12 – I Finally Admitted That the Lottery Had Not Changed My Son or Our Relationship, Only Given Me the Freedom to Stop Making Decisions Out of Desperation

That evening, I sat at the kitchen table long after dinner.

The dishes were clean.

The counters were clear.

The bills were stacked in a neat pile beside the envelope.

I had done everything I could to make the room feel settled.

My thoughts were another matter.

I kept returning to the morning I had discovered the winning numbers.

I remembered sitting in this same chair.

I remembered checking the ticket again and again.

I remembered the first rush of disbelief.

Then I remembered what I had planned to do.

I had wanted to take the money straight to Spencer in the form of a promise.

I had wanted to tell him that the struggle was over.

I had imagined that the money would make him feel safe and make me feel useful.

I had believed that if I could remove the financial pressure, the rest of our problems would become easier.

That belief had been comforting.

It had also been too simple.

Money could remove some pressures.

It could not decide what kind of people we would be to each other.

I looked at the envelope.

For the first time, I allowed myself to think about keeping a meaningful portion of the money for my own future.

The idea made me feel guilty.

I imagined Spencer asking why I hadn't given him more.

I imagined telling him that I needed to protect my own security.

I imagined the disappointment I might see on his face.

Then I asked myself why I was imagining a conversation that hadn't happened.

I didn't know what Spencer would say.

I didn't know what he expected.

I only knew what I had heard him say to the woman on the telephone.

If he had truly been relying on my fear to obtain money, then giving him everything would not necessarily make our relationship healthier.

It might simply make the next request larger.

I didn't want to assume that was what would happen.

But I couldn't ignore the possibility.

I opened the envelope and took out the ticket.

The paper was beginning to feel familiar in my hands.

I had checked it so often that the numbers seemed almost ordinary.

I looked at them one more time.

Then I placed the ticket on the table and rested my hands beside it.

Twenty million dollars.

I had never expected to possess that kind of money.

I had spent most of my life making careful decisions about ordinary expenses.

I knew how to stretch a grocery budget.

I knew how to put aside a little money when I could.

I knew how to delay buying something until I could afford it.

I did not know how to suddenly become wealthy.

And I did not want the shock of winning to make me careless.

The first thing I needed was a clear understanding of my own finances.

I needed to know what I owed.

I needed to know what I wanted to protect.

I needed to decide what level of support I could offer Spencer without making promises that would leave me frightened again.

I could do those things.

They were practical decisions.

The harder part was emotional.

I needed to accept that my son might not respond to the money the way I had imagined.

I had pictured gratitude.

I had pictured relief.

I had pictured him looking at me as though I had given him a second chance at life.

Those images had been so vivid that I had never considered how much I was asking them to mean.

I wanted the money to prove that I had done enough.

I wanted it to erase the helplessness I had felt while watching his problems grow.

I wanted it to restore the feeling that I could protect him from anything.

But no amount of money could guarantee those things.

I had to stop expecting it to.

I folded the ticket and placed it back in the envelope.

Then I picked up my telephone.

Spencer's name appeared on the screen.

I considered calling him.

I wanted to tell him that I loved him.

I wanted to ask how he was feeling.

I wanted to tell him that I was still working on the bills and that I had not abandoned him.

But I also wanted to speak to him about the conversation I had overheard.

I wanted him to understand that his words had changed something between us.

I wasn't sure whether I could say all of that in one conversation without letting my hurt do the talking.

So I didn't call that evening.

Instead, I wrote down what I wanted him to understand.

I wrote that I loved him.

I wrote that I wanted him to recover.

I wrote that I was willing to help him, but I could not continue making decisions out of panic.

Then I stopped.

I had not written the most important sentence.

I sat with the pen in my hand.

Finally, I wrote that I needed honesty.

I stared at the word.

Honesty.

It looked simple on the page.

It felt enormous in my life.

I had trusted Spencer because he was my son.

I had believed that the love between us meant we could speak openly, even when things were difficult.

Now I had to consider whether that trust had become so automatic that I had stopped paying attention to what he was actually saying.

I didn't want to become suspicious of everything.

I didn't want to watch him constantly, searching for proof that he had lied.

I wanted a relationship in which I could believe his words because they were honest, not because I was afraid to question them.

That was what I wanted.

I couldn't make him give it to me.

But I could stop pretending it wasn't necessary.

I placed the paper beside the bills.

Then I took the envelope and returned it to the drawer.

I closed the drawer gently.

For the first time since winning, I didn't feel compelled to check the ticket again.

I knew it was there.

I knew what it meant financially.

And I knew what it did not mean.

It did not mean I had to give Spencer every dollar.

It did not mean I had to solve every problem before he asked.

It did not mean I had to ignore the pain I felt when I heard him speak about me.

The ticket gave me choices.

I was allowed to use them.

I stood and turned off the kitchen light.

As I walked toward the bedroom, I thought about the next time I would visit Spencer.

I didn't know exactly what I would say.

I didn't know how he would respond.

I only knew I couldn't continue behaving as though the conversation outside room twelve had never happened.

I had heard him.

I had understood him.

And whatever the truth turned out to be, I needed to face it.

I went to bed and set my telephone beside the lamp.

I didn't wait for it to ring.

I didn't prepare another financial promise.

I simply lay there and allowed myself to feel the sadness I had been pushing aside.

I was sad because I had wanted to believe that money would make everything right.

I was sad because I had begun to doubt something I had always considered certain.

And I was sad because loving my son had become more complicated than I had ever imagined.

But beneath the sadness, there was something else.

A small sense of control.

I could no longer control every problem Spencer faced.

I could no longer assume that giving him more would bring us closer.

I could not change what I had heard.

But I could decide what happened next.

For months, I had been living as though I had no choice.

Now, for the first time, I understood that I did.

The lottery had not changed my son.

It had not repaired our relationship.

It had not answered the questions waiting between us.

It had simply given me the freedom to stop making every decision out of desperation.

And I was finally beginning to understand what that freedom was worth.
