Can you tell me when you found the phone?"

Maya looked at the advocate.

The advocate nodded gently.

"It was at home," Maya said. "Daddy left it there."

"Do you remember where?"

"On the table."

"Did you know what was on it?"

Maya shook her head.

"Not at first."

The judge asked whether Maya had watched the video before coming to court.

"Yes."

"Did anyone tell you to bring it here?"

"No."

"Did anyone ask you to hide it?"

Maya hesitated.

Then she nodded.

"Who asked you to hide it?"

"Daddy said not to show people his things."

Julian leaned forward.

"I meant his private things. Please allow your daughter to finish."

Julian sat back.

Maya stared at her rabbit.

I could see that she was frightened again.

The video had changed the room, but it hadn't changed the fact that she was a child sitting between two parents who were no longer able to protect her from their conflict.

I had to remind myself of that.

The recording might matter to the financial case.

It might matter to the judge's understanding of the situation.

But it did not erase Maya's fear.

I couldn't allow myself to become so focused on what the video proved that I forgot what it had cost her to bring it forward.

Judge Thorne asked the advocate to remain beside Maya.

Then she turned toward Julian.

"Mr. Vance, do you recognize the setting shown in the recording?"

Julian took a moment to answer.

"It appears to be my home."

"And do you recognize yourself in the video?"

He looked at the screen.

"Yes."

His lawyer stood again.

"Your Honor, I would ask that my client be permitted to review the full recording before making any further statements."

"That request is reasonable," the judge replied.

She looked toward the clerk.

"Make sure the original file is preserved. We will not draw final conclusions from a short recording without establishing its context."

I appreciated the caution.

I had built my career on the same principle.

A recording could show something important without answering every question.

It could reveal a conversation without proving what happened before or afterward.

It could raise serious concerns that still required investigation.

I knew that.

But I also knew what I had heard.

Julian had discussed the payments.

He had expressed concern that I might connect them.

That was no longer a suspicion based only on numbers.

It was something the court had now heard for itself.

Julian's lawyer asked for a brief recess.

Judge Thorne agreed.

People began moving in their seats.

The clerk collected the phone.

The child advocate leaned toward Maya and asked whether she needed a break.

Maya shook her head.

I stood slowly.

My legs felt unsteady.

I wanted to go to my daughter, but I didn't want to crowd her while she was trying to process what had happened.

She looked at me first.

I crossed the short distance between us.

"Are you all right?" I asked.

She nodded.

Then her face crumpled.

"I didn't want Daddy to be mad."

I knelt beside her chair.

"I know."

"Was I bad?"

"No."

I said it firmly enough that she looked up.

"You were not bad. You were trying to tell someone something that worried you."

She began to cry.

Quietly at first.

Then harder.

I wrapped my arms around her.

Her little hands gripped the back of my dress.

I held her while the courtroom emptied around us.

I didn't ask why she had waited.

I didn't ask why she had watched the recording alone.

I didn't ask what else she knew.

Those questions could wait.

For now, I wanted her to feel that she had not lost her mother by telling the truth.

After a while, she pulled away.

"Are you going to be angry with Daddy?"

I looked at her.

I could have said that I was angry.

It would have been true.

But I could see that she was trying to work out what would happen next.

"I'm upset about what happened," I told her. "But you are not responsible for what the adults do."

She wiped her face with her sleeve.

I took a tissue from the table and handed it to her.

She folded it into a small square.

Then she asked whether she could keep her rabbit beside her.

"Of course."

She placed it in her lap.

Across the room, Julian was speaking with his lawyer.

Evelyn stood beside them.

Chloe had moved several steps away, looking down at her phone.

I couldn't hear their conversation.

I didn't need to.

The easy certainty I had seen on Julian's face that morning was gone.

When Judge Thorne returned, everyone took their seats.

The hearing resumed.

But nothing felt the same.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: I Had Spent Weeks Trying to Prove the Money Was Missing, and Now My Daughter’s Recording Had Given the Judge a Reason to Ask Different Questions

The screen flickered.
