But this isn't just work for you.”

She was right.

I had reviewed thousands of pages in my former career.

I had learned to keep my feelings separate from the calculations.

But these records belonged to my husband.

The questions affected my home, my savings, and my daughter's future.

I went to my attorney's office that afternoon.

She had arranged the pages in several folders.

The first contained account statements.

The second contained invoices and expense descriptions.

The third held supporting documents that Julian's side said related to the disputed payments.

We started with the list of transactions we had already identified.

I checked each amount against the records.

Some entries matched the statements we had.

Some documents added information we had not previously seen.

Others did not answer the questions we had asked.

I resisted the urge to jump ahead.

We worked one transaction at a time.

The first payment had a supporting invoice.

The invoice described a service, but it did not provide much detail about the work performed.

I marked it for further clarification.

The next payment had a more complete description.

I compared the date and amount with the account statement.

They matched.

That did not mean every part of the transaction had been independently verified, but the document supported the recorded expense.

I noted that distinction.

My attorney watched me write.

“That's the kind of wording we need,” she said.

I continued.

Some records were ordinary.

Others remained difficult to interpret.

The consulting expenses still raised questions because the supporting material varied in detail.

A few descriptions were broad enough that I could not tell what work had been done from the documents alone.

I did not label them false.

I wrote that the available records did not establish the purpose of the payments clearly enough for me to verify them.

It was a narrow statement.

It was also the truth.

For years, Julian had made me feel that asking questions meant I did not trust him.

Now I was sitting in an office with the documents in front of me, and the questions were still there.

I did not need to turn them into accusations.

I needed answers.

My attorney asked me to identify which records were missing and which were present but unclear.

I created a separate list.

For each transaction, I wrote the date, the amount, the description in the statement, and the supporting document provided.

Then I added one line describing what remained unresolved.

It was slower than writing a single conclusion.

It was much more useful.

One expense had been described as a consulting fee, but the invoice did not identify a specific deliverable.

Another had a description that appeared to refer to business services, yet the documents supplied did not show enough detail to establish the exact work performed.

I highlighted those entries.

I also marked the transactions for which the paperwork was more complete.

I did not want to hide information that complicated my concerns.

If a document supported Julian's explanation, it belonged in the file.

If it did not answer the question, that belonged there, too.

By the time we finished the first review, my eyes hurt.

My attorney suggested we stop and return to the remaining records later.

I wanted to continue.

There were still pages I had not examined.

But I agreed to take a break.

On the walk home, I thought about the video.

I had wanted it to explain everything.

Part of me had hoped the judge would watch it and immediately understand what Julian had done.

But a recording could show a conversation without answering every question surrounding it.

The financial documents could establish certain facts while leaving other matters unresolved.

Neither source could replace the work of careful examination.

I had to accept that.

At home, Maya was drawing at the kitchen table.

She had arranged her crayons in a row and was coloring a picture of a house.

“That's a big window,” I said.

She nodded.

“So I can see outside.”

I looked at the drawing.

The house had a bright front door and a tree beside it.

There were two figures in front of the house, one taller than the other.

“Is that us?”

“It's just a house,” she said.

Then she added a small rabbit near the door.

I smiled.

“That's a very good rabbit.”

She went back to coloring.

I made dinner while she told me about her day.

For once, I did not look at my phone every few minutes.

After she went to bed, I returned to the notes from the attorney's office.

I reviewed the list of unresolved entries and checked that I had not confused a missing document with a document that existed but lacked detail.

The difference mattered.

A missing invoice could mean the paperwork had not been supplied.

An incomplete invoice could mean the paperwork existed but did not provide enough information.

Neither fact, on its own, established why the record was incomplete.

I had to keep those distinctions clear.

The next morning, my attorney and I prepared a response.

We acknowledged the documents that had been supplied.

We identified the entries that still needed clarification.

We requested more detail where the available material did not establish the purpose of a payment.

We did not claim that every disputed expense was improper.

That made the response less dramatic.

It also made it harder to dismiss as an emotional accusation.

When Julian's attorney responded, he disputed some of our concerns and said additional explanations could be provided where appropriate.

There was no confession.

There was no clear resolution.

The process continued.

I felt disappointed, though I had known better than to expect a single stack of papers to answer everything.

My attorney reminded me that the court would assess the evidence as a whole.

We also discussed the effect the financial dispute might have on the custody case.

She warned me not to assume that questions about money automatically determined what arrangement would be best for Maya.

The two issues could affect each other, but they were not identical.

The court needed to consider her daily care, her stability, and her emotional welfare.

I understood that.

I also understood how easily I could become consumed by proving that Julian had misrepresented the finances.

I had to keep asking myself what I was trying to protect.

It was not my pride.

It was not the satisfaction of being right.

It was the ability to provide a stable home for Maya and to make decisions without being kept in the dark about our financial situation.

That evening, I placed the new records beside the earlier statements.

The folders were thicker than before.

The questions were more specific, but some remained unanswered.

I closed them and put them away.

Maya came into the kitchen holding her drawing.

“Can we put this on the fridge?”

“Of course.”

I found a magnet and fixed the picture to the door.

She stepped back to look at it.

“Now everybody can see it.”

I felt a small ache in my chest.

The courtroom video had made our private troubles visible to strangers.

Maya's drawing was different.

It was something she had chosen to share because she was proud of it.

I wanted her to keep that freedom.

I wanted her to know that not every private thing had to become evidence, and not every difficult truth had to be carried by a child.

I lifted her onto the kitchen chair so she could straighten the paper.

Then I helped her press the corners flat.

When she was satisfied, she took my hand and led me toward the living room.

The records could wait until morning.

The court would decide what they established.

I could not control that outcome.

But I could keep my own account honest, keep asking clear questions, and make sure Maya did not have to carry the answers for me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: My Husband Finally Had to Answer the Questions About His Money, but the Hardest
