2 – I Wanted to Believe My Daughter Was Simply Overwhelmed, but Every Attempt to Reassure Her Left Me With More Questions Than Answers

I kept my attention on Lily.

I didn't want her to think I was angry with her or disappointed in the way she was reacting.

She was six years old.

Whatever she was feeling, she needed an adult to help her through it.

She didn't need me making her feel guilty for being afraid.

I had to remind myself of that because part of me wanted to restore normality as quickly as possible.

Normality was familiar.

It was the place where Daniel was simply Lily's father, and I was simply her mother.

It was the place where a difficult afternoon didn't have to mean anything more than a difficult afternoon.

But Lily's reaction wouldn't let me return to that comfortable explanation.

She remained close to me.

I could tell she was paying attention to everything around us.

The smallest movement seemed to make her tense.

I tried to keep my own movements slow and gentle.

I didn't want to overwhelm her.

I also didn't want to make promises I couldn't keep.

Before that day, I might have told her that everything would be fine.

I might have reminded her that she had nothing to worry about.

Those words had always seemed harmless to me.

Now I understood that I couldn't honestly say them without knowing what was happening.

So I stayed with what I could offer.

I could listen.

I could take her seriously.

I could make sure she wasn't left alone with feelings she couldn't explain.

That didn't feel like much.

It was all I knew how to do.

I kept thinking about Daniel.

I tried to remember whether anything had changed recently.

Had I noticed something different in Lily's behavior?

Had she seemed unusually quiet?

Had there been a moment when she looked uncomfortable and I had dismissed it because I was busy?

I searched my memory for something that would make the situation easier to understand.

Nothing came together into a clear answer.

I couldn't point to one moment and say, That was when everything changed.

Maybe that was part of what frightened me.

I wanted a neat explanation.

I wanted a single event that would make sense of Lily's fear and tell me exactly what I should do next.

Instead, I had a frightened little girl and a growing sense that I needed professional help.

I couldn't solve this by guessing.

I couldn't solve it by deciding what I wanted to believe.

And I couldn't solve it by making Lily repeat herself until I felt satisfied with her answer.

I was her mother, not an investigator.

That distinction mattered, even though I hadn't fully understood it yet.

I knew that asking questions could feel like pressure.

I knew that children sometimes struggled to describe experiences that frightened or confused them.

I didn't want to put words into Lily's mouth.

I didn't want her to feel that she had to tell me a particular story to earn my protection.

Most of all, I didn't want my own fear to become another burden she had to carry.

So I tried to remain calm.

It was harder than it sounds.

My mind kept jumping ahead to possibilities I wasn't ready to face.

Then I would pull myself back to the present.

Lily was here.

She needed me here with her.

That was the only thing I could be certain of.

I thought about Daniel's role in our family.

He had been there for so many of Lily's milestones that I could hardly separate the memories from the image I had formed of him.

I remembered the photographs.

I remembered the way he had looked when she first began walking.

I remembered believing that the hardest part of parenting would be learning how to balance everything.

I had never expected to find myself questioning whether I understood the person standing on the other side of that bond.

That thought made me feel disloyal.

I didn't like admitting it, but I had been afraid of doubting Daniel before I had any clear reason to do so.

I didn't want to accuse him unfairly.

I didn't want to damage our family based on an incomplete understanding of what Lily was feeling.

Those concerns were real.

But they couldn't be allowed to silence her.

Looking back, I can see how easily a person can confuse fairness with hesitation.

I had wanted to be fair to Daniel.

I had also wanted to avoid a painful truth if one existed.

Those were not the same thing.

At the time, I was still struggling to tell them apart.

Lily's hand remained against me.

I looked at her and felt the weight of the decision in front of me.

I didn't have proof of anything.

I didn't have a complete explanation.

But I didn't need to invent one in order to recognize that she was distressed.

I could take her feelings seriously without deciding what had caused them.

That was the difference I needed to understand.

I stopped trying to find a reassuring explanation before I acted.

I needed someone trained to help children in situations like this.

Someone who could assess what was happening without relying on my assumptions.

Someone who would know how to speak with Lily without leading her toward an answer.

I didn't know what the professionals would discover.

That uncertainty frightened me.

Still, it was better than pretending I could figure everything out by myself.

I wanted to be the kind of mother who protected her daughter.

I had always believed I was that mother.

Now I had to prove it through a decision that might change the way I understood my entire family.

I took a breath.

I stayed close to Lily.

And I accepted that the next step had to be about what she needed, not about what would make me feel less afraid.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Doctor Explained Why I Should Let the
