I'll explain when I get home."

That was all.

I stared at the message until my screen went dark.

When he came home, I asked him about the money.

He barely looked up from his phone.

"The company needed it temporarily."

"How much did you move?"

"Why are you interrogating me?"

"I'm asking about our account."

He put his phone on the counter.

"You've been worrying about money lately. I don't want you getting worked up over routine transactions."

I hated the way he said it.

Not because it was cruel in any obvious way.

Because it made my question sound like evidence against me.

I asked him to show me the records.

He told me he would.

He never did.

A few days later, my credit card was declined at the grocery store.

Maya was standing beside the cart, holding a box of cereal against her chest.

The cashier tried again.

The card still didn't work.

I felt people waiting behind me.

I paid with the cash in my wallet and took Maya outside.

She looked up at me.

"Did we run out of money?"

"No, sweetheart."

I said it too quickly.

She looked at the grocery bag.

"Then why didn't the card work?"

I told her the bank had probably made a mistake.

I was ashamed of how easily the lie came out.

I had not wanted her to worry.

But I also hadn't wanted to admit that I didn't know what my husband had done with our money.

That evening, I called the card company.

They confirmed that the account had been canceled.

The request had come through the account holder.

Julian had made it.

I sat at the kitchen table long after the call ended.

Maya had gone to bed.

The cereal she had chosen sat on the counter beside the groceries.

I kept looking at it.

It was an ordinary box of cereal.

It shouldn't have meant anything.

But I couldn't stop thinking about the question she had asked me outside the store.

Had we run out of money?

I had no answer that I trusted enough to give her.

The next morning, I began checking every financial record I could access.

I didn't tell Julian.

I didn't tell Evelyn.

I didn't tell anyone.

At first, I was looking for a simple explanation.

Perhaps the transfers were legitimate.

Perhaps the credit card cancellation was connected to a change in our financial arrangements.

Perhaps Julian was making decisions without discussing them because he thought it would save us both time.

I wanted those explanations to be true.

They would have been easier to live with.

But the records kept leading me in the same direction.

There were payments to consulting businesses I didn't recognize.

There were invoices for services that seemed strangely vague.

There were transfers that appeared to move money from one place to another without any clear reason.

Some amounts had been broken into smaller payments.

Others were labeled with descriptions that didn't match the documents attached to them.

I made a list.

Then I made another.

I compared dates.

I checked totals.

I wrote down the names of the companies and looked for connections in the records already available to me.

I did not assume that every unusual payment meant wrongdoing.

That would have been careless.

But the pattern was becoming difficult to ignore.

Julian had not simply moved money out of our joint account.

He appeared to have created a system that made it harder to see where some of the money was going.

I recognized the method.

I had seen similar arrangements during my years as a forensic accountant.

The details differed from case to case, but the purpose was often the same.

Make each transaction look small enough to explain.

Give the payment a harmless description.

Keep the records separate.

Rely on the assumption that nobody will take the time to put everything together.

Julian had forgotten one thing.

I knew how to put things together.

I also knew that knowing something and proving it were different.

So I kept working.

At the end of one afternoon, I found a payment that didn't match the explanation he had given me.

I wrote the amount on a sheet of paper.

Then I wrote the date beside it.

I checked the corresponding invoice.

The company listed on the invoice had supposedly provided consulting services.

There was no clear description of what those services were.

The amount was significant.

The supporting information was not.

I placed the page in a folder.

It was the first time I had allowed myself to think that Julian might be deliberately hiding money from me.

The thought made me feel sick.

I closed the folder and went to check on Maya.

She was sitting on her bedroom floor, lining up small plastic animals.

A rabbit sat at one end of the row.

I sat beside her.

"How was your day?"

"Good."

"What did you do?"

"We drew pictures."

She picked up a little plastic horse and moved it to the other side of the row.

Then she asked me whether Daddy was coming home for dinner.

I told her I didn't know.

She nodded as though she had expected that answer.

I wanted to ask whether she had been worried about anything.

I wanted to know what Julian said to her when I wasn't there.

