I could follow the doctor's instructions even when my own anxiety pushed me toward a different response.

Those were things I could do right now.

I couldn't change the fact that the situation had become frightening.

I couldn't erase the messages from my phone.

I couldn't return to the moment before Lily had asked me not to send her home with her father.

I could only decide what to do with the information I had.

That was enough to begin.

I thought about Daniel.

I still had questions about his reaction.

I still couldn't explain why he had focused on bedtime and my supposed overreaction before I had told him what was happening.

I wasn't ready to decide what those messages meant.

I knew that a careful evaluation mattered more than my assumptions.

I would not turn suspicion into certainty.

I would not turn affection into an excuse to dismiss Lily.

Both choices would have been easier than remaining patient.

Neither would have helped me understand the situation.

I had to resist the temptation to choose whichever explanation caused me less pain.

I had to wait for what could actually be established.

That was the promise I made to myself.

I would listen to Lily.

I would follow the guidance of the professionals helping her.

I would keep an open mind without treating her distress as unimportant.

And I would not force a conclusion simply because uncertainty was difficult to bear.

I looked at my daughter again.

I couldn't know what she would remember from this day.

I couldn't know how the situation would affect our family.

I couldn't know what decisions I would have to make once the evaluation continued.

Those were questions for another moment.

Right now, Lily needed me to remain present.

I wanted to tell her that everything would be all right.

The words rose naturally in my mind.

I had said them to her so many times before.

But I stopped myself from making a promise about an outcome I couldn't guarantee.

Instead, I stayed close.

I let her know through my presence that she wasn't alone.

It seemed less comforting than the words I wanted to say.

It was also more honest.

I had spent much of the day searching for a sentence that would make my fear disappear.

There wasn't one.

I had wanted the doctor to explain everything.

I had wanted Daniel's messages to make immediate sense.

I had wanted Lily to tell me exactly what had happened so I could decide what to do.

But the truth wasn't something I could force into place.

I had to give it room to emerge.

That was the hardest lesson of the day.

I couldn't protect Lily by deciding in advance what her fear meant.

I couldn't protect her by defending the family I thought I knew.

I couldn't protect her by rushing the people who were trying to help.

I could protect her by taking the situation seriously and allowing the evaluation to continue.

I could protect her by refusing to make her feel guilty for being frightened.

I could protect her by accepting that my responsibility was larger than my need to feel certain.

I didn't know what the next stage would bring.

I didn't know whether the answers would reassure me or force me to reconsider everything.

But I knew I couldn't make those answers easier by avoiding the questions.

I looked away from the phone and returned my attention to Lily.

For once, I stopped trying to prepare myself for every possible outcome.

I focused on the decision directly in front of me.

I would remain with my daughter.

I would follow the medical team's guidance.

And I would let the trained professionals help us understand what she was experiencing.

I had wanted certainty before I acted.

Now I understood that I could act responsibly without it.

That was where I had to begin.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: I Kept Looking at the Phone, Wondering How
