So were the copies of the transfers I had spent weeks trying to understand.

I made coffee, but I barely drank it.

Maya was asleep in the next room, curled around her stuffed rabbit.

I stood in her doorway longer than I meant to.

After yesterday, I kept thinking about how small she had looked beside the child advocate.

Six years old.

Old enough to understand that something was wrong, but too young to know that none of it should have been her responsibility.

I went back to the kitchen and opened the folder.

The numbers had not changed overnight.

The transfers were still there. The unexplained payments were still there.

But now the judge had seen the video.

I did not know what it proved in a legal sense. I knew only what I had heard and seen.

Julian had discussed the payments as if he were afraid of someone discovering them.

That was enough to make the questions harder to ignore.

I had spent years reviewing accounts for people who insisted their books were clean.

Usually, the first mistake they made was assuming nobody would look closely.

Julian had made a different mistake.

He had assumed I would stop looking when he made it difficult for me to live.

I closed the folder when I heard Maya moving.

She appeared in the doorway wearing her pajamas, her hair flattened on one side.

“Are we going back to court today?”

I shook my head.

“Not today, sweetheart.”

“Will we have to go again?”

“Probably.”

She looked down at the rabbit in her hands.

“Will Daddy be there?”

“I think so.”

She nodded, but she did not look relieved.

I put the coffee aside and crouched beside her.

“You don't have to answer questions about the money. That's for the adults to handle.”

“What if they ask me about the video?”

“If someone asks you something, you can tell the truth. And if you don't understand a question, you can say that.”

She rubbed one of the rabbit's ears between her fingers.

“What if Daddy gets mad?”

I had no easy answer that would not be a promise I could not keep.

“I can't control how Daddy feels,” I said. “But you are not responsible for making him happy.”

Maya watched me closely, as if she were checking whether I believed my own words.

I hoped I did.

I made her toast and cut it into small squares, the way I had when she was younger.

She ate a few pieces and left the rest.

Before school, she stopped beside the front door.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Are you still going to tell the judge the truth?”

I felt the question settle in my chest.

“Yes,” I said. “Even when it's hard.”

She seemed to accept that.

Then she hugged me and ran to get her backpack.

After she left, I called my attorney.

I had been trying to manage the case with limited money, but the hearing had made one thing clear.

I needed someone who understood family court and could help me present the records properly.

I explained what had happened, including the video and the judge's questions about the transfers.

The attorney listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she asked me to bring every document I had.

“Don't sort the records according to what you think they mean,” she told me. “Bring the originals and the copies. We need to distinguish what they show from what you suspect.”

That was advice I should have given myself.

I had been so focused on finding the pattern that I sometimes forgot the importance of showing each step.

I spent the morning making a clean index.

Bank statements went first.

Then the transfer confirmations.

Then the invoices labeled as consulting expenses.

I included the dates and account references, but I did not write conclusions beside them.

If a payment was unexplained, I marked it unexplained.

If I could not identify the recipient, I said so.

It felt strange to leave unanswered questions on the page.

For years, I had been the person expected to find the answers.

Now I had to let the evidence speak at its own pace.

Around noon, I found a transfer I had marked twice.

The amount was not the largest. The date was not the most suspicious.

What caught my attention was the description attached to it.

The payment had been recorded as a consulting expense, but the supporting invoice did not explain what work had been performed.

There was no clear project description.

No detailed breakdown.

No record in the material I possessed showing what Julian's company had received in return.

I added it to the index.

I did not call it fraud.

I did not call it theft.

I wrote that the payment required an explanation.

That afternoon, my attorney reviewed the folder with me.

She asked about my former work as a forensic accountant.

I explained what I had done and what I had not done.

I had examined financial records, traced transfers, and helped identify discrepancies.

I had not conducted a complete audit of Julian's company.

I had no access to every account or every supporting document.

“So we don't claim that you know everything,” she said.

“No.”

“We show what you can establish, and we ask for the records you don't have.”

I nodded.

It was simple, but it changed the way I looked at the case.

I did not need to prove every hidden thing in one afternoon.

I needed to show why the court should examine the questions carefully.

Before I left, my attorney asked about Maya.

I told her what Maya had said about being afraid that Julian would get angry.

I also explained that I did not want my daughter questioned repeatedly about the recording.

“That's a reasonable concern,” she said. “We should make sure her welfare remains central.”

I walked out carrying the folder against my chest.

The afternoon was bright, but I barely noticed the weather.

For weeks, I had measured progress by whether I could find another missing payment.

Now I was beginning to understand that protecting Maya meant more than proving I had been right about the money.

It meant making sure she did not become the evidence everyone wanted to discuss.

That evening, she asked if she could sleep with the hallway light on.

I said yes.

She climbed into bed with her rabbit tucked beneath her chin.

I sat beside her until her breathing slowed.

“Mom?”

“I'm here.”

“Did I do something bad by showing the video?”

“No, Maya.”

“Even though Daddy didn't want people to see it?”

I brushed her hair away from her forehead.

“You were worried, and you asked for help. The adults have to decide what the video means.”

She looked at me for a long time.

Then she closed her eyes.

I stayed until I was sure she was asleep.

When I returned to the kitchen, the folder was waiting on the table.

For the first time in weeks, I did not open it again.

I turned off the light and went to bed.

The records would still be there in the morning.

My daughter needed me more than the numbers did.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: My Husband Said the Video Had Been Taken Out of Context, but the Judge Wanted Documents Instead of Another Argument

I woke before the alarm.
