9 – I Wanted Someone to Tell Me My Daughter Would Be Fine, but I Was Beginning to Understand Why Nobody Could Promise Me That Yet

I kept looking at the door whenever someone passed outside.

I wasn't waiting for Daniel anymore.

At least, that was what I told myself.

I was waiting for someone who could explain what we were supposed to do next.

The distinction mattered to me.

Daniel was Lily's father, and I couldn't erase six years of family life because of one frightening day.

But I couldn't go back to treating everything as ordinary, either.

I had to live somewhere between those two truths.

It was uncomfortable.

I had never been good at waiting for answers when someone I loved was hurting.

I wanted to fix things.

I wanted to make a plan, follow it, and see the problem disappear.

That was how I had handled most difficulties in my adult life.

This was different.

My daughter needed more than a quick solution.

She needed adults who could take their time, listen carefully, and avoid making assumptions about what she was experiencing.

I had finally accepted that I couldn't do all of that by myself.

Still, accepting it didn't make the waiting easier.

I watched Lily's face.

I tried not to study every expression as if it might contain a hidden explanation.

I didn't want her to feel that she was being examined by her own mother.

She had already shown me that she was frightened.

She didn't need to see me searching her face for proof of something.

I wanted her to feel that she could simply be a child beside me.

That seemed like such a small thing to ask.

Yet I had to remind myself to do it.

My phone remained nearby.

I could feel its presence even when I wasn't looking at it.

Every time I heard a vibration from somewhere in the hospital, I wondered whether Daniel was trying to reach me again.

I didn't want his messages to control my attention.

I also knew I couldn't avoid communicating with him forever.

He was part of Lily's life.

Whatever happened next, we would have to deal with the practical questions that came with being her parents.

But I didn't have to settle those questions in the middle of my fear.

I could wait until I had guidance.

I could make sure the medical team knew what was happening.

I could follow their recommendations instead of trying to manage the entire situation alone.

Those were the responsibilities in front of me.

I kept returning to them whenever my thoughts began to run ahead.

I remembered Dr. Lawson's explanation about the child-protection specialist.

The specialist would know how to speak with Lily without leading her toward particular answers.

I needed to respect that process.

I had spent too much time thinking about the questions I wanted to ask.

I hadn't fully considered how those questions might affect my daughter.

I could imagine myself asking the same thing in different ways, hoping that one version would finally make everything clear.

That might have made me feel as though I was doing something useful.

It wouldn't necessarily have helped her.

I had to let go of the idea that my need to understand gave me the right to keep questioning her.

The professionals could guide the conversation.

My responsibility was to make sure Lily knew she wasn't in trouble.

I wished I had understood that sooner.

I wished I could have removed the fear from her face simply by sitting beside her.

But love wasn't a switch I could turn on to make everything better.

Sometimes love meant staying with someone while the answer remained unknown.

I looked down at my hands.

They had finally stopped trembling as much.

I hadn't noticed until I saw how tightly I had been holding them together.

I loosened my fingers.

The small movement reminded me that I was still here, still capable of making careful decisions, even though I felt overwhelmed.

I didn't need to be fearless.

I needed to remain steady enough to help my daughter.

That was a more realistic responsibility.

I had been measuring myself against an impossible standard.

I thought a good mother would know immediately what was wrong and what to do.

Now I understood that a good mother could also recognize when she needed help.

That recognition didn't make me weak.

It made me responsible for something larger than my own pride.

I thought about Daniel's messages again.

I still couldn't explain why he had focused on bedtime and my supposed overreaction.

Maybe he had misunderstood what was happening.

Maybe he was reacting to the fact that I wasn't answering.

I had no way to know.

I wasn't going to turn uncertainty into a verdict.

But I also wasn't going to apologize for taking Lily's distress seriously.

For years, I had tried to make difficult moments easier by explaining myself quickly.

I wanted Daniel to understand my intentions before he became upset.

That habit had made some disagreements shorter.

It had also taught me to spend too much time defending my decisions.

This time, I had made a decision because my daughter needed help.

I didn't need to apologize for seeking it.

I could explain what had happened when I was ready and when doing so was appropriate.

Until then, I would follow the medical team's guidance.

I looked at Lily again.

She was still the reason I had come this far.

I couldn't promise her that nothing difficult would happen.

I couldn't promise that every adult would understand her.

But I could refuse to make her feel responsible for the uncertainty surrounding us.

I could let her know, through my actions, that she had done nothing wrong by being afraid.

I could stay.

And I could wait for the next step without trying to force it into existence.

That was what I chose to do.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: I Had Spent Years
