His attorney had responded to some of them, but several entries remained unclear.

We were not going to resolve every question at the next hearing.

I understood that now.

I also knew the court would need to consider the custody arrangements separately from the financial dispute.

I wanted the judge to understand both issues without allowing either one to swallow the other.

On Monday evening, Maya asked why I was ironing a blouse.

“Because I have to go to court tomorrow.”

She stopped coloring.

“Again?”

“Yes, sweetheart.”

“Will I have to go?”

“Not unless the people helping us say they need you there.”

She looked relieved.

I set the iron aside and sat beside her.

“You can go to school tomorrow. You can think about your own things.”

“What if they talk about me?”

“The adults may discuss what arrangements are best for you. But you don't have to solve anything for us.”

She studied the drawing in front of her.

Then she asked the question I had been dreading.

“Does Daddy think I'm bad?”

I felt my throat tighten.

“Why would you think that?”

She shrugged.

“He didn't look happy when I showed the video.”

I took her hand.

“Daddy may have had strong feelings about what happened. But that doesn't mean you are bad.”

“Is he mad at you because of me?”

“No.”

I said it firmly because I wanted her to hear it without doubt.

“Your parents are responsible for their own choices. You did not cause our problems.”

She nodded, but I could tell the answer had not erased her worry.

I wanted to tell her that everything would be fine.

I wanted to promise that no one would ever make her feel caught between us again.

I could not honestly promise either thing.

So I promised what I could.

“I will listen when you need to talk. And I'll make sure you have people you can talk to besides me.”

She leaned against my shoulder.

That night, I checked her backpack and put her library book near the front door.

Then I left the ironed blouse hanging on the closet door.

I did not open the financial folder again.

On Tuesday morning, my attorney met me outside the courthouse.

She carried a slim briefcase and a copy of the latest filings.

“You know the questions,” she said. “Answer only what you're asked.”

“I will.”

“And remember that the judge is looking at the whole situation, not just the documents.”

I nodded.

Inside, Julian was already seated beside his attorney.

He glanced at me and looked away.

Judge Thorne entered a few minutes later.

After the hearing began, our attorneys addressed the remaining financial questions.

Julian's side had provided additional explanations for some of the expenses.

A few supporting documents had also been supplied.

My attorney acknowledged what had been received.

She then identified the entries for which the documentation still did not clearly establish the purpose of the payment.

Julian's attorney said his client believed the expenses were legitimate business costs.

Judge Thorne looked at him.

“Then the supporting records should help establish that.”

The response was not dramatic.

No one raised a voice.

But the judge's question changed the room.

Julian shifted in his chair.

His attorney asked for additional time to gather the remaining material.

My attorney objected to an open-ended delay but agreed that a short, specific deadline was reasonable.

Judge Thorne set one.

I wrote down the date even though it was already in the court's notes.

It helped to have something concrete in front of me.

A deadline was not an answer.

But it meant the question could not simply disappear.

The judge then turned to the issue of custody.

Julian's attorney repeated that I had not been earning the same income I once had.

He argued that financial uncertainty was relevant to my ability to provide stability.

My attorney explained that I had left my former position to care for Maya and that my current financial circumstances had to be considered alongside the care I had provided.

She also addressed the joint account and the canceled cards.

She did not claim that those facts alone determined custody.

She argued that the court should consider the practical effect of the financial decisions on my ability to meet Maya's needs.

Judge Thorne asked both sides about housing, school, and the arrangements for daily care.

I answered questions about Maya's routine.

I described her school schedule, her bedtime, and the activities she enjoyed.

I explained who helped with pickups when I had appointments.

I tried to keep my answers simple.

The judge asked whether Maya had been exposed to conflict between her parents.

I paused.

I could have listed every argument Julian and I had ever had.

I could have described the times he dismissed my questions or accused me of being difficult.

But the question was about Maya.

“Yes,” I said. “She has been aware that we are having problems. I'm trying to keep the legal discussions away from her.”

“Has she been asked to take sides?”

I chose my words carefully.

“I know she has been worried about upsetting either of us. I cannot say everything she has heard when she isn't with me.”

Judge Thorne made a note.

“I appreciate the distinction.”

For the first time that morning, I felt I had answered a difficult question without feeling compelled to defend my entire life.

The judge discussed the importance of keeping Maya's routine as stable as possible.

He also directed both parents to avoid discussing the financial dispute or the courtroom recording with her.

Neither parent was to ask her to explain or defend what she had shown.

I looked down at my hands.

That direction mattered more to me than I could express.

I wanted Maya to be allowed to be six years old.

The hearing continued with questions about the proposed parenting arrangements.

No final custody order was issued.

The judge said he needed to consider the information presented and the remaining financial disclosures.

He also wanted the parties to continue working through their attorneys rather than using Maya as a messenger.

When the hearing ended, I gathered my notes.

Julian stood near the doorway.

For a moment, I thought he might speak to me.

Instead, he turned toward his attorney.

I left without approaching him.

Outside, my attorney explained the next steps.

We would review the additional financial material when it arrived.

The custody question remained open.

There would be no immediate change to the existing arrangements while the court considered the matter.

I listened and wrote down the dates.

I did not ask whether we were winning.

I was beginning to understand that the case was not a contest with a single moment when everything became clear.

It was a series of decisions made from evidence, one after another.

That afternoon, I picked Maya up from school.

She came running out with a paper folded in half.

“Look what we made!”

It was a picture of a tree with bright leaves.

I praised the colors, and she explained which leaves she had drawn first.

She did not ask about the hearing.

I did not bring it up.

On the way home, she asked if we could make pancakes for dinner.

I told her we could.

At home, she stood on a chair and helped me stir the batter.

Flour dusted the counter.

A little batter landed on her sleeve.

She laughed and tried to wipe it away with a paper towel.

For a few minutes, the only thing I needed to think about was whether the pan was hot enough.

When we sat down to eat, Maya looked at me across the table.

“Are you okay, Mom?”

I smiled.

“I'm tired, but I'm okay.”

“Because of court?”

“Partly.”

She considered that, then took another bite.

“I liked making pancakes better.”

“So did I.”

And for that evening, we let that be enough.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: Julian Asked for More Time With Maya, and I Had to Show the Court That Protecting Her Was Not the Same as Keeping Her From Him

The next court date was set for a Tuesday morning.
