I pushed the pages gently toward him.<\/p>\n

He looked at the document as though it had betrayed him.<\/p>\n
\u201cI spent time putting this together.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI can see that.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd now you're rejecting it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI'm asking you to revise it or have a qualified professional explain what a proper arrangement would involve.\u201d<\/p>\n
He took a long breath.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou could just trust me.\u201d<\/p>\n
I felt the old temptation to reassure him.<\/p>\n
I could have said I trusted him completely.<\/p>\n
It might have ended the conversation more quickly.<\/p>\n
But it would have been a promise I wasn't ready to make.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to be able to trust you,\u201d I said. \u201cThat is why I'm asking you to be clear.\u201d<\/p>\n
He looked away.<\/p>\n
I gathered the pages and straightened their edges.<\/p>\n
