14 – When I Looked at the Bills Again, I Realized I Had Been Treating Every Question About Money as Though It Were an Emergency

That afternoon, I spread the bills across the kitchen table.

I had already sorted them once, but I wanted to look at them again with a clearer head.

There were hospital statements, pharmacy receipts, loan notices, and envelopes I had opened so quickly that I had barely read the words inside.

I lined them up by date.

Then I took a notebook from the drawer and began writing down the amounts.

The numbers did not change.

What changed was the way I looked at them.

Before, every balance had felt like a warning.

Every due date had seemed to be counting down to something terrible.

I had imagined that if I did not pay quickly enough, I would somehow be failing Spencer.

I had not always stopped to ask what was actually required, what could wait, or what needed clarification.

I had simply tried to make the fear go away.

I could see that more clearly now.

I was not ashamed of helping my son.

I was ashamed of how little room I had left for myself.

I had sold the jewelry I had kept for years.

I had taken my mother's sewing machine to the pawnshop.

I had borrowed money I could not easily repay.

I had told myself each sacrifice was temporary.

There would be a point when Spencer was better, the bills were manageable, and I could start putting my life back together.

But I had never defined what that point would look like.

There had always been another expense.

Another worry.

Another reason to believe I could not stop.

I wrote down the amount of one loan and stared at it.

Then I wrote down another.

The lottery ticket could change those numbers.

It could pay the debts.

It could give me a place to start again.

But it could not tell me whether the money Spencer had asked for had always been needed in the way I believed.

That was a different question.

I set the pen down.

I did not want to become a woman who saw betrayal in every request.

I did not want to examine every memory and decide that none of it had been real.

Spencer had been sick.

He had spent time in the hospital.

I had seen him there.

I had heard his voice when he was tired.

I had watched him answer questions about how he felt.

I was not going to pretend those things had never happened simply because I had heard one conversation that frightened me.

But neither could I keep pretending that the conversation meant nothing.

I picked up one of the hospital statements.

The paper was creased where I had folded it into my purse.

I smoothed it with my palm.

The amount printed near the bottom had once been enough to make my stomach tighten.

Now I could look at it without immediately reaching for my phone.

I could ask questions.

I could request clarification.

I could understand what I was being asked to pay before deciding how to pay it.

That seemed like such a small thing.

I wondered why it had taken me so long.

Perhaps I had believed that a good mother should never hesitate when her child needed help.

Perhaps I had confused hesitation with selfishness.

Or perhaps I had simply been too tired to consider another way.

I gathered the papers and placed them in the folder.

Then I took the winning ticket from the drawer.

I checked the numbers one more time.

I did not feel the excitement I had felt in the hospital corridor.

That first morning, I had imagined walking into Spencer's room and telling him that everything was going to be all right.

I had imagined his relief.

I had imagined the weight leaving both our shoulders.

Now I understood that I had been preparing to make a promise before I knew what the promise would require.

I had wanted the money to solve the conversation before the conversation ever happened.

I put the ticket back in its envelope.

There was still time to decide how to handle it.

There was no need to tell Spencer that very afternoon.

There was no need to pretend I had reached a final decision about how much I would give him.

The money was mine to manage carefully.

That did not mean I had to keep it all.

It meant I had to stop making decisions simply because I was afraid of what might happen if I did not.

My phone rang while I was putting the folder away.

Spencer's name appeared on the screen.

I answered.

“Hi, sweetheart.”

“Hi, Mom.