But I was afraid of making her feel as if she had to report on her own father.

So I asked her what she wanted for dinner.

She chose pasta.

We ate together at the kitchen table.

I tried to make the evening ordinary.

I helped her with her bath.

I read her a story.

I tucked the rabbit beside her pillow.

Before I turned off the light, she caught my hand.

"Mom?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Are you and Daddy mad at each other because of me?"

The question hit me harder than anything I had found in the financial records.

"No."

I sat on the edge of her bed.

"This is not your fault. Not even a little."

She watched me carefully.

"Promise?"

"I promise."

She released my hand.

I stayed until she fell asleep.

Then I went back downstairs and opened the folder again.

I had spent the evening trying to convince my daughter that she was not responsible for the problems in our marriage.

But I was beginning to understand that someone else might be teaching her to believe otherwise.

The next morning, Evelyn called.

She asked whether Maya could spend the afternoon with her.

I hesitated.

There had been a time when I would have welcomed the offer without thinking twice.

Evelyn had always been involved in Maya's life.

She had bought her clothes, attended school events, and sent birthday cards with too much glitter.

But recently, her visits had begun to leave Maya quieter than before.

I had noticed the change.

I had not wanted to accuse a grandmother of doing anything wrong without understanding what was happening.

"Why don't you ask Maya what she'd like to do?" Evelyn said.

Her voice was gentle.

Almost too gentle.

I agreed to the visit.

That afternoon, Maya returned with a small paper bag containing a new coloring book.

She went straight to her room.

I found her sitting on the bed, turning the pages without coloring anything.

"Did you have a nice time with Grandma?"

"Yes."

"Did something happen?"

She shook her head.

I waited.

She kept looking at the book.

Then she asked, "Mommy, if someone says you're wrong, does that mean you are?"

I sat beside her.

"No, sweetheart. People can disagree and still be wrong themselves."

She looked up.

"What if they're sure?"

"Being sure doesn't always make someone right."

Maya seemed to think about that.

Then she closed the coloring book and placed it on the bed.

I wanted to ask what Evelyn had told her.

But Maya had already begun gathering her stuffed animals, and I couldn't bring myself to turn the conversation into an interrogation.

I told myself I would speak to Evelyn later.

I told myself I would find a way to understand what was happening.

I was still trying to be fair.

That was one of my worst habits.

I gave people room to explain themselves long after their behavior had begun to speak clearly.

A few days later, Julian came home while I was sorting papers at the dining table.

He noticed the folder beside me.

"What's that?"

"Financial records."

He stopped.

For the first time in weeks, his expression changed before he could hide it.

"Why are you going through those?"

"Because I don't understand some of the transactions."

"You don't need to understand every business decision."

"I understand enough to know that the records don't match what you told me."

He stared at me.

Then he laughed once, without humor.

"You've been home for years, and now you think you can audit my company?"

I felt the insult land.

I also felt something inside me become still.

"I didn't forget my profession, Julian."

He looked at the folder again.

"You should stop digging into things you don't understand."

I had heard him dismiss my concerns before.

This time, I noticed something different.

He wasn't simply annoyed that I had questioned him.

He seemed worried about what I might find.

I closed the folder.

"Then show me the records that explain the transfers."

He said nothing.

I waited.

He picked up his phone and walked away.

That night, I copied the information I had already gathered into a separate set of notes.

I kept the original records where they belonged.

I did not want to alter anything or create confusion about what I had found.

I wanted a clear record of the transactions and the questions they raised.

By the time I finished, I had a much better understanding of what Julian had been doing with the money.

I still couldn't prove every connection.

But I could see enough to know that the financial problems he had blamed on me were not what they appeared to be.

I had spent days wondering whether I was missing something.

Now I was beginning to wonder whether Julian had counted on me never looking.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: My Mother-in-Law Kept Telling My Daughter That Her Father Knew Best, Until I Realized My Silence Was Becoming Part of the Problem

The first time I realized Julian had taken control of our money, I thought there had been a mistake.
