15 – I Kept Practicing What I Would Say to My Son, but Every Version Began With the Same Fear That He Might Stop Needing Me

By the following morning, I had rehearsed the conversation so many times that I was tired before it began.

I tried it while brushing my teeth.

I tried it while making breakfast.

I even tried it while standing beside the kitchen sink, waiting for the water to heat.

Every version started differently.

Some began with a question.

Others began with an apology.

A few began with the words I had heard him say.

But every version carried the same fear underneath it.

What if I told Spencer the truth and he decided he no longer wanted me near him?

I knew how unreasonable that sounded.

He was my son.

I was his mother.

A difficult conversation should not erase a lifetime of being family.

But fear does not always listen to reason.

I had spent so many months proving my love by finding money that I did not know what my love would look like when I stopped doing that automatically.

I wanted to believe I could simply sit beside him and be his mother.

I wanted to believe he would understand.

Yet part of me was still measuring my worth by how much trouble I could take away from him.

That was the part I needed to face.

I had not won twenty million dollars because I was a better mother.

I had not become a better mother when I started selling my belongings.

And I would not become a worse one if I took time to ask questions.

I repeated that to myself while I put the dishes away.

Then I stopped and laughed at how strange it was to need permission from myself.

The house remained quiet.

My mother's sewing machine was no longer in it.

The space where I used to keep it seemed larger than it had any right to be.

I remembered the day I carried it to the pawnshop.

I had held the machine carefully, trying not to let the metal edge knock against the doorframe.

I had told myself that I could get it back later.

At the time, that had been enough to make the loss bearable.

I had not wanted to imagine a future in which I could not reclaim it.

Now I could see that I had been making that kind of promise to myself for months.

I would replace the jewelry later.

I would repay the loans later.

I would rest later.

I would worry about myself later.

There had always been a later, and it had always moved farther away.

I went to the kitchen table and opened the notebook.

The line I had written the day before was still there.

Find out what is true before deciding what to give.*

I underlined it once.

Then I added another sentence beneath it.

I can love him without answering every question with money.*

I stared at the words.

They did not make me feel strong.

They made me feel exposed.

I had never thought of myself as a person who needed to be needed.

I had simply believed that when someone you loved was in trouble, you helped.

But I could remember the relief that came when Spencer asked me for something and I found a way to provide it.

For a little while, I did not have to sit helplessly with his illness.

There was a bill to pay.

A prescription to cover.

A number to find.

I could do something.

Maybe that was why his words had cut so deeply.

He had said that I liked feeling indispensable.

I wanted to reject the idea completely.

But I could not deny that helping him had sometimes been the only part of the situation I knew how to control.

I could not control how he felt.

I could not control what the doctors might tell him.

I could not control the future.

I could control whether a bill was paid.

I could control whether I answered the phone.

I could control how much I gave, even when I had spent years telling myself that I could not.

I folded the notebook shut.

I did not need to solve every part of my relationship with Spencer before I saw him again.

I needed to stop pretending that money could answer questions it had never been meant to answer.

Later that day, he called.

I was sitting at the table, sorting the papers into a cleaner stack.

“Hi, Mom.”

“Hi.”

“Are you coming in today?”

I looked toward the window.

The light had shifted across the kitchen floor.

“I can come tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?”

“Yes.”

“Why not today?”

I could hear the impatience in his voice.

It might have been the frustration of being in a hospital room.

It might have been his worry about the bills.

It might have been something else.

I did not know.

“I need to finish a few things here,” I said.

“Are you avoiding me?”

The question landed harder than I expected.

“No.”

“Because it feels like you're avoiding me.”

I put my hand flat on the table.

“I know things have felt different lately.”

“They have.”

“I don't want to pretend otherwise.”

He said nothing.

I waited.

Then he asked, “Did something happen?”

For one second, I nearly told him everything.

I imagined saying his name and asking him to remember the conversation he had had on speakerphone.

I imagined his face changing.

I imagined him telling me I had misunderstood.

I imagined him admitting that I had heard exactly what I thought I had heard.

But I could not know which answer would come.

And I was tired of preparing for every possible response before I had even asked the question.

“Something has been on my mind,” I said.

“What?”

“I want us to talk about it when I see you.”

“Is it about the money?”

“It's about more than that.”

He breathed out.

“Mom, I don't know what's going on with you.”

“I know.”

“I'm trying to deal with enough already.”

“I understand that.”

“Then why can't you just tell me?”

I looked at the folded ticket envelope in the drawer.

Because I was afraid, I thought.

Because I did not know whether I could bear hearing the truth.

Because I still wanted to believe the words I had heard were not the whole story.

But I did not say any of that.

“I want to talk to you properly,” I told him.

There was another silence.

“Fine,” he said.

The word was short and flat.

I felt the urge to take back what I had said.

I wanted to tell him I would come that afternoon.

I wanted to reassure him that the money was not a problem.

I wanted to make the tension disappear.

Instead, I stayed where I was.

“I love you,” I said.

“I love you too.”

We ended the call.

I remained at the table for several minutes.

I could not tell whether I had handled the conversation well.

I only knew I had not made a promise out of fear.

That was different from the way I had handled things before.

I put the notebook in my handbag.

Then I placed the bills in their folder and returned the ticket to the drawer.

Tomorrow, I would go to the hospital.

I would sit beside my son.

I would ask him the question I had been carrying since the morning I discovered the winning numbers.

I could not guarantee that the answer would make me feel better.

But I could no longer keep choosing silence simply because the truth might hurt.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: On the Way Back to Room 12, I
