That's why I'm asking."

She was quiet.

Then she admitted that she didn't know exactly what Jordan wanted.

He had spoken confidently.

He had said he was trying to protect the family.

He had suggested that it would be better to act before something went wrong.

But he hadn't explained what specific action he expected us to take.

That answer troubled me.

I asked whether he had shown her any documents.

She said he had mentioned that there were ways to organize financial responsibilities, but they hadn't reviewed anything together.

I asked whether he had spoken to a lawyer or financial adviser.

She didn't know.

I asked whether he had suggested that I sign something.

She said he had mentioned paperwork in general.

Nothing more specific.

I listened carefully.

Pam wasn't giving me evidence of a definite plan to take my money.

She was describing a series of conversations in which Jordan had made her feel that action was necessary, without clearly explaining what that action should be.

I didn't want to turn uncertainty into an accusation.

But I could no longer ignore the effect those conversations were having.

Pam was becoming anxious about my financial decisions.

Jordan was using that anxiety to keep the subject alive.

And I was being asked to consider arrangements I had never requested.

I told Pam that I wanted any discussion about our finances to remain between us unless we both agreed that professional advice was needed.

She asked whether I didn't trust Jordan.

I took a breath.

"Trust isn't the only issue. He made a serious accusation about me and couldn't explain where it came from. I haven't forgotten that."

She looked hurt.

I understood why.

Jordan was her son.

She wanted to believe he had good intentions.

But I couldn't pretend his earlier behavior had never happened simply because she wanted to move forward.

I told her I wasn't asking her to choose between us.

I was asking her to judge what had happened honestly.

She nodded, although I couldn't tell whether she agreed.

The conversation ended quietly.

I spent the afternoon reviewing my plans.

I wanted to make sure the sale proceeds were managed responsibly.

I wanted to decide what kind of retirement I would enjoy.

And I wanted to avoid making financial decisions while angry or frightened.

I had enough experience to know that fear could lead people into bad agreements.

I wasn't going to let that happen to me.

That evening, Jordan asked whether we could talk.

I agreed.

We sat in the living room, and he began by saying that he understood why I might be uncomfortable discussing money.

He said he wasn't trying to interfere.

He said he only wanted to make sure the family was prepared.

I listened.

Then I asked him a simple question.

"What exactly do you think needs to be done?"

He paused.

He said we needed to make sure everything was organized.

I asked what that meant.

He mentioned accounts.

I asked which accounts.

He mentioned paperwork.

I asked what paperwork.

He said he hadn't worked out all the details.

I looked at him.

"Then what are you asking me to agree to?"

He shifted in his chair.

He said he wasn't asking me to agree to anything immediately.

He only wanted me to consider the possibility.

I told him I was willing to consider reasonable suggestions.

But I would not agree to a financial arrangement without understanding its purpose, its terms, and who would benefit from it.

He said that was fair.

Then I asked him about the gambling accusation.

His face changed.

I reminded him that he had told Pam I was in financial trouble.

I reminded him that he had mentioned Oklahoma.

I reminded him that he had been unable to provide a source or any evidence.

I asked whether he had ever discovered that the story was false.

He said he had never found anything to support it.

I asked why he had continued discussing my finances after that.

He looked at the floor.

"I was worried about the future."

"Whose future?"

He looked up.

"The family's."

I nodded slowly.

Then I asked whether he understood that my future was part of that family too.

He said he did.

I told him that protecting me meant listening to what I wanted, not deciding what I should do before asking me.

He didn't respond.

For a moment, I thought he might apologize.

Instead, he said he didn't want us to keep arguing.

I told him neither did I.

"But we can't move forward by pretending nothing happened."

He nodded.

The conversation ended there.

I wasn't satisfied.

But I had learned something important.

Jordan wanted us to discuss financial arrangements, yet he still couldn't explain what he wanted me to do.

He spoke about protection without defining the danger.

He spoke about preparation without identifying the problem.

And he wanted the family to act before I made decisions on my own.

I had heard enough to remain cautious.

I still couldn't say what his ultimate intention was.

I couldn't say whether Pam was helping him knowingly or simply trusting her son.

But I could see that the situation had moved beyond a misunderstanding about gambling.

It was now about who had the right to make decisions about my future.

And I wasn't going to let that question be settled through vague promises or pressure.

After Jordan left the room, I sat alone for a while.

I thought about the younger man I had been when I first started building the storage business.

He had worked long hours because he wanted a life in which he could make his own decisions.

He hadn't known whether the business would succeed.

He hadn't known whether the years of effort would ever produce anything more than enough money to pay the bills.

But he had kept going.

And now, at sixty-nine, I had reached the point where I could finally choose how to spend my time.

I wasn't going to give that freedom away without a very good reason.

The next morning, I decided that if Jordan brought up financial paperwork again, I would ask him to put his proposal in writing.

Not because I wanted to trap him.

Because clear terms were better than vague conversations.

If he had a sensible suggestion, I could review it.

If he didn't, I would know that there was nothing concrete to consider.

Either way, I would no longer be expected to make decisions based on hints and uneasy feelings.

That seemed fair.

It was also the only way I knew to move forward without letting suspicion control every part of my life.

<a
