They become tired, stubborn, and overwhelmed without knowing how to explain what is happening inside them.

I had told myself that plenty of times.

It was easier than admitting I didn't always understand my own daughter.

But Lily wasn't throwing a tantrum.

She wasn't asking for another bedtime story or trying to get out of something she didn't want to do.

She was scared.

And she wanted me to listen.

I remember the way her little fingers curled around my clothes.

She held on so tightly that I could feel the fabric pulling against my skin.

Her face was pale, and she kept looking toward the door as though she expected someone to walk through it.

I had never seen her look at her father that way before.

At least, I had never allowed myself to recognize it.

Daniel had been part of Lily's life since the day she was born.

He had helped prepare the nursery, assembled her crib, and spent hours taking pictures when she was learning to walk.

He was there for the ordinary things that make up a child's early years.

First words.

First steps.

First days of school.

I had photographs of him holding Lily against his chest, smiling down at her while she slept.

When I looked at those pictures, I saw a father who loved his daughter.

I wanted to believe that picture told the whole story.

It didn't.

I just hadn't understood that a photograph could capture a moment without explaining everything that happened before or after it.

That day, I was standing beside my daughter, trying to understand why she was pleading with me.

I asked her what was wrong.

She didn't give me the explanation I desperately wanted.

She only clung to me harder.

I tried to keep my voice calm because I thought she might become more frightened if she saw how worried I was.

I told myself that mothers were supposed to remain steady in moments like this.

But inside, I was falling apart.

I wanted to make the right decision.

The problem was that I didn't yet know what the right decision looked like.

Daniel was her father.

I was her mother.

And Lily was caught between two adults who were supposed to make her feel safe.

I had never imagined that I would have to question what safety meant inside our own family.

For a long time, I had believed our biggest problems were ordinary ones.

Work schedules.

Household responsibilities.

The endless negotiations that came with raising a young child.

Daniel and I didn't agree about everything, but I had thought those disagreements were normal.

We were tired parents trying to keep a family running.

That was the explanation I always returned to.

It made everything seem manageable.

It also meant I was unprepared when Lily's fear became impossible to ignore.

I looked at her face and waited for her to settle.

She didn't.

Every time I tried to move, she moved with me.

Every time I looked away, her fingers tightened.

I could see the effort she was making to stay close.

She wasn't simply asking for comfort.

She seemed to believe that letting go of me would mean something terrible was about to happen.

That frightened me more than I wanted to admit.

I thought about all the times I had told her that her father would take care of her.

I had said those words without hesitation.

I had said them because I believed them.

Now, I didn't know what to say.

I wanted to ask a hundred questions.

I wanted to understand what had made her so afraid.

But I was also terrified that I might ask the wrong thing.

What if I misunderstood her?

What if I made her fear worse?

What if there was a simple explanation and I turned it into something it wasn't?

Those questions kept circling in my mind.

Then another thought appeared, quieter but harder to ignore.

What if I had been so determined to believe everything was fine that I had missed something important?

I looked down at Lily.

She was watching me.

Waiting.

I could see that she needed me to make a decision, even though I didn't have enough information to understand the situation.

I had spent years believing that love meant knowing what to do.

That day taught me that sometimes love meant admitting I didn't know.

And refusing to pretend otherwise.

I stayed beside her.

I listened to her breathing.

I felt her small hand gripping my clothes.

For the first time, I stopped trying to convince myself that she would eventually calm down if I simply handled things the way I always had.

Something was wrong enough that I needed help understanding it.

I didn't know what the answer would be.

I only knew that Lily was asking me for protection, and I couldn't ignore her just because I was afraid of what her words might mean.

I had spent six years believing I understood my family.

Now I had to consider the possibility that I didn't.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: I Wanted to Believe My Daughter Was Simply Overwhelmed, but Every Attempt
